Production Wise:
Somebody name Kanye’s 20 greatest beats and then let’s find out how many “associate” producers were on those tracks with him and how much those tracks sound like the original music he sampled it from. Most of it sounds identical to the original track.
Kanye has a great ear for taking music that isn’t hiphop and then introducing it to hiphop by simply rhyming over it and changing very little of it. when I read his credits its like 4 or 5 producers on 1 track for a lot of his most recent work.
Kanye is a great all around artist but he is by far the most overrated producer in the world and if his music is perfect, he has a ton of other people as well as the original artists to thank for it. Again, I’ll wait for someone to post his 5, 10, 15, 20 greatest songs and beats and then we can begin to dismantle that bullshit.

I recognize most of Kanye’s samples when i hear them, and i think wow this dude is crazy with it, how did he come up with this perfect pattern around this sample. Everyone has the same music available to them and nobody is putting together quality samples like ye. Calling him overrated isn’t wise. Who exactly is the best producer? MOST producers have a sound you go to them for, when you go to Kanye that sound is more diverse. Once again not sure what your criticism is, there are videos already breaking down his samples which usually makes people appreciate it more. Thats artistry not overrated.

@Narco… In my opinion a great sample is something Havoc did for Shook Ones Part 2. There was a video that came out about 2 years ago where they finally found/broke down the sample he used from a Herbie Hancock song, the beat he built around it is completely different and the sample is only noticeable after the beat is broken down.
That, in my opinion is true talented sampling and true talented beat making.
What Kanye does is take sounds that he is exposed to (a lot of time just by being overseas) and raps over them. He also uses several other producers on the song and that’s a lot of input to just give one person “genius” credit. Kanye has a great ear for music, but there was a point in time I said Rick Ross had a great ear for music too.
Ofcourse I’m not criticizing him for giving credit to other producers he works with, that doesn’t even come across in my first statement. I am saying there are far better producers that do more work on their own, sample songs and build their own beats around those samples. Kanye is simply a guy who hears music and is able to rap over it and make it sound good, all credit to that…. but that is not “genius” by a long shot, that’s adventurous and it pays off for him well.
I still want someone to take the challenge, give me your top 5, 10, 15 etc Kanye beats and let’s see how similar they are to the original and how much he didn’t build anything around it and just raps over the beat, and let’s see how many producers are on the one track, dude is highly overrated.

I’m sorry to be “that” guy but “All of the Lights” is my favorite Kanye song. There is a difference between sampling and writing a song inspired by another. Ye may have taken a short motif from Conti here and there but coming from a music history major, this is how music has worked since I don’t know, like maybe the Baroque era.

I would say Ye is the greatest music mind in hip hop. Yes he samples, yes Consequence used to write his rhymes, yes he has many people co producing his tracks, but still no one manages to blend hip hop with soul music, club music, euro music with raw lyrics and do it in a way that is appealing to the masses. No one is able to combine all these elements of music and lyrical form in the way that Ye does.
Jay-z said “Went on MTV with du-rags, I made them love you.” Ye almost singlehandedly changed the fashion game in hip hop. If it weren’t for him, dudes might still be rockin throw backs. Well Kanye made it so that rappers such as Big Sean, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Lupe Fiasco, etc etc have been able to have a rap career. If it wasn’t for Ye, the game would still be full of studio gangstas.
Ye brought common into the mainstream, resurrected Pusha and Q-Tip’s career… catapaulted JOhn Legend’s career… made Big Sean, made kid Cudi… big part of THE BLUEPRINT (greatest hip hop album of all time). Does tracks with hip hop greats, i.e. RZA, Pete Rock, Raekwon…
Kanye has also been one of the only artist in hip hop who is not an industry puppet. He makes the music HE wants to make and he says whats on his mind and how he feels. Dude is strictly about the music, he doesn’t do endorsements, he’s not an image conscious commercially driven rapper and he takes risks.
If it weren’t for Kanye, I don’t know where hip hop would be.
