I don’t see it as a diss to Jesus at all. If you read the lines before that line, it seems as he is saying you can’t be a whore all week and go to Church on Sunday to save you. You can’t just be innocent in Church and be sinning all week after that. How do you interpret Jay-Z’s line that has caused a lot of controversy?

It’s very clear the entire verse is speaking on the downfalls of living in the Big Apple (New York) especially from a young (southern area or rural area) girl moving there. The lines in question “Hail Mary to the city your a Virgin, and Jesus can’t save you life starts when the church ends” 1) shouldn’t be taken out of the context of the entire verse and 2) is just a play on words. If you look at this from nobody’s point of view and just try to base your opinion on facts, it seems like at the LEAST, jay is sending messages through music and videos. I dont think he is the devil, but i do know that he is the most influental rapper of our time. This means that almost everybody listens to what he sais, and nothing goes unnoticed. He had to realize that saying something like JESUS CANT SAVE YOU, in any context would be pretty influential. I mean, most people will misinterpret the line, but it makes NO DIFFERENCE. The effect is still the same. Now the general consensus is that Jesus can’t save you, and this is neither true nor false to any given individual. Its faith. I think what we can learn from this is that Jay Z does not believe in God, and nobody that does believe in God cannot support his music. I think we can at least agree on that.

If you are a “whore” all week and you are going to church on Sunday, and really accept Christ as your savior you can be saved. My thing is this, if you don’t pick up your bible and truly read and study the scriptures and get to know Jesus through his word and develop a relationship with him, who is Jay Z or any person to speak on anything regarding Christ.

“Jesus can’t save you, life starts with when the church ends.” Life starts when the church ends? That has nothing to do with the context of that verse or any of the other previous verses…That verse lets you know Jay’s agenda. It clarifies that he aint just talking about:
“You can’t just be innocent in Church and be sinning all week after that.” Are we in elementary school? How do you deduce that interpretation anyways? Life starts when the church ends is self-explanatory. And Jesus can’t save you? According to Christianity He has already died for our sins and has saved the World. To say that Jesus can’t save you in any context is demonic.

Ummm first of all the church don’t save noone. Nowehere in the Bible does it say that the Church saves you (not implying that there is no need for Church k)…But all over the New Testament you will read that Jesus Saves! You can only either be doing the will of God or the will of the Devil. so why are we so surprised about these secular artist!

Well the way I look at it is that the whole concept of Jesus Christ being the son of God has no proven validity. The idea is fundamentally flawed. Why? Because, if I Jesus was crucified, and the act served as payment for the sins of man. Who collected the debt? Was it the Devil? (then why would God pay ransom to a lesser entity). Was it God? (Why would God pay himself?). A third party would suggest an entity superior to God. (impossible). A debt can not be paid without a collector, so who was it?
This question will never be fully answered. don’t believe me..go ask your preacher, pastor, who ever.
So if the fundamental principle of Jesus and the need for the crucifixion is flawed…what does that say for a religion that makes his resurrection the cornerstone of its belief?

I thought this was called BETWEEN the lines. I respect your love for GOD. But i really think you have it wrong. First let me give my interpretation. I read it as J saying that SOME people can’t be saved because they are so wrapped in there sins. NOT that they could NEVER be SAVED, but at the present time it’s not their focus in life. Clearly J believes in GOD. But he himself is not focused completely on being saved, or recognizing that he has been already. J might have done better by not mentioning GOD at all in this song. Cause he himself is mentioning GOD here and there in his music, but then turns around and glorifies bad things. So i agree it would be a blessing for him to turn COMPLETELY to GOD and use his fame to express to the world, about the glory of GOD’s gifts to us all.Maybe some day. So thats MY say on the lyrics. I know, if thats what he meant why not just say it, right? Well, this IS HIP HOP. An art form that requires you to READ BETWEEN THE LINES. Thank yo for this opportunity to get deeper into something very important. I googled the lyrics and found the link to this blog. Because i too was curious about what he meant with his lyrics. It was a bold move, speaking about Jesus and not to mention the Mother of Jesus all in one rhyme. I am Roman Catholic and working hard on my journey to be closer to GOD. Not quite there yet. In my younger years i was a DJ and i find it hard to let my love for hip hop to go away. It’s good to see both views of these issues. Those who agree and don’t, those who believe and disbelieve. A heated debate indeed… But I have a question (may be a dumb one, but hey…) – Has anyone actually asked Jay what he meant by the statement? There’s been a lot of personal interpretations, assumptions, and speculation about the meaning behind the line…but rather than being offended by what could be a simple misunderstanding, wouldn’t it make more sense to just ask him? I’m a Christian, and I stand firm on what I believe. But I also believe in giving the benefit of the doubt. We’ve all had our words misconstrued and taken out of context at one point or another, so why jump on the offensive and kick him under the bus when we don’t really know what his intention was behind the statement? I love Jesus and I love the church, I’ve been saved for more than 1/2 my life…but sometimes the church can be the most closed minded body that one could ever encounter. I’m sure if he knew that the question was raised by so many, he would release a statement to provide clarity. In fact, I read in another article that he changed one word in that line in a live performance.

