Here’s my proposed solution-have the Wayans brothers do a parody film of these TP films (like “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka” was a blaxploitation parody, and “Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood” spoofed the hood coming-of-age films)

I would CERTAINLY go see it on opening day

Smooth brotha that will run up in your baby mother!

I’m only 22 yrs old but I agree with the brother. . . partially. I think it’s a double edge sword, on one hand you have to admit it’s a bit coonish, but on the other many of our people particularly in the south can relate to Tyler Perry’s films. I think it’s up to any artist to educate his/her audience, I’ve never felt that with any of Tyler’s films, Spike’s definitely.

I suppose one could feel more hopeful and inspired after a Tyler Perry flick, and that in itself is great, but I’m not sure he challenges his viewers, informs, or even educates them. I’m not sure how exactly I feel but about Tyler Perry, I don’t think he’s doing it maliciously I bellieve he really wants to inspire people, but I can’t but help feel a certain way when I watch his films.

Anyone else care to share their thoughts?

I don’t think or feel Spike is hating on Tyler Perry @ all. Especially not over him making money because Spike is has millions. I do agree with him tho. I watch Tyler Perry’s movies and I can’t help but to shake my head. All his movies are the same and display below average acting in them. I think Spike Lee is hands down a better director and writer than Tyler Perry because he’s willing to do different things. Just my opinion tho

Just like hip hop in a sense. We keep saying put more substance in the music but the masses won’t support it and without the masses we can’t afford to provide the material. Spike acts like his films “School Daze” and “Do The Right Thing” were pure substance & education. Watching those movies when I was younger raised no conscience of mine. It was only when I became an adult that understood the real messages. Before they were just movies about college & Brooklyn. Without the popularity of those films there’d be no capital to produce “Miracle at…”.

I personally haven’t watched “Meet The Browns” but it seems to mimic a show like “Mama’s Family” and I’ve never heard comments like it was setting the race back. Tyler Perry’s other show does carry social messages & Spike must have never watched before. Seems like Tyler uses the comedy to reel in the type of viewers he wants to deliver his messages to. So what’s wrong with that. I for one don’t care for pure dramas so his process worked on me.

    To add…

It’s just not the era for saturating the public with so many conscience themes in art, tv, music, & film. Even though it probably should, it’s really all about timing. When the time comes everybody jump in!

Damn ppl cant voice there opinions anymore now cuz its always back to “HATING”…Tyler Perry sucks and makes black ppl look ignorant and foolish…Spike Lee is a beast and films reach alot deeper than Tyler Perry’s coon movies…Just watch Malcolm X and tell me if Spike is hating…

    @2,

I’m rocking with you on this one. I’m a black, 26 year old and is real diverse when it comes to different things (music,movies,etc.). But when It comes to TP movies, I serious cant vibe with it. Personally, they’re so damn cheesy. But I did like why did I get married, and the other movies that EXCLUDED MADEA. I’m not hating on TP because he’s a talented dude and I can relate to some of his movies but most of them be SERIOUSLY…OVER THE TOP and EXTRA!

I wouldn’t say he makes black people look ignorant because some blacks can seriously relate to the movies, which I can too but my Grandma was wild and crazy like that and I had crazy uncles and wild aunts but it was NEVER this extreme. There are a few white people at my job that LOVES his movies and be dying laughing at his movies. And its weird because I’m like, that movie was horrible, and they look at me sideways like, every black person likes TP movies, for example madea goes to jail…HORRIBLE!

And some of the actors and actress he chooses can’t act, or they are talented actors and actress but are playing the wrong role in TP movies. AND DON’T get me started on the Meet The Browns!….SMH SMH….I didn’t last 3 minutes watching it.

Does anyone feel me on this?

But big props to TP he’s getting them $$$, keep doing your thing homie!!
    You too SPIKE!

tyler perry’s films are only for the ignorant. you have to be a complete fool to be entertained by that shit.

  12. 12.29.09 at 4:39 pm
    WOW

Get the FUCK outta here. Who are you to tell your audence what kinda movie they should like?? This is an art form… and the masses decide what is or isnt good art. If people don’t like it, IT SUCKS. PERIOD. Tyler Perry is able to connect with his audience. I call that successful art.

It’s just like people trying to tell Soulja what kind f music to make. If one artist does better than the other, it’s because people like his art better.

    Bitter old bastards.

Here we go again. In 2009, an opinion equates to hate in the eyes of so many. What you dont understand is that Spike Lee is a huge advocate and activist in the black community. He sees that it is important that the message that the black man puts out is not what the “white man” wants to hear. When I see certain shows like COPS, Tyler Perry productions, Flava of Love and Plies music videos, the first thing I think is “I hope no older white folk are watching this”. We dont need those who naturally judge us to be justified in their thoughts. You cant honestly tell me that Madea makes you proud as a black man/woman. I feel no connection to that character. But I felt a connection to Denzels character in “Mo’ Betta Blues” or to Anthony Mackey’s character in “She Hate Me”. Like Chris Rock said, “Theres niggas and then theres black folk”. At the end of the day, look at the resumes of both directors and see who they cater to.

