Rakim Speaks On Hip Hop Respect & Maturity
Rakim speaks on the old school respecting the new artist out and mature Hip Hop for older fans of the culture. I see Jay-Z’s change in content and style along with songs like, “30 something,” as him maturing along with his fan base. Some people hate the change but like Jay-Z says, “niggas want my old shit, buy my old album.”
Do you see yourself listening to rap your whole life?
Rakim’s new album, “The Seventh Seal,” will be on sale soon.
Produced By Nigel D.

Co sign Rakim.
Is all about progression. Why do you think when someone hasn’t seen you in years, they ask you “WOW, kid what have you been up to?” the last thing you wanna tell them is you’re up to the same shit you was 10 years ago, when you and him used to chill in the steps, holla @ shorties back when ya’ll were 15…smh.

Been listening to Hop Hop since 1986, that is soon to be 24 years and I still love Hip Hop from Lil Wayne to Jay Z to Kid Cudi to Kanye to Nas to Rae.
I will probably listen to Hip Hop as long it is around and I will allways love new school.
There is no such thing as being to old listening to Hip Hop. I even still make beats.
Peace.

October 26th, 2009 at 11:29 am
I’m 32 & yeah I’ll listen to rap as long as I can tolerate the music & the content. Some rap will never be for everybody. I talk to kids everyday & some of them never even liked Soljaboy. To each his own.

I will always listen to rap but maybe when i get older more R&B. The old heads from the 60’s and 70’s and before are still listening to and buying the beatels albums, acdc, u2, ect cus they are apart of that culture.

October 26th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
hes about 41 now… looks young for his age!!! but, rakim always spit that true shit, whether on the mic or interview…
October 26th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
hip hop is like the mob. young cats be lookin up to people like John Gotti and Carlo Gambino. race doesn’t matter. the streets and hip hop are synonymous. it’s like the best mc is the don of new york etc like that man in the suit. only difference is the kids all respect the mob cats but not everybody gives the proper respect to the Jay-Z’s Nas’s Rakim’s Kool G Rap’s Kane’s Slick Rick’s KRS’s. that’s the damn shame.

Im only 17 and i guess im down with the old folks i listen to old hip hop and new real hip hop not that mtv commercial ring tone music.
October 26th, 2009 at 6:38 pm
I dunno I grew up on hip hop but been listening to it less and less… I don’t think I’ll be listening to new hip hop wen I’m 40 lol… I just wish east cost niggas would release more material and also realize they gotta do more fun tracks…. I love Jadakiss but his last album wasn’t versatile… Can’t Stop Me was my fave track and then Who’s Real… but the album wasn’t balanced like that. Too much serious shit that makes you wanna give up on life. Now Jay’s album had it all IMO songs that made you wanna progress [What They Talkn Bout, So Ambitious], songs that had a different type of spitting [Venus vs. Mars], an anthem [Empire State Of Mind], hard street spitting [Reminder, On To The Next One] etc…
Regardless, Jada, Fab, Jay and them only release albums like once every 3 years so it’s like….

Always listened to hip hop, always will. You gotta understand that this is our culture, so we have to cherish it. Idc if jay, Nas, Raekwon, Ghostface etc turn 50 years of age and still rap. Once they spitting dat fire and actually have some substance in the music, i’m going to listen to it until my casket drops.

Firstly you need to understand the “too old” thing is really just an insult some dudes came up with to get at somebody, usually Jay-Z. When you really think about it, its stupid to say somethjing like that b/c what you’re saying is the culture you yourself are apart of is immature. Like its something a grown man cant be a part of. Also, some of the dudes saying it are only 6 or 7 years younger anyway so whats the big deal?

Oh and nuff respect to the Fiend of the Microphone. Been a fan since ‘86.

RTNY you always have some good questions
im 26 now ive been listening to hip hop for approx 13 years now….and its well alive
unfortunately their some new school cats that, well , make garbage music in my opinion…….but there will always be good quality hip hop… and to answer RTNY’s question, until there is good content YES I WILL KEEP LITENING TO IT
but like most of you aggree with Rakim, so do I ….. the hip hop that i can not and will not listen to, not because IM HATIN but just because i have no tolerance for anymore is hip hop that speak about constantly and ONLY about bitches and drugs……im bout to have a kid of my own and i cant see him bumpin his head to “flippin bricks” or “movin wihte” and shit like that
honestly speakin i can now understand why my parents weren’t too crazy about the content
maybe im just getting old ….lol
some might call it haiting…call it what you want …. but i started to listen to this shit during its “golden area” and i just cant understand whats so special about soulja boy or wokka flokka or whatever his name is …and GUCCI …wtf ???? do ppl really think gucci is good ??? no but honestly ???do ppl listen to that shit and say “ya he’s right, maybe i should approach the situation like this….or damn that was some insperational shit” …… ?? maybe i guess im just hatin’
anyway, RTNY just wanted to say you always come out w/ good questions to make ppl think…keep it up !!

The fans need to have more respect for the old school … that’s where it starts. I’m not the biggest Jay fan but the whole “he’s old” talk is plain stupid.

lets be real, Tupac would be 38, BIG would be 37. BigL would be 35, Big Pun would be 38.
You think people would be talking shit about age to these guys?
Its just hating because some people think in order to represent their set they have to be on the attack, or like DOA put the autotuners on the defensive and they got real sensitive.
The reality is hip hop has always been for grown men, it didn’t become designed for younger audiences until mtv proved it was a profitable demographic.

People need to understand that Hip Hop is a culture and not a trend or a fab. Big up to RTNY for putting out some knowledge.
