With Kendrick Lamar releasing his debut album, “Good Kid, m.A.A.d city,” I’m reminded of when, The Game, first came out and dropped, “The Documentary.” Just like Kendrick Lamar’s debut, The Game’s first album also got a lot of critical acclaim and was influenced by Hip Hop legend Dr. Dre. Which album would you say is better?

50 cent wrote the game record
KL already dropped 30 mixtapes before his debut so the shock effect is less than when Game 1st dropped.. Also; Game had that full Dre sound where KL decided to stay closer to his own sound.. Love them both, picked Game though..
you mean the game and 50cents album lol 50 wrote all them records
This guy’s right. 50 did have ALOT of influence on this album (writing, producing, and featured on 3 songs). Plus this was when 50 was on top of the world.
you cannot compare these albums, the games production and writers were epic. KDots budget was no where near the documentary, Nigel, sir, you are an idiot for even thinking about comparing these albums.
So a big budget makes one album better than another? Lamar didn’t have Dr. Dre behind him? wtf are yo talking about?
He did good cuz of 50 Cent, nonetheless it was a great album.
Game had the better debut. He had consistent hits on his albums and his singles were all good (mostly because 50 was featured on all of them except Dreams and Put You on Game). Then factor in that game sold 5 million records and him and 50 are still eating off of that even to this day.
people who voter are obviously idiots, documentary is never mantioned as classic album
oh and odawg u a moron dawg
and see people lile Prestigous who compare singles, and better promotion and selling (?!) what the fuck does it have to do with body of work and music :/ rap fans are becoming biggest idiots on earth
Says the nigga who can’t even spell mentioned right or type a logical sentence. WTF is “people who voter are obviously idiots”? We’re the idiots? Bitch fall back. Game’s first album was a classic and had a good body of work. I didn’t say Kendrick Lamar’s album was trash or anything. His album is just as good. I give Game the edge because he created a bigger splash in the business at the time (whether that be because of promo or other reasons.
the game did but back then it wasnt no mixtapes and dre look like he took more part constructing the album and 50 had put a stamp on it too and was helping him by putting hooks on alot of them songd kdot shit still fire though
BOTH ARE CLASSIC ALBUMS! But there are from 2 different ERA & DECADES…That like comparing PAID IN FULL to REASONABLE DOUBT!…U can only compare albums that are in the SAME ERA & DECADE!
One of you niggas said 50 wrote Documentary lmfao.
that’s some high school fairy tale, you have to know by now that Game > 50.
come on real talk. game a legend game way better
Here is my opinion and I might be wrong on this but I feel The Games album was more “single’s driven” album vs Kendrick’s album being more of a total piece of work with a more consistent theme. But they both were good but if I had to pick one I would pick I would pick Kendrick’s because I love complete albums. I think Kendrick’s album stands out more in today’s “time period” b/c its rare that artist come out today w/o 78 features per record and he’s talking about more then liquor, being a drug kingpin and getting chicks to suck his dick for some trukfit…. LOL
Basically what I’m trying to say is I think Kendrick’s album might of gotten overlooked if it came out in 05 and if the Game’s album would of come out in 2012 if probably wouldn’t sell as many albums as he did in 05. But if both would of came out in 2012 I think they probably would of had the same amount of records sold.
I can’t compare these in good conscience. They are of two different eras. Kendrick’s album was more cerebral and storytelling, Game’s had bangers.
people are still listening to game’s first album. excuse me, game and 50 cent’s collabo album. lol.
that was a question. “people are still listening to game’s first album?”. that’s not a classic. it’s gathering dust in my crib. y’all are wilding.
theres no comparison here. thats like asking who’s better: Cheif Keef or J.cole?
Good Kid Maad City is TRASH.
the documentary is classic in my opinion, love that cd. Kendrick’s cd is alright
gkmc is the better body of work. Game might’ve had more popular singles but no question gkmc is album of year….the album is like a movie
kendrick is the better rapper by far too. kendrick’s talent competes with rap legends like eminem, nas, n 3000
Game’s album came out at a time when debuts were expected to be amazing. Kendrick dropping GKMC in an era like this is huge.
