Best… Album… Ever…
One Word To Describe illmatic ; CLASSIC!
its a must. if you dont have it in your hip hop collection, you aint a real hip hop fan.
I bet even Jay-Z bumps it on the regular LOL
Best rap album ever?No but still crack tho
Best hip hop album ever and culturally significant but cause It accurately paints a picture of ghetto youth in New York City in the early 90′s. It also re-defined the way hip-hop albums are produced.
Best hip hop album ever and culturally significant because* It accurately paints a picture of ghetto youth in New York City in the early 90’s. It also re-defined the way hip-hop albums are produced.
Still on the fence in regards to if Illmatic or Paid In Full is the GOAT hip hop album.
Greatest Album, EVER!
THE BEST HIPHOP LB OF ALL TIME. HANDS DWON
Best album of my time…I was in 7th grade when that shit came out.
Too bad he couldn’t replicate not an illmatic…but an album with that same feel…like Jay-Z did with RD and BP.
You cant replicate an Illmatic, like MJ couldnt replicate Thriller. Illmatic is hip hop’s Thriller. But what infuriates me is the fact that most if not all of Nas’s latter albums get thrown under the bus. Only shit LP he put out was Nastradamus, and even that had some gems. My nigga Nas is the most poignant, introspective and insightful lyricist of all time!
“Represent Represent!!!!” that’s my shit. it gets me hype as shit and im from the West Coast. “Memory Lane” is some smooth shit I fucks wit and…… “Life’s a Bitch till ya die….thats why we high cuz u never know, when u gonna go”………..
damn im bout to listen to that album right now. that’s an East Coast Classic but u know i gotta say All Eyez on Me is a West Coast Classic. Those are my two favorite albums of all time hands down.
Honorable mentions…….. Get Rich or Die Tryin, Reasonable Doubt, N.O.R.E. album, Nas’s I Am album, Makaveli, The Documentary, Doggystyle, The Chronic (1st one), Streetz Iz A Mutha (Kurupt) in no particular order
Never heard it
Best Hip Hop Album of all time..easy….that’s like the best closer in MLB…its Mariano Rivera and no one is even close to him at the second position….
My question is, if it is top ten albums in music history?…if every genre has one represented in the top ten, then it should be
PS….I think Noelle should be banned on the above post alone from this website…..
Needless to say he or she has made incredibly stupid comments before, but this one is just inexcusable…
If I’m the only one that thinks Noelle is an idiot then I will just shut up……I doubt it though
Classic I’m from the south and had a football game and my boy from NYC had Illmatic and he was listen to it. I said man what are you bumping and he let me hear it I was like I aint never heard nobody spit like this and after that day Nas became my favorite MC
It was good, I liked it back then but to call it the best ever? I don’t know about that….
How long before someone mentions Jay-Z or 50 Cent?
Doh!!!
See what I did there?

Hold up there Sally, that’s not to say I haven’t heard OF it.
But really, this is RealTalk, I respect your thoughts!!
I dont think Nas is the greatest rapper of all time, but illlmatic is the greatest rap record ever recorded of all time!
To never hear Illmatic and then comment on a hip hop site and other hip hop music is unacceptable……………….

Ok..
My favorite album and it has absolutely nothing to do with other people considering it the GOAT album
its hard to believe people give a shit about so many wack rappers when NAS is always going to be the best.
there is no thoughts bout its instant classic u can listen to track 1 to the last song and it got 5 mics i dont think no rappers has gotten 5 mics on there first album
Whats he doin now? #livinginthepast @ ALL yall
I wouldn’t say the best hip hop album ever. Top 5 yes.
So, is it comparable to Lil Kim? Didn’t she get 5 mics?