Spike Lee is the illest black film maker and i agree with him …but on another not tyler perry movies cant for with miracle at st. anne ….not at all… if you are a movie fan such as myself i enjoy the creativity behind films the way they are shot and presented to message as well. all tyler perry movies are the same if you seen one you seen them all…. Malcolm X hot Crooklyn hot etc Spike Lee is mentally on another level

    izreal

Grow the hell up. why cant he state his opinion without morons like #4 saying fuck spike lee… spike lee made his first movie with his own money…. a broke cat from brooklyn…. if it wasn’t for spike… there would be no tyler perry.. no john singleton…hughes brothers.. cause hollywood wouldn’t allow black directors to get any films made..

he has “earned” his right to state his opinion without being disrespected by you folks that probably have done nothing substantial with your lives yet..

and BTW .. and shere volume does not dictate what is art and what is not.

Spike lee has a right to his opinion but he should have maybe kept that to himself! When martin lawrence big mama came out i dont recall hearing somebody complaining about black man/woman image! When eddie murphy Nutty Professor came out did spike lee make the same comments! I think he is just bitter towards TP because he keeps on talking about this! I respect him but disagree with spike! I think people Hate on TP because his messages are more based on the christian faith, believing God in the good times like the bad times, never lose hope! Spike should concentrate on making new movies! as far as being ignorant, if u were ignorant before watching a movie, its not 1h30 that is gon take all that ignorance away, people want to be entertained! and frankly if u dont want to watch something nothing is stopping u from watching it! But wat image is spike lee showing about black people by criticising another black director’s art! at the end of the day both have their own talent! spike has one vision, TP his own! everybody can’t be spike! Spike call TP and TEll him that his movies are wack!!!lool!getta outta here!

    .......

GTFOH…..I’m tired of people trying to shove positive messages down our throats. They talk about how all these socially conscious movies and music get no attention and the ignorant stuff does. Well guess what bitches? Ignorant shit is more entertaining than socially conscious shit and at the end of the day the purpose of movies and music is to entertain. If you are trying to sell socially conscious messages in the entertainment lane don’t be surprised if the shit don’t sell because you are selling it in the wrong format. You are in the wrong lane. Thats why Tyler Perry calls the coon characters “bait”. Those characters get people to come to the theaters to see the movie and there is enough of these coon characters to keep people entertained but at the same time there is a lot of good deep stories stuck in between that. Don’t be mad at Tyler for being smart enough to trick his audience into watching a movie that ends up about some deep shit.

  18. 12.29.09 at 9:40 pm
    BitchPlease

Spike Lee needs to concentrate on doing him. Stop talking about another mans art focus on his on. Spike Lee has classic movies. Tyler Perry movies and tv shows are fun and entertaining and they do get a point across. He does connect with his audience. Last thing it bothers the fuck out of me that black people still give a damn about what the white folks think. If you’re not being you then who are you? END

lol One more thing these celebrities, politics, and musicians etc.. always trying to teach the young youth but they’re doing it all wrong. You can’t be watered down trying to teach the next generation. You have to be all out uncut these days. These young people grow up fast.

@16 martin lawrence didnt direct big momma, i believe its a director to director thing,
Spike got on Clint Eastwoods case because of no black representation in the two ww2 movies that he did, which were good movies i thought, and with the TP thing, its comedy, and i believe that it is decent comedy but its the same movies over and over, I dont understand why the church flocks to see it but thats a whole nother ball game, but im from the south and TP is a king down here to BLACK WOMEN lol WOMEN, and thats where he gets his money, SPIKE LEE gets respect from everyone everywhere because from what i see he does his research and brings about social argument, and for #7 School Daze making u think of college at a young age seems like a win to me, cause i damn sho wont thinking about college as a youngster, not seriously until i was a senior and ready to graduate

Tyler Perry’s movies were cool at first because it presented a breathe of fresh air in the film industry, but running around dressed as a women and recycling his same old plot lines is getting boring. Typical tyler perry movie goes like this: embattled black women gets done wrong (generally by a man), battles through it and gets her life back together while the man that did her wrong life goes to shit. Throw in Tyler Perry dressing up as someone and telling tired ass jokes and you have a typical tyler perry movie. At least spike offers diversity in his film that doesn’t just aim for one audience and thats what separates him from a tyler perry.

SPIKE IS VOICING HIS OPINION NOT HATING.
SPIKE MATERIAL HIS KNOWN AND RESPECTED WORLWIDE
IM IN FRANCE AND HE’S VERY KNOWN AND RESPECTED HERE.
HE CONTRIBUTED TO BUILD A BETTER REPRESENTATION FOR AFRO AMERICAN WORLDWIDE AND PRESENTED THEIR STRUGGLE TO THE WORLD.
I UNDERSTAND PEOPLE ALSO NEED TO BE ENTERTAINED AND HAVE FUN (TYLER PERRY)
BUT IT DOESNT HAVE TO BE IGNORANT… OR AT LEAST DIVERSITY IS A MUST.

  23. 12.30.09 at 3:42 am

tyler perry stop with the dresses please

I suppose “Married with Children”, the Godfather, etc.. was a bad look on the European community… get over it… it’s entertainment…. Sounds like a bit of sellout jealousy to me Spike..
