What are your thoughts on the current state of New York Hip Hop?
If NY Hip Hop fell off, what would you say is the reason?

I was listening to this. My only thought is that we need to stop being those people who talk about “the good old days”. Those days came from breaking new acts from our city and supporti g them.
Instead of reminiscing about a bygone era, put Action Bronson songs on at 7:30 and Joey Badass songs on at 6. If the system doesn’t allow for the breaking of new acts, CHANGE the system. We’re never gonna get 93, 98, 01, or 03 back. Make new moments now.
yea but i dont think i wanna hear action bronson at 7:30 am, and i like joey badass but i dont wanna hear that so early in the morning either. plus parents might be driving kids to school etc etc. that music is a lil harsh for kids ears. but whatever they play now might have sexual subject matter and that is also not suitable for kids in the am.
All he can speak on is the state of NY Hip Hop radio, not the state of NY Hip Hop.
Sounds to be like a division is about to be made. Ny hip hop heads think only eastcoast hip hop is good enough…thats the first thing wrong with all of this. Why can other regions like NY hip hop but NY heads cant like other stuff? I love 90′s eastcoast hiphop but but its not anybody’s fault that u guys’ music is not selling so stop tryin create beef and division.
it’s a certain type of standard NY hold rappers too. it’s a golden era thing. but I will say, NY didnt even play dope records from ANYONE outside of NY until the late 90′s.
ny doesnt have to run hiphop, the world evovles and hiphop marketting has evolved also. ppl want things to go back to the 90′s, do u want a big ass beeper on your hip also? that old shit was the way it was cuz ny had a strangle hold on the scene. same way hollywood has its grip on film and tv. yea shows film elsewhere but majority is california. now that companies and technology has evolved ny cant just dominate it. its not bad, its just different. every region has great music, and every region has crappy bullshit even ny. i’m from brooklyn its plenty of local dudes i dont wanna hear not now not ever
Laziness. NY Rappers are lazy and/or don’t make the records that’ll get them noticed and if they do, they soon fall off or just disappear. It’s the rapper’s fault and the fans, if the fans don’t keep asking for that rapper’s music to be played then no one will listen.
Oh and great music will always get recognized, so it starts with the rapper.
The real problem is NY wants the old days back. Back in the day if someone dissed NY the whole city would clap back and the labels would blackball that rapper who dissed the city. If you wanted a big record deal you’d have to go through New York and pay the toll. Things have changed and NY refuses to adapt to those changes. Rappers from the west and south showed you can get it popping without a New York cosign. And nowadays with the internet you can get your music out to the people without any hurdles. Add that with NY and you have the loss of the crown. New York needs to adapt, re-create the identity of New York hip-hop, and understand that hip-hop belongs to everybody and not just New York. The old days and old ways are never coming back.
IT’S 50′S FAULT. THE BEEFS WITH ANYBODY WHO DID SONGS WITH JA RULE. THE HE BEEFED WITH CAM AND THEN JUELZ AND JIM JONES WENT ON TOUR WITH 50 IN 50′S ATTEMPT TO SPLIT THEM UP. THEN CAM PUT A HOLD ON ALL JUELZ MUSIC. ALL THEM SONGS THAT MADE LIL WAYNE HOT, JUELZ HAD VERSES ON BUT CAM VETOED THEM CUZ JUELZ WAS DISLOYAL BY GOING ON TOUR WITH 50 WHILE THEY WERE BEEFING. ROCAFELA BREAKS UP. 50 BAITS BEANS TO GO AFTER HOV. AND MUCH MORE. 60 IS RESPONSIBLE 4 MOST OF THIS.
.Now it’s a conspiracy against your boy…I posted two comments on this muthfucka Let’s see if this comment posts.
^What do you fucking know!! Original comment:
Fat Joe said it best…As long as it comes natural, then that Preemo(the irony of where he’s from) boom-bap doesn’t have to be the mandate.
T.D.E. is running L.A.(and some can say hiphop) but who were the main 3 influenced by?(and don’t dare say Kendrick is Pac because their lyrical techniques aren’t similar) Ab-Soul, ScHoolboy Q: Who influenced them to rap? The fact is, L.A. didn’t break them either; it’s like you two mirror each other.
LA didn’t focus on their “sound” they just started to show more love to the city when TDE started popping(who, once again, went to NY to get known). Support NY artists, regardless of their influences, and more stations will feel comfortable to play regional music.

Get money and stay grinding–fuck these hoes!!
(won’t have a probably posting this ignant shit, I bet.)