Do they..have the same content??
to #24 you would have been right that Nas gotten 5 mics on there first try. he really did, but the Source like back in 02, 03, “Re-Miced” some of the albums from the albums, so later it ended up, Raekwon’s first, Jay-Z’s first and BIG’s first all got 5 mics along with just classic albums that automatically are classics before the Source wasn’t even around yet.(Paid In Full, Straight Outta Compton, It Takes A Nation….etc.) The Source is responsible for alot of opinions in hip hop right now because of there magazine’s opinions.
#27 noelle, she got in her zizone with that album(I forgot the name but it’s the one where she went to jail after it came out). Can’t front, I see the effort. most albums ain’t shit today compared to “The Chronic”, Amerikkas Most Wanted”
oh I forgot, Ice Cube I think was the first to get 5 mics on his first try. and that album dropped like in 91 I think. Illmatic dropped in 94.

What is zizone?
lol at noelle and his beefs
so what if he never actually heard the album
now he knows
you niggas acting like you were born knowing everything about hip hop
i am a younger generation …i was first introduced to Eminem …..then i had to back track and get to pac and biggie …and then back track to to get to boogie down productions and im still back tracking nigga
so yea just chill
back on topic
illmatic …definite classic …not the best
definite top 5 uppper top 5
like where would you place “reasonable doubt” (top5) and “paid in full” (top5)….”get rich or die trying”(top10)….. the “eminem show”(top5).
Lmao shut up
Oh go, you are comin gat me like I am just not knowing about him@
God*
Illmatic is illmatic lol theres no other way to describe it. one of the best albums of all time and the best or second best rap album of all time. in my opinion i think its the best though
By the way, I preordered the book since I am a fan of the author and the artist the book is on….
tales from the hood – nas
first nas song i ever downloaded
noelle is a girl. in her zizone.
Resonable doubt>>>> illmatic
tales from the hood – dmx
ILLMATIC is by far the greatest hip hop album of all time. If someone cannot agree to that, they have to at least have that album in their top 5. Can’t wait to read Michael Eric Dyson book…. should be an interesting read.
reasonable doubt better than illmatic??! HAHAHA….this is how u kno these aint real rap heads….they dont know the history illmatic made….that it litterally created a new form of rappin that combined gangsta rap with intellectual rhymin that rakim did to create the intellectual thug image that defines new york hip-hop…camel face even sampled his shit…nas’ way of rhymin also paved the way for a subgenre “horror”core rap….there were very few if any that actually took rap into the deep poetic state nas did…
naw.. im just fuckin with you but thats really the first nas song i ever downloade LOL
ps nas was the first one on that “don” shit……then people started jackin his style sayin they were dons like biggie, big pun,jay-z etc do your research….illmatic one of the greatest albums to change the game in hip hop and stillmatic is probably the realest albums in terms of saying real shit that thoroughbreads goin through shit can relate to….what were other fags doin..talkin bout slappin bitches and bein fake hustlers
Best Hip Hop Album Ever Made!!!…Still The Best N Is Still Bumpin Til This Day….Every Track Created With Such Lyricism, Nas Was A Golden Child N At Nineteen Spit The Shit He Was Spittin, Crazy!!!!…..Now A Book, Im Coppin It For Sure….Fuck Wit It!!!
most them rap niggas are psychopaths man fuck nas
realtalk, get off nas’ cock. illmatic is 2nd best rap album next 2 RD. nas didnt spit any “don” shit till after RD came out. he never claimed to be a gangster or a hustler on illmatic. after jay came out with the real don shit, nas became Escabar. still one of the best tho.