50 only wrote the hook on 2 songs for Game. you niggas believed 50s hype. smh
KLs cd was dope. lots of people that dont really like or listen to hiphop, really are enjoying his cd. Games 1st joint was dope, but it was more for the streets
Haven’t heard Kendrick album yet, but I’m giving this one to game. Hands down. 1. West side story, 2. Dreams, 3. Put you on game 4. How we do 5. Like father like son 6. Start from scracth 7. Runnin 8. & the killer callabo “we ain’t” wit eminem. Jus put it in & Hit play. The only other debuts of the last 10 years that were great debuts are 1. Kanye, 2. 50 cent 3. Game 4. J Cole 5. B.O.B. & 6. Kendrick Lamar
the documentary was 50 cent 2nd album
The Game had a bigger machine behind him, he had 50′s hype behind him, but musically, I like Kendrick, you can tell he did this on his own, and u can tell that Game needed alot of help, because since that album, his music has fallen off terribly….. But Documentary was crazy, but that was half 50′s album and I skipped songs… I skip nothing on Kendricks…. its a album with a sick storyline
Game’s album had the most impact worldwide,GKMC is nice but i don’t think it will make the same impact Documentary had
But what albums did Documentary influence? Jeezys first album you could still see influence, Blueprint, College Dropuout, but i cant see what trends did Documentary set? It was cool album, and a strong 4.5 mics album, but its not CLASSIC. plus it has like 5 weak songs.
I will say Game’s album only becuase he bought the West Coast back when no one was really reppin the West, Snoop was, but he wasn’t really doing much. But regardless both albums are great, two different era’s, Game had the interscope/G-unit/Dre/50/Jimmy Iovine machine behind him.
The Documentary is a more listenable album, mostly because of the all-star production (Cool & Dre, Havoc, Just Blaze, Dr. Dre etc). Conceptually, Kendrick’s is better because Game’s album was pretty much put together like a IKEA cabinet.
In the end, I think Game’s album is a little better because he had 50 at the top of his game (most of the singles were supposed to be for 50 & Yayo’s upcoming records) and it gave Game the crisp, polished sound to go along with his “fuck you, im from Compton” attitude.
Lyrics – GKMC
Production – Documentary
Features – Documentary
Creativity – GKMC
Overall Sound – Documentary
I love how ppl say 50 only wrote the hook to 2 songs. Well he does the hook on 3 songs (Westside Story, How We Do, Hate It Or Love It), you really think anyone writes a hook for 50? Do you honestly believe Games came up with Hate It Or Love It? And you look at any of his singles after that, his hooks have never sounded like Higher, Church For Thugs or Special (granted Nate Dogg did that hook). He did 5 hooks tops on that album.
Documentary wins this one for me.
GKMC is a great body of work and tells a story but you definitely have to be in a particular mood to listen to it, the vibe is chilled but if I’m honest after about 2 lis1tens through I was bored as f***. I cant say that I’ll be listening to this in 5 years (maybe Bitch Dont Kill My Vibe & Sing About Me). Also those hyping about listening all the way through, I can pretty much guarantee that most of you skip “Backstreet Freestyle” (if you don’t, you should… its no 22 2′s thats for damn sure… album filler man). I already moved onto Meek. I compare him to Talib, SICK lyricist, well respected but too many yawn records.
Documentary lasted the test of time… 7 years later and I can still go back and bump the album (not just the singles (Runnin, Start From Scratch, Dont Need Your Love & Where I’m From still get thrown in a couple playlist). I would agree about Game falling off too but RED Album (first half e.g. track 1-11) was NUTS!!! most people slept on it but trust me it was a smash. Looking forward to Jesus Piece
Kendrick could had used some help for hooks. If 50 cent help him on the hooks maybe it would have been good, but no where near a classic, no disrespect. Dre is a good producer, but if there is no song it is just lyrics behind sound. The album just needed a concept, but the picture was definitely cool.
