Twenty-four New Yorkers were hit by gunfire, one fatally, over 24 hours of violence this weekend, prompting Mayor Bloomberg to call the bloody stretch “unconscionable” and demand action from Washington.
The eruption of shootings from 6 a.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday left the mayor livid and the parents of three wounded children distraught and angry.

Two cops were wounded in a gun battle that capped off a terrifying spate of shootings that killed three and marred Brooklyn’s West Indian Day Parade. The violence that Mayor Bloomberg mentioned yesterday—25 shot in one day—grew as another six people were shot in Brooklyn by this morning. The Post reports, “Police sources believe the three shootings this morning are connected to the pre-dawn festivities leading up to today’s West Indian Day parade.”
Apparently four were shot—one fatally—at a barbecue on East 54th Street after midnight, a man was shot at Linden Boulevard and Nostrand Ave at 4:24 a.m. and a woman was shot on Empire Boulevard at 6 a.m. today.
The other 25 people were shot in “14 separate incidents in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx” between 6 a.m. on Saturday and 6 a.m. yesterday, according to the Daily News.

like nicolas cage said in lord of war gun don’t kill people. people kill people, guns are just a tool to kill people. there is numerious problems as to why there is so much violence over the weekend but it’s really a wake up call. one of the main issues is that there is alot of people unemployed and are fed up with the sitiutions they are now living in. i won’t say giving many of these people jobs will help but it will shape some of the people to be more productive in society. another factor is ignorance. when you have these kids (and i say that to even young adults cause they don’t know how to act) not thinking about what guns do and just want to fire back at a gang member cause of the colors he has or want to get revenge and don’t care who you shoot then that is a major problem. when you have these kids thinking being the next waka flocka or the next Lil Wayne is the thing to be and they try to portray that that’s a problem. what these people need is a outlet a place or something for them to do and feel like they are doing something positive not only for them but for their community. the problem is also what kinda environment they are in. if you have a kid from the projects or from the hood that doesn’t have a park to play in or basketball court to play in or even a skatepark for them to skate even a center for them to enhance their skills to make them productive people they will quickly get lost in the gangsta life and hustlin to make a quick buck instead of them learning the tools to do the same hustlin, instead of a 8 ball, he giving you a service or a product that can help give him a sense of worth. i read about this today and shit makes me sick cause there is life a life you can potentially take from a family there’s ways to enjoy yourself without converting to violence. i know it’s hard to be productive when there isn’t jobs out there but there is also places you can go to that can give you some type of enjoyment even if it’s for a little bit. we are turning into Chicago right now. i feel things are gonna get worse before things will get better.

These guys using New York and Mexico as an example to condemn the banning of firearms as a viable means of reducing gun crime are idiotic. These two examples are inherently flawed given that they are both surrounded by other territories where legal fire arms can be purchased freely and easily smuggled in. Until Washington decides to implement stricter controls across the board initiatives at the State level will always fail.

It’s Terrible what happened at The Parade, but Truthfully speaking every year there are incidents, Million(S) of us are out there, no matter the race, violence is going to happen, we’re all out there drinking and partying and it’s not strictly people from The West Indies, there’s so many different nationalities, it’s SIMPLY an EXCUSE to get rid of the parade.