to#46 I don’t know about nas being the first one on that “don” shit. yeah I remember him saying that on “Nastradamus” “first nigga to sing a hook on some TJ Swan shit”, how could he be the first on that “don shit” when on NY state of mind he sayin “Be havin dreams that I’m a gangster, drinkin moets, holdin techs, it’s a tough debate. on some mafioso type rap you gotta give it to Kool G Rap with his steelo. but at that time 94, 95, I always thought AZ gave Nas that vibe to be Nas Escobar since AZ is Sosa when they did “mo money mo murder” and introduced the firm. Biggie had Frank White(King of Ny) but that was 2nd album BIG, I ain’t trip off Pun sayin that but I know Fat Joe was on some Don Cartegena shit. and Jay-Z only did his album cover on some Don shit. closest cat I gotta say who took the name and really flipped on some mafia don shit was Big L (L Corleone)
w-w-w-.-n-e-t-s-o-w-n-t-o-w-n-.-c-o-m ————-30 Dollar nik-e sho-es,jorda-n sho-es,guc-ci sh-oes,lv sh-oes,su-pra sho-es.
Naw it was nas that actually made da don thing popular and he did start it…after illmatic in 95 he was on some esco shit but the lp dropped in 96 but all of his unrealesed stuff leading up to was on some don shit. then he did IWW then the firm…he truly ushered that type of rap. its funny to see people doing it now like rick ross…even ti tried to bridge the gap with ti vs tip which is alot like “I am” in the sense that nas tried to make something for his illmatic and IWW fans.
At the end of the day NAS is a problem and I love his music, style and the fact that he makes real mistakes like we all do. Illmatic was def the best hiphop album ever…stillmatic as hot as fuck too…honestly all of his albmums except for nastrudomus were all atleast 4.5mics which is crazy. and untitled is the best concept album ever..for him to have all of that content and still deliver a musically dope album is truly incredible if u ask me.
u aint see till it close u. 100 shell casing recovered and nobody dies? ~BEING REAL!~
Reasonable Doubt is a BOOTLEGG version of Illmatic
Jay is Nas’ biggest fan. He’s a stan actually…always mentioning Illmatic in his rhymes LOL
ed from coop city is a buffoon if he thinks all nas’ albums are 4.5 mics. nas’ good albums consist of illmatic, it was written, stillmatic, hiphop is dead, and nigger. nastrudomus, god son, streets disciple, i am, qb finest compilation, the firm… all these were not 4.5
#49 nas didnt come wit mafioso shyt after jigga n if he did it wouldnt be becuz of jigga mafioso rap wuz out b4 dat wit kool g rap, AZ, & RAEKWON
& ILLMATIC IN MY OPINION IS THE BEST ALBUM EVER!!!!!!!!!!!
1st ILLMATIC
2nd ONLY BUILT FOR CUBAN LINX
3rd READY TO DIE
^^^
MY TOP 3 FAVORITE ALBUMZ
hi hater! get nas’ sack out of your mouth. u prob never even heard reasonable doubt or illmatic. u jus want to hate on hov.
best album lyrically
One of teh best album ever…
superior mind
BEST HIPHOP ALBUM EVER, WITHOUT DOUBT
LYRICALLY AND SONICALLY
IF TRUE ESSENCE OF HIPHOP RAP IS BEATS AND RHYMES, ILLMATIC IS THE PERFECT MARRIAGE OF THE TWO.
SOME PPL WANNA BRING JAY Z INTO THIS AND MENTION REASONABLE DOUBT BUT……
HOW DO U COMPARE REASONABLE DOUBT TO ILLMATIC, WHEN EVEN STILLMATIC IS BETTER THAN REASONABLE DOUBT?
BEFORE I TAKE REASONABLE DOUBT, ILL TAKE ANY 5 MIC ALBUM FROM TCQ
Hi…reasonable doubt must have went over your head.. dont feel bad, ur not the only 1.
“u made it a hot line, i made it a hot song”
off the subject
i thought this was realtalkny no postings on the yankees since they won the world series thats no good i be up on here all the time but that not a good look thought was supposed to cover all the hot stuff at the moment
my favorite album. this real hot girl once told me she heard the worst album shed ever heard and it was called illmatic or some shit. Hot as she was i had to put her in her place.
Illmatic is better than any Jay-z album period!!!!
Nas is the Greatest emcee period!!!!!