XXL 5/5 stars
outta90s 5/5 stars
end of discussion
The Game For sure! Way more of an explosive rapper…
Game got Kendrick by far on the debute album heat, and Game can write hooks he’s did it on he’s debute BWS mixtape which is classic to this day aong with the Docmentary yall do that homework
I was thinking of this topic the other day. Obviously, we all know Game & Kendrick are two totally different artist but again, they’re both from Compton, they both were highly anticipated and Dre is both their mentor. Now for Kendrick I would say a better comparison is Lupe’s debut…I’ve always said Kendrick is the Lupe of this generation!!!! Someone who is socially conscious but had experienced a tough upbringing in an inner city environment. Both come from highly known gang inflicted environments and have escape there environments thanks to their music. But if we want to compare Game & Kendrick I would say Kendrick lyrically is a more polish rapper and was a more polished on his album. But Game put out one of the best commercially/critically acclaim debut albums ever! He got everyone’s best productions from Dre, Em, Just Blaze, Kanye & Timbo and proved he could attack each beat differently but still be himself. Conceptually, Game proved he could rap about several different things without losing that edge that he’s known for. As far as 50 is concerned, he only was apart of 3 songs and he only wrote the hooks. Don’t get me wrong they were great singles but lets not act like they were the best songs on the album. As of right now I have to give the nod to Game only because it not only was critically successful but it was also commerically successful as well. And it’s really hard to do both. Now I know people are going to say well it’s a different time and people don’t sell records like that. But if we put it in context the only other rappers who sold more records on their debut album was 50 & Em…..that’s pretty good In order for Kendrick to have match that in this day and age he would have to match what Drake & Nicki did on their debut!
first comment of hiphop is just dumb. Like u have no intelligence whatsoever. Everybody here that says 50 wrote that sh!t is just a baby. Yes 50 was featured on the album and helped game, but that doesn’t mean he wrote the whole album c’mon mann. Some people just can’t get over the fact that The Documentary is better then Get rich or die Tryin’. While i do find 50′s debut album also very good.
That was 50′s second album actually lol Game was lip syncing like Milli Vanilli lol
^^^^^^^^^^^ nigga please
Game album was/is better. i wont say its a certified classic but def 4.5/5. gave the west a new breath although it was short lived.
In retrospect u can say The Documentary was all 50 & Dre bt when that shit first came out Game was the man so I gotta still give him credit. Idk which is better. Documentary was kinda of a re-introduction to the gangsta west coast while #GKMC is the story of my generation. Prolly gotta give it time to compare
Yeah game album hottest songs consist of either 50 Cent writing them or 50 Cent being on them, plus 50 buzz was the reason that album sold wut it did. Cuz we all can see game is week now wanting 50 Cent help
I love both debuts…………..but THE DOCUMENTARY BY FAR WAS BETTER. Had plenty of bangers and a some different songs that still mashed together that made it knock hard. Kendrick is an amazing lyricist and MC and very creative, like Q-Tip, Nas, etc, real thought provoking music. But Game he had 50/G-Unit/Dr.Dre/Eminem/Interscope/ and the whole westcoast from hood to hood. bangers for every street nigga that been through the struggle and it was polished.
WRITING A HOOK IS WHAT 50 DID ON A FEW TRACKS IDK WTF PEOPLE talking about wrote the whole album or a whole song GAME WRITES HIS OWN LYRICS……….AND DOCUMENTARY IS A CLASSIC
wouldnt even make sense to ask this question 10 years from now, let alone now. Different times. i voted game because its more classic but its more classic because its older.. give it time ninjas
game had less ghost writers on his lp co i gotta give it to him
lol whoever is saying Documentary isnt better is tripping the fuck out, THE DOCUMENTARY IS CLASSIC FROM BEGINNING TO END
Documentary was one of the best hip hop albums of all time. Definition of Classic
