In written statements to RTA police, three witnesses said Lane struck Hughes before he punched her. Two of the witnesses said Lane was intoxicated when she got on the bus. According to the statement Hughes gave to RTA police, he said Lane boarded the bus without paying, as she said she had “left her bookbag.” Hughes closed the door and drove to the next stop. Hughes said Sept. 25 he did not wish to pursue charges against Lane. He signed a refuse-to-prosecute form Sept. 26.

Yes, the female was out of control and wrong for hitting the bus driver. But the bus driver’s reaction was excessive, he must keep his cool and realize he is dealing with a woman. He should of just ignored the woman and not let the altercation escalate. That sort of blow could have killed her. I’m pretty sure he could have knocked out Mayweather with that punch, I’m shocked she was able to get up after that.

The bus driver should expect to be prosecuted in criminal court and also held responsible in civil court. I pray that this woman in question is also held responsible for her role in this situation. This woman in my opinion is no victim, especially since she INSTIGATED the whole thing.

If you can throw a punch you better be prepared to take one. Women think they should be respected just because they’re women. That’s not the case. If you want respect then act like it. Once a women starts acting up and physically hitting someone she is no longer being seen as a women, but as a threat. And some people (men, women or otherwise) will deconstruct that threat in a hurry. The Bus driver could have done a lot of things to calm the situation. But in the heat of the moment you can’t blame him and say what you would have done. You weren’t there.

I’m disgusted and quite honestly scared by everyone’s reaction to this video. It’s not just “she’s a woman” or “it could have been your mother, your sister, you daughter etc.” its the fact that he’s a bus driver in a professional setting and would much rather punch the sh** out of a TEENAGE girl instead of calling the cops or handling this situation based on whatever protocol he learned in being trained. Neither behaviour is acceptable but this bus driver should not be considered “heroic”
i’ll also add two things. I have been on the bus where the bus driver did experience a similar situation with a slew of kids (after summer school?) acting unruly and throwing derogatory comments in his direction. He promply stopped the bus and refused to move the bus until the kids got out and when the kids continued to give him trouble he called the authorities. Obviously this was a piss off for me at the time as i wanted to get home on time but looking back i think that was handled much better than this.
I’ve also talked to a bus driver who said to avoid an escalated turn out like this he would much rather just let the customer ride rather than hassle them. You never know what kind of crazy they may be and one fare isn’t as harmless in the big scheme of things.