People only try to hate on Nas to be different they know he the GOAT!!!!!
all his esco shit came from WU TANG actually but even still nas is the best to grace the mic i will cop anyting he drops since day 1 never thought nastrodamus was shit i liked it but i am a nas stanley lol thats my nigga i seen him every show he done in london since stillmatic came out
Where the fuck is distant relatives tho? that was supposed to come out aug 28
lol @ u lil niggas hating on me because I said Illmatic > RD
ask Jay-Z, he even said its probably the best album ever.
and im not even a big Nas fan actually. Its not like I bump Nas on the regular. Im just saying the album is a classic (not my favorite of all time tho)
Fans today hate to give an artist like Nas their props because the stans only care about money…lyrics don’t matter to these crack babies!!!! Nas IMO has got to be the most criticized artist in hip hop,,,,they haters can’t take the fact the Nas does not make commercial albums but he has commercial success with albums that are considered conscious…these whack commercial artists could not sale records if they actually talked about important topics in their music! Nas is DOAT
No doubt a classic in it’s own right & Dyson will give it great justice. Picking this up AsAp
1.Life After Death – Notorious B.I.G.
2. It Was Written – Nas
3. Hardknock Life Vol.2 – Jay-Z
My Favorite Albums of all time
killa, whoever the hell u are, stop talking like you know me,, ,,,come see me sometime, ill teach you hiphop
“u made it a hot line, i made it a hot song”
so what???????????
what you think is harder and more original, , creating lines out of thin air…..or taking lines that people already created, Nas, Biggie, Pac…..and make it into a “hot song” ???
people say some stupid shit sometimes
Nas in my opinion is a very socially akward type of guy but his music is so dope! The man is a musical genius…never afraid to approach different topics. That places him in a category all by himself. Nas never jumps on the hottest new artists in hip hop…he never dick rides these artists to make music with him. Nas is by far one of the most successful artist in hip hop that 90% of his music is considered to be conscious/underground but reaches mainstream success!!!!
Jay Z thought Nas was down and decided to try and kick him and got his ass bit
50 got a few jabs thrown at him by Nas and decided the best thing to do was to let a sleeping dog lie
lol, and ppl say jay smarter than 50
LOL, im still cracking up, this fool telling me Reasonable doubt went over my head
and you couldnt come with a better line than, i made it into a hot song lol
ill bet money that you didnt even hear reasonable doubt when it came out, tryin to catch up now lol
Definately one of the greatest albums of all time. Not just in hip hop, but music PERIOD.
I’m bout to go listen to it now!!!!
REPRESENT REPRESENT!!!
Noelle, can I ask you a question? I’m sure your a very nice person, and I’m not dissing you, but can you tell me why do you come on here and type stupid off the wall irrevelent bullshit all the time? Are you trying to be funny? Maybe I don’t have as much as a good sense of humor as you, but please, stop. It’s not funny.
NEGRO PLEA$E, what I pay is not stupid, I say RealTalk..how I am feeling. Why don’t you ask Hi Hater! the SAME question? I don’t intentionally hate, sire
You are really high tonight, REALLY REALLY HIGH.
It Is One Of The Best Albums Ever And Nas Is One Of The Best MC’s
Ok, Jay-Z’s RD is Great, But That Came After Illmatic, Like 2 Years
When Illmatic Dropped, Jay Was Still ChiggedieCheck-SlipTongueing Or Whatever
Illmatic Got Incredible Songwriting, Great Production … Not One Bad Song
CLASSIC
Nowadays We Should Be “Happy” With Albums With 3 To 4 Good Songs On ‘m
@ noelle ; why you throwing my name in this shit lol??? I really get what he’s saying. Sometimes you come on here and post shit like “i got up late today” or some other bullshit. LOL
now keep my name out ya mouth girl.
First of all…shout out to Micheal Eric Dyson for doing this book. Been a fan of his work for a while.