I feel you. They don’t be posting my shit either. Nicca say sumn with some meaning, may not see it. But if a nicca posted, “Ain’t worried bout nuthin, haaaan”, that shit would show up. SMH
@PAIN You Explained It The Best Bro!
NY just need to play fab & asap ferg & asap rocky & french Montana anything a hot NY rapper is dropping play that shit and break new upcoming NY rappers
ha ha. I was in NY most of the summer. I did not hear Fab not ONE TIME.
FUCK NY AND EVERYONE IN IT WHOLE STATE IS A BUNCH OF HATING ASS WELFARE BABIES
new york doesn’t own hip hop. and rappers dont own new york, so stop hating on ppl that diss new york. its just a city that most of yall would be getting racially profiled in. New york rappers have bars for days but are not creative at all.
Completely agree with (Man). NY needs to recreate their identity. They Like stuck in an identity crisis. Playing music from the south etc. Nothing against the South but all the great Minds in Hip Hop came from NY period. I called it ‘Racing Minds’ The City that never Sleeps. WTF happen? I don’t know man… but NY hit fell back hard. Back in the days I couldn’t wait to here the next Jay, Nas, common man. Talib, Mos Def,, NAs, Jay, LL Do I need to say more? Those are for sure in the discussions of the greatest hip hop minds off all time.. These niggas letting south niggas piss on them. Where is your pride? Your History? Your Culture? I blame it on the old niggas not giving back to the youth..
Yeah because the south didn’t give hip-hop Outkast, Scarface, Ludacris, Chamillionaire, T.I., Rick Ross, B.o.B., Big K.R.I.T., Lil Wayne and etc. Miss me with that the south can’t rap and NY run hip-hop shit because NY, like every other region, always had trash artists that combated the good artist. It’s just evident now because niggas are putting on their friends who they know can’t rap for shit instead of putting on niggas with skills.
Co-sign @James Little. Delivery may be different, but no less real, no less relevant
east coast rappers got bars for days but it takes a hard hook to make a hit. Nobodys tryna hear punchlines in the club. i.e slaughterhouse, cassidy, the list could go on forever. They can all spit but have trouble coming up with mainstream hit music. Which is why they never get the credit they deserve. The reason 50 couldn’t bury ross is bcuz ross kept coming with radio heat, unlike ja. Artists like k. Dot and jay z last long bcuz they come up with raw hooks and got bars for days. Complete package.
True. This is the music BUSINESS. Gotta make what wanna buy/listen to. I think Kay Slay said it the best in the Maino interview. Most folks cant bump battle rap while driving. Clever wordplay is great but the overly tough guy persona is not gonna folks unwind and kick back in the club/home/party.
If 50 (The General) is to blame for destroying NY Hip Hop like u clowns like to say, then hes the only one who can bring it back
Ebro and Rosenberg both need to put a pistol in there mouths !!! So shake it like a red nose is great music ? Trinidad James is great music ? But you spinning it ! And great music. Out there that never see’s the light of day ! But spinning two chains all fuckin day ????if yal were so right about the music yal play why yal ratings in the crapper ??? Satelitte radio blows fm out the water !!!
so u must not listen to rosenberg sunday night show then. he plays no mainstream hits, only underground, unsigned or just started rappers, or the action bronsons or whoever. he breaks those ny artist, he is THE ONLY dude on mainstream radio in NY that plays that type of shit. check his website if u can log on here to hate on him, go on his site or listen to his sunday night show if u care bout truth or your statements havin creditbility and the mornin show is 2nd to breakfast club, but the station rated higher than power1051 overall. all 105 got is the morning show thats it
*waits for Astro to pop*
I HAVE ONE WORD FOR THE DEMISE OF NYC MUSIC AND RADIO…
Im from New York and Ebro sorta has a point, niggas aint fucking with each other let alone a outta town nigga. then some of these comments are true too, NY hip hop heads make shit into divisions they gotta respect the now and the good quality like niggas dont wanna hear Joey Badass in the club but its cool to give homie a spin somepoint or niggas like AB niggas wont pop in the club but a spin or two would be nice. Radio is for the south actually ima take that back radio is for niggas that make music with the intent to have they shit bumping in the club…….plain and simple New York has to let go and produceniggas that wanna pop on the radio and NONE seem to want to.
You also to realize that yes hip hop originated in NY. But blues, which eventually fueled rhythum and blues, soul music, funk, came from the south. NY can’t OWN our music. What would hip hop be without these genres? NY is still the center. But NY rappers gonna have to get about their hustle if they wanna “pop”. At the end of the day it’s entertainment. Folks gotta be entertained.
