Does Drake’s “Hotline Bling” Sound Familiar To D.R.A.M.’s “Cha Cha”?

Written by Nigel D. / 10.20.15

The same day Drake dropped the video for “Hotline Bling” D.R.A.M. had a performance in Toronto and was inspired to speak out about the similarities between his song and Drake’s. D.R.A.M. feels he was jacked, I had made tweets about the songs weeks ago. People mention they have different samples, but to me it seems like “Hotline Bling” was inspired by “Cha Cha” and dropped right after it peaked. What do you think?

Fader just released part of an interview where Drake speaks on the similarities.

“You know, like in Jamaica, you’ll have a riddim and it’s like, everyone has to do a song on that,” Drake said. “Imagine that in rap, or imagine that in R&B. Imagine if we got one beat and every single person—me, this guy, this guy, all these guys—had to do a song on that one beat. So sometimes I’ll pick a beat that’s a bit, like, sunnier, I guess is the word you used, than usual, and I just try my hand at it. And that’s kind of what ‘Hotline Bling’ was. And I loved it. It’s cool. I’ve been excited by that sort of creative process.”

Drake Speaks On Being Signed Up For Greatness With W Magazine

Written by Nigel D. / 10.15.15

W: When you wrote, “I signed up for greatness,” what exactly did you mean?

Drake: Realizing that I had a larger purpose was one of the most comforting, peaceful feelings. With music, especially, I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m a vessel to deliver emotion to people. I want to provide the background music to your life as you live it. I’m there for you in heartbreak and tragedy and joy. The thought of being remembered is what keeps me going. What I was trying to say is, the negatives don’t matter—it’s history that counts. At 19, I was just really, really excited to be in the room. Everything was romantic then. Now, nearly a decade later, it’s a bit different. I have to speak against negativity and conflict. There’s so much bulls**t that you’re forced to address, but it’s okay. I’m afraid I sound boosie.