Ok…I agree that Illmatic is a hip hop CLASSIC and Nas’s best lp to date, BUT to say it’s the best lp EVER!!! That’s a ‘lil over the top. Lyrically it was a head of it’s time…but it didn’t have the same impact that a lot of the other classics that came out that same year.
Big’s READY TO DIE ran ’94 so did Outkast with SOUTHERNPLAYA….Those two lp’s CHANGED the game. Illmatic didn’t even go gold until ’96.
Not to take anything away from Nas and the emcee bible we call ILLMATIC. Let’s keep it real tho…to have the best lp of ALL time take more than just lyrics.
Nas is a legend, that speaks for itself.
“and my game so tight… and my aim so right and the range all white and i tame all dykes… all they say all night is” lol
Negro pleaase, she isnt doin it to be funny, she doin it to be noticed, which you are doing
nobody is that retarded, and aint shit funny about it
Hi Hater!..you make me wanna thro up..these is big deal topics hoe
fuck dat all his albums are classic !! …lol nah , but illmatic is definitely one of those albums .in hiphop that always will be remembered …”i had illmatic on bootleg, that shit was so ahead , i thought we was all dead” ..nas all day!
backlash that could easily been ill will! wtf?! yo! nas needs a cumbak album!
“I’ve never heard a Jay-Z song. I don’t listen to pop music,” Miley Cyrus
ROTFLMAO
Jigga , i know you been scared to go at anyone since Nas did somethin terrible to you, but maybe you can start slow…..go at miley cyrus atleast lol
lol fuckin idiot st bernard
“Check out my hair these aint curls these is peas/ peasy head still get paid, I’m COMBEN through G’s, please/”
“Blueprint’s in my White Ipod/ Black diamonds in my hassues piece, my god/”
“Danger approaches we’re like Wait! Who is this?/ let us save u sum trouble son wat size suit u is?/ this way after the ruger shoots through a few clips/ you can lay in ya casket just as you is/”
“I got 2 in hand/ in case I been drinkin seeing doubles I got 1 for you and your twin/”
“Sittn courtside Knicks and Nets give me hi-five’s/ nigga I be Spike’d out, I can trip a referee”
Aaaaah. Aaaah. Lol
“Hail Mary to the city your a Virgin/ and Jesus can’t save you, life starts when the Church end”
(Classic line)
“Hoover,Hova, both are american gangsters/ you choose who’s colder, rappers get nasty in the booth but I’m grosser/ I can’t even stomach myself, ulcer/”
“My hustle, so Russel/ I stretch work, Yoga/”
“Even better’s wat my uncle did/ I slip my demo tape in start beat my head/ peek out my eye, to see if he was beaten his/ he mine as well said beat it kid he’s on the list/”
I could continue… But I feel like.a blogger now. 1
Nas is one of the best no doubt & illmatic is a classic, but wuts up with all the hov bashing? Nas is in my top 3 dead or alive. One of the best lyrically, he’s had a long career but jay-z has paid the cost to be the boss. U don’t have 2 disrespect jay-z to respect nas. I think hov>>nas but I don’t have 2 bash nas 2 prove it. Praise nas if u want but jay-z’s name isn’t even in the article. And further more, the more yall bash a guy that has nothing 2 do with the post, the more u make it seem like u no he’s the best….think About it
best album ever.. lyrical crack from start to finish.. classic shit

Nas is the GOAT…some of ya are probably too young to remember that Jay used to rhyme like Twista…He changed his style after Illmatic came out. Guess who inspire all these cats?
lol at whoever said reasonable doubt was a bootleg to illmatic (yea right)
Illmatic goes hard as fuck im ready bump it in my whip today as I speak
the only thing I dont fuck with…its 9 tracks (excluding the Intro)?? thats way too short it feels like an above average EP when I hear it
all of my favorite debut albums by rappers in the 90s got least 13 tracks or more:
(Reasonable Doubt, Ready 2 Die,Slim Shady LP, Its Dark & Hell Is Hot, Southerplayalisticadillacmuzik, etc.)