Now should the lane for lyrical warfare be opened, I wholeheartedly agree. We DEFINITELY need more balance.
BALANCED died in rap once investors took over the game. now, it’s all about business.
Nigel, Can you post the rest of that segment of the show?
Hold up!!!! yall still listen to the Radio??? who wants to hear the same song over, and over, and over Again… Radio sux, i haven’t listened to the morning show since Star left Power 105.1.. Ebro is a program director, why is he even on the morning show, Hot 97 should take a look at the role they play in all this. I listen to sports radio when the ipod ain’t on, fuck Hot 97 and Power they don’t play shit
Radio stations have to take blame as do the lazy artists put out bs or even going missing you’re Cam’ron’s,Julez Santana,Lazy Lloyd Banks they all took a long Hiatus.Ebro was more concerned with making sure bum niggas like French Montana and Trindad James got there Summer Jam moment so thats why ppl can say fuck NY and not feel anyway about it, You dare disrespect Chicago or Detroit and you will have problems but who is representing NY ? not Fabolous with his chick music nigga couldn’t even find a studio, not ASAP faggots wearing dresses and makeup so who’s gonna stand up for NY ? is anybody ? how can he blame 50 Cent and Dispet did he forget the two biggest legends going to war in 2001 for the crown of King of NY ?
Oh and great music will always get recognize ? do you really believe that and more importantly do the radio’s and DJ’s play this great Music ?
I dont agree that the breakups of Dipset and Rocafella are that significant in the grand scheme of things when talking about the downfall of NY hip hop. Hot acts come and go. Its always been like that. The acts that were hot in the first Golden Era (late 80′s) were all but gone for the second Golden Era (mid 90′s). But I will say that I think the break-up of the Fugees may have had a significant impact.
I also don’t think that 50 beefing with everybody is significant. So what? He says something to you, you say something back. Isnt that kinda what everybody got so excited about with Kendrick Lamar? All these rappers don’t have to be friends.
I believe the #1 reason for the downfall of NY hip hop is the lack of TALENT and ORIGINALITY. Too many NY rappers to come out over the last 15 years or so wanna b baby Biggies or Jay-Z juniors. Everybody wants to pop champagne, drive Bentleys, make it rain, etc.
Another reason is just the emergence of other regions. As hip hop grew, the rest of the country caught on. In the Golden Era of the late 80′s, those NY rap acts weren’t competing with rappers from Chicago, Atlanta, Louisana or Florida. So that made NY seem even more dominant.
Why are Ebro and Rosenberg even talking about NY Rap…They are not Hip Hop representatives…They do no represent hip hop in no way shape or form…They don’t even rep NY…Did they used to rap? Were in a group? Get them off the radio ASAP!!
Reading this shit half of you people sound really crazy NY is dead all around people barely even go there to shop now..get over it
ANSWER ME THIS, WHY IS STATE PROPERTY ON THE COVER OF THIS VIDEO? THEY FROM PHILLY. AND NY RAP AINT DEAD, ITS JUST KINDA RARE TO FIND ARTISTS WORTH LISTENING TOO BC EVERYBODY KINDA SOUNDING THE SAME.
was just bout to say that bout state property smh
So no one feels like the labels and artists that pay DJs money to have their songs spun have anything to do with this? That’s all I see
Rap/Hip Hop is goofy! Commercial and gimmicks has stolen the way of the culture. Sucker DJ’s in New York need not to be the representative/spokesman for the culture in NY. It’s sad that they don’t want to share in the blame of the Down fall of NY hip hop.
Keep feeding the listener with bullshit and then act like the women and the culture of NY aren’t programmed to the nonsense. GTFOH!!!!! Hot 97 and all other DJ’s, country wide don’t act like you ain’t part of this fuckery going on in music.
Look I’m gonna keep it funky I’m in orlando right now and they get mad when u tell them to play a east coast record the south don’t play new york records Period so i think all the program directors from every station in new york need to join in at a meeting together and say phuck it we not gonna play down south music anymore cause trust me the south is not playing east coast stuff its just real talk.AND ALL EBRO DID WAS COPY AND PASTE THE WHOLE KAY SLAY MAINO INTERVIEW TO MAKE EXCUSES FOR HIS ARAB OR JEWISH POLITICAL BOSSES AT THE STATION STOP IT 5!!!!
true. but you forgot that all these radio stations are owned by ClearChannel or RadioOne.
you right, I live in Orlando too. Nas had the 1# album in the country last year. I never heard him on the radio. shoot, I barely even hear Jay Z.
fuck that pucture.where NAS [THE REAL KING OF NEW YORK] at …
We speak about the “state of NY hip hop” all the time. We cover it constantly. What anyone talks about is merely the tip of the iceberg. There are 8 million opinions about it, and 8 million angles, 8 million stories, and many, many facts that are never part of any conversation. The issue is incredibly complex. It can’t be explained in one video. It can’t be debated on one blog post. And EBro, despite his occupation, is one of the the least qualified to speak on the subject because he is beholden and biased to probably several agendas.