This comment isn’t to debate the validity of the church, the existence of God, or the diety of Christ – I believe what I believe, and you’re free to believe what you believe … that’s the beauty of free will. Well, there’s a lot of interesting opinions out there. I’d say of all of them, the Realist1 (#54) is closest to the mark. I think the verse is about people coming to the city with big dreams and ambitions and becoming corrupted by its sin to the point where you cannot be saved. I’m going to add the exact lyrics that I analyze so that you can refer to them.
Lights is blinding,?
girls need blinders?

The first lines, “Lights is blinding/ girls need blinders/ so they can step out of bounds quick,” refers to ambitious young people who move to the city to follow their dreams. In a way, these people don’t engage in the everyday hustle of the city so they “wear blinders.” They don’t see or they choose to not see the everyday nitty gritty of the city. For instance, they don’t argue with the cabbie for charging you an extra 1/8 of the block. They are too focused on their dreams to get caught up in it. In the song, he says “GIRLS wear blinders,” but I could also see this line applying to young men too, like the “Mr. Wilson goes to Washington type.”
Jay-Z goes on to write that “the side lines is blind with casualties/ who sip the light casually, then gradually become worse/ don’t bite the apple Eve.” The people on the sidelines are those who came to the city with big dreams but they “sipped the light casually” and became “worse.” The city rubbed off on them and they became a little more kaniving and sinful. But these people were too naive to take it so they became “blind.” They thought they could keep up with the big boys but they couldn’t, so now they are on the sidelines and out of the game. The final lines, “don’t bite the apple Eve” are a warning to the dreamer: don’t think you can play the game. If you come to the city to pursue your dreams, then pursue your dreams. But don’t try to play the game and be a hustler because the city will destroy you.
I like the last lyrics the best: “caught up in the in crowd/ now you’re in-style/ and winter gets cold en vogue with your skin out/ the city of sin is a pity on a whim/ good girls gone bad, the city’s filled with them/ Mommy took a bus trip, now she got her bust out/ everybody ride her, just like a bus route/ Hail Mary to the city you’re a Virgin/ and Jesus can’t save you life starts when the church ends.” Let’s break that down. The first part of the song is about a girl, or boy, who’s headed for a fall and doesn’t realize it yet. She’s come to the city, joined the in-crowd, is putting down her dreams and values for what’s “in-style.” But when winter comes, ie the shit hits the fan, she hasn’t built up anything to protect her. Her hip social scene isn’t a stable network, and her “skin is out” which means that she’s dropped her higher-order functioning for the sin of the city. She’s a part of the herd now, just another “good girl gone bad.”
The next part of the song is pretty much the same. She took a “bus trip” (ie let her guard down and let her dreams and and values slip away) so now she has her “bust out” (she’s a sinner just like everyone else) so she gets ridden like everyone else. I like this next part the best. It’s especially good when you see it in the music video because Jay-Z is standing at the top of the Empire State building and looking down on the city beneath him and shaking his head as he says these lines. Its the knowing sadness of someone who has seen it all go down and been through it. Now he’s above it and sharing his wisdom, and also warning people who are going through it. The lines are “Hail Mary to the city your a Virgin.” What I think he is saying is, it’s just very sad that these dreamers come to the city and are destroyed by it. There’s nothing you can express other than sadness. The city has taken something so good and innocent (a virgin) and turned it so bad. What can you do other than say a “hail mary” and pray to a higher God?
The final line “Jesus can’t save you, life starts when the church ends” is similar to the previous lines. Basically, these people who have come to the city have taken a fall. There is nothing that can be done at this point. Jesus, their parents, their pastor won’t save them. They are going to have to go to church to clean up their lives and get their shit together. But they are so messed up from the experience that they will be on the tail-end of things even once church is done.
