Change Has Come, Now History is Ours: Jay-Z, Obama, and the Hip-Hop Community’s Next Movement

Editorial By Michael Partis

What is Hov talking about on his new track “History” ?  Is it about more than “History” and “Victory?”

There is always the tendency to feel as if we are thinking too much; that we are taking it too far.  It becomes a feeling we have when looking at all forms of art: music, paintings, poetry, dance, etc.

But the great artist is the one that legitimates our search for something more.  They make you see further, think longer, listen closer—they make you believe there is meaning to their work; beyond the surface; beyond the first encounter; beyond the first layer.

Read Between The Lines: Swagga Like Puff Throwing Jabs @ Jay-Z

I noticed some interesting lines in Diddy’s, “Swagga Like Puff,” that can be interpreted as a jab. Hip Hop is full of egos and subliminal lines, so are these lines just coincidental or a light jab to Jay-Z?

"I Put Fab Back On The Charts" - Jay-Z

I was talking to a Jay-Z/Fabolous fan about that line on the, “Put On Remix,” and they had a disgruntled look on their face. I guess Jay-Z can take credit for getting Fabolous on Def Jam, but should he also get credit for his album going gold? “From Somethin to Nothin,” first came out with, “Diamonds,” which didn’t do very good and then was followed by a street single, “Return of the Hustle.” But what got Fab on the charts was, “You Make Me Better,” which was the number one Rap song on Billboard for 14 weeks straight(some can argue Ne-Yo is Jay-Z’s boy), followed by the success of, “Baby Don’t Go.” Of course Jigga was on the Brooklyn track, but did that help sales? Well state your opinion on the line…

Read Between The Lines: Lil Wayne - I Feel Like Dying

I am sittin on the clouds
I got smoke coming from my seats
I can play basketball with the moon
I got the whole world at my feet
Playin’ touch football on Marijuana Street
Or in a marijuana field, you are so beneath my cleats
Get high, so high that I feel like lying
Down in a cigar, roll me up & smoke me cuz

Swimming laps around a bottle of Louie The 13th
Jumping off of a mountain into a sea of Codine
I’m at the top of the top but still I climb
[ Dying lyrics found on http://www.completealbumlyrics.com ]
And if I shall ever fall the ground will then turn to wine
Pop, Pop, I feel like flying, then I feel like frying, then
(I feel like dying)

I can mingle with the stars & throw a party on Mars
I am a prisoner locked up behind Xanax bars
I have just boarded a plane without a pilot
And violets are blue, roses are red
Daisies are yellow, the flowers are dead
Wish I can give you this feeling
I feel like buying
And if my dealer don’t have no more, then
(I feel like dying)

Is this abstract rap, or a piece of crap? Some people say the lyrics are mad deep and they listen to it when they are high. Others have said Lil Wayne is just bugging out on this track. What thoughts do you have on this track?

Read Between The Lines: I Respect the Shooter- Jay-Z

I’m from the era where niggaz don’t snitch
You from the era where snitchin’ is the shit
I’m afraid of the future (why?)
Y’all respect the one who got shot,
I respect the shooter

I don’t know, ever since I heard this line it rubbed me the wrong way. I made a little comment about in the VA post but decided to edit it out. I’m not stupid, I know what Jay-Z is saying but I don’t like the message. If it was meant to diss 50/Camron or not, I can’t cosign saying you respect the shooters. To me shooters shouldn’t be respected. Why respect someone that takes deadly force on someone usually unarmed. There is no honor in settling a dispute with gun play. Jay-Z needs to realize a lot of kids out there listen to his words, and will take things out of context. What opinions do you guys have?

Also this is a new thing I will be doing, if you guys got lyrics that stand out to you, email them to me and I might post it up.