First and foremost the times have changed drastically. The sound, the fashion, and the culture has by far exceeded expectations but with that said there have been ups and downs. For one we absorb so much more content on a daily basis with blogs, youtube, datpiff etc, that it does become overkill. While it is true that Hip Hop was created in NY you have to respect the South for putting their own take on things. They didn’t invent the wheel but their stories are just as valid as a Nas, Big or Jigga. How many east coast songs have you heard where the rapper is using Southern or West Coast slang to express themselves? I’ll wait. As for radio there will always be one-hit wonders. They were there in the 80′s, they were there in the 90′s too but the process of evolution will truly show who will survive. With NY artists I feel adapting shouldn’t be looked at as wack instead they should devote time to crafting songs. Songwriting, the ability to write hooks, bridges and even playing with cadences is what appeals to this generation. The ability to make something sound easy for the radio is done through trial and error. Often the biggest hits were mistakes that resonated with the audience. You can still cater to the clubs and drop gems but if you’re going over the audiences head or not relating to everyday joe then if course you’re not going to get anywhere. Don’t blame Radio for anything. They make money off of advertising. They don’t break artists they follow what we tell them. We as the people have more power than we are given credit for. Before Kendrick was blowing up the radio the streets were listening. Before A$AP was killing it once again the streets were tuned in. The evolution of change has happened and these program directors have no choice but to play it. They make commerce of what’s hot but we as the people dictate what’s hot. Recognize!
correct. eventually, if the street buzz is big enough, the radio will be forced to play it. think in the early 2000′s, they were playing 50′s mixtape tracks on the radio in NY.
a lof of great points above. in short, NY needs a new sound and new young superstars to bring the game back. they need to be well established in the streets AND have the ability to make club/radio music without being overly commercial. over the past 5 or so years, think of the rappers that guys like jay z and nas have endorsed: T.I, jcole, wayne, drake, jeezy, ross and kendrick lamar. NY would be in good standing if Fab, Juelz, and Banks had successfully kept their momentum.
True. At the of the day, niccas gotta be on their hustle. Look at the grind of the people you’ve named. Each one of those dudes been hustling nonstop since we’ve first seen them.
I will say I think the beef shit got in the way too. For the most part niccas in the south is bout they bidness. Fuck beef. Perfect your craft and take care of your business. Shows, mixtapes, collabs, blogs, vlogs, “a day in the life” videos.
And let it be known, niccas in the south fucks with NY hellas and we pay homage. Real niccas respect real niccas. And Fat Joe wasn’t the first NY nicca to fuck with the South. Jay-Z jumped on the Juvenile “Ha” remix. NY rappers, come fuck with the south. Come do some shows down here. We come up there….You guys come down here. Jay-Z and Kanye, neither of which are from the south, opened up the WTT tour in Atlanta and had to add a second show I was there. Crowd was hype. Knew all the songs. Kanye even said at one point in the show, “See Jay, I told you. I love these ATL niccas!!”.
Idk Why he named The Roc majority of the team was from Philly not Ny lol Beans & State Property was the Roc….
Hate it or Love it…the south has always been and will always be a CULTURAL center of the African American community. Most of them NY, Chi-Town, LA, niccas got southern roots…for the obvious reasons. And honestly aint nothing that new about hip-hop it is next evolution of African American soul music…based on new experiences, changing times, world events and told with new vocabularies and with new musical and sonic technologies. You niccas can’t deny your core….We just links in a very long chain….
Jovi said it best perfect your MTF craft period. Especially nowadays. You’re telling me you have recourse after recourse and you can’t come up with some new shit. Nowadays you the internet that gives you Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, MySpace etc. (marketing) You can download the stupidest software on earth frutyloops and start making beats and practising. Common what’s NY excuse? Ow no the Labels..man Fuck the Labels do it on your you forece the labels to come to you and not the other way around. If your hot they have to pay up! So who holds the key?
Ebro is part of the hypocrisy and problem they can easily support new york artist overnight like in the days of Rocafella payola ( no Knock to JayZ and them they really had hit records). A crazy BMF type crew from NY got to have a hot MC with deep pockets to literally buy radio airplay thats it…….