So b/c of that I feel We cant say its the greatest…but its Top 3 Albums ever
and thats false…I heard Jay rap slow b4 Illmatic just like I heard em rap fast after Illmatic
thats a wack statement to say nas made him change his flow
if anything it proves how versatile jay raps…how many fast raps u heard from nas? less than 10 verses?
i dont have a favorite…im just a hip hop head…but yall hate on jay 4 no reason wen he did more than any average rapper
BEST HIPHOP ALBUM EVER BAR NONE
NAS ORIGINALLY PLANNED TO HAVE MORE THAN 9 TRACKS, BUT BECAUSE OF HEAVY STREET DEMAND AND THE RISK OF THE WHOLE ALBUM BOOTLEGGED, IT WAS RELEASED EARLY WITH ONLY 9 SONGS.
GOD WORKS IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS.
fOR AN ALBUM WITH JUST 9 SONGS, HOW AMAZING IS IT THAT IT HAS HAD THE IMPACT IT HAS? GOES TO SHOW HOW MANY MIND BLOWING LINES NAS CRAMMED INTO THAT SHORT SPACE OF 9 SONGS
NOT ONE CORNY LINE
NOT ONE OUT OF PLACE WORD
NOT ONE WEAK METAPHOR
NOT ONE WEAK BEAT
I GUESS GREAT THINGS DO COME IN SMALL PACKAGES
MUSICAL PERFECTION
THE ONLY THING THAT MAKES ME SAD ABOUT ILLMATIC IS THAT IT IS VERY LIKELY THAT I WILL NEVER HEAR ANOTHER HIPHOP ALBUM LIKE THAT EVER
GOD, I HOPE IM WRONG
Cosign#95 …People you do know , you can like both nas and jay , you don’t have to dislike one to like the other, i see this all the time on here, matter of fact, it’s like this on any hiphop/rap blog site …whenever it’s something about jay-z being mentioned ..you’ll have a lot of positive comments about him and a lot of negative ones about nas and vice versa ..when neither one has nothing to do ..with the story or video ..thats being posted, yeah jay’s bitch made ..lol , but as a artist you gotta respect his music ..he’s dope and so is nas ..why can’t you respect both of them ..instead of always picking sides.
we got bats for bitches and gats for snitches right mickie?
You have to remember that some of the people, like noelle, were born in the late ’90′s. Therefore, alot of them have no idea what the feeling of that album is all about. Nas’ Illmatic is the greatest hip-hop album ever created.
illmatic is the greatest hip-hop album ever and NaS is the greatest hip-hop artist of all time DEAD OR ALIVE
NAS IS GOAT!!!1
I don’t give a FLUGGG if I’m the one hundreth and whateva post…
ILLMATIC is the GREATEST hip hop album EVER.
It was perfect from end to end.
Never before had a rapper put together an allstar team of producers. EVERYBODY does it today.
Two words…5 MICS!!!
the reason that Illmatic is the best hip hop album of all time and one of the best musical creations of all time–if aliens came to this planet at asked for one representation of what hip-hop was, I would just have them listen to illmatic. thats real talk.
Real Talk, RD cant be better than Illmatic when u sampling niggas voice
Nas > Jay-Z no matter what & thats not knocking Hov
The resulting Nastradamus album has therefore been almost unanimously regarded as Nas’ worst LP, receiving his weakest ratings from many publications such as Allmusic and The Source. However, despite the criticism levelled at the album it still managed to receive a double platinum certification by the RIAA
“I got this locked since 91, I am the truest, name a rapper that I aint influence…” NAS = GOAT. it used to be Rakim for me but Nas got that now based on longevity.
jelouse down its da best including nas his da only rapper who bought poetry into hip hop lets be hounest plzzzz
