Thank you RealTalkNY for bringing this up!
To me, both represent character archetypes for hip-hop:
Spike Lee’s the old veteran whose done quite a few classics and still consistently produces quality work (Rakim, KRS-One, Wu-Tang)
Tyler Perry’s the newcomer MC who’s the icon of the new era, but pales in comparison to the older one (Weezy, TI, Jeezy, etc.)
How should we settle this? Answer: let the Wayans brothers make a parody film based off TP’s work (I’m Gonna Git You Sucka was their “blaxploitation” spoof, Don’t be a Menace to South Central while Drinking your Juice in the Hood was their “street coming of age” spoof)

her hari blond but when i come on computer it black
October 25th, 2009 at 8:08 am
He disses Clint Eastwood for no apparent reason now it’s Tyler Perry!
Spike Lee has this pretentious holier-than-thou attitude that I’ve always hated and it shows in all his movies. The only Spike Lee movie I’ve ever liked is Inside Man.
FUCK SPIKE LEE!!
October 25th, 2009 at 8:12 am
Honestly Tyler is giving many African American and latino actors/actress jobs that white America isnt… Yes Madea & Mr. Brown might be stereotypes but his movies do always end up being about self love, growth, respecting each other, family and knowing that with god we can accomplish more..I mean look @ why did i get married there was No Madea but he managed to have all black actors play, Lawyers, successful entrepreneurs, college professors and doctors..How many other film companies and producers show ish like that?? None, hell not even spike lee lol

I LOVE ME SOME SPIKE!!! LAWD KNOWS I DO!!! Bt Perry has a point- although I don’t like any of his screenplays or movies. The bottom line is… that’s Spike’s opinion- and we all know what they say about those…
October 25th, 2009 at 9:11 am
His movies are very 1-dimensional. Half the scenarios he has set up on his show, I hate never been aware of. But, his movies are good! People like them..urban America likes it
October 25th, 2009 at 9:13 am
kdubfrmCali, as ignorant as you sound?? But yeah, the storylines he has setup?? People will never see advancement..
October 25th, 2009 at 9:30 am
Oh, but I like how he can play every character and..we still don’t know him! And I like how he incorporates only African-American, domestic issues.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:31 am
first off stop generalizing black people, just like whites, asians, and every other race we’re all insividuals, second that’s spike lee’s opinion he shouldn’t say that in public he just comes off looking jealous and retarded, nobody pays spike lee to critique anyone let alone tyler perry, just shut your roach faced ass up and make movies
October 25th, 2009 at 9:32 am
I mean, it ain’t only black people that deal with these day to days situations, but white America loves to downplay their situations and STILL come out on top! Just watch Maury!
October 25th, 2009 at 9:43 am
Tyler Perry Shit is Trash!! Garbage, his stuff only funny to the black who actually watch shitty ass BET!!
October 25th, 2009 at 9:58 am
HEY! He’s on TNT, too!!
October 25th, 2009 at 10:06 am
Spike is right. Its not about Spike hating on Tyler Perrys work. Granted, in his long career, Spikes only real big blockbuster movie has been Inside Man, all of his work has been respected. I think Burmy hit the nail on the head. Spike Lee has been releasing powerful, informed and well documented stories of the black community for yeaaaaaaaaaaars and rarely gets the recognition that he deserves for it. Then here comes Tyler Perry with these loud and obnoxious characters that people are going crazy over. It might be safe to say that today in America, Tyler Perry might have a bigger audience than Spike Lee if you beleive the motto “men lie, number dont”. Its a sad and harsh reality.
I guess all I can say is that the south has been waiting a long time for a black director to come along and represent their emotions, environment, and culture. A vast majority of Spikes movies are based in New York. Spike and Perry represent two dynamics in black culture and history in the US. North versus the South. Mentally, I think alot of black people in the north who havent been deeply exposed to southern culture, will feel like Tylers work represents coonery and is embarassing. And southern black folk might see Spike Lee as a hatin’ ass uppity ni**a. It is what it is.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:14 am
SPIKE LEE IS ALWAYS RIGHT! FUCK TYLER PERRY..
October 25th, 2009 at 10:18 am
@ abg you are right because we are all indivuals. It has been proven over and over again that is no difference between MAN, only the pigment and that can easily be changed when you got a mixed couple with a child.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:51 am
The Madea plays were funny as hell…but Spike’s right. I for one was never a big fan of Black men having to cross dress and I’m a fan of Martin, Jaime Foxx, Wesley and the Wayans. Something about it doesnt sit right with me.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:24 am
of course spike is right. coon azz perry running around in drag humiliating black ppl especially black women with his madea faggotry. burn in hell perry… fyahh burn
October 25th, 2009 at 11:28 am
Sorry Tyler, you need to take a hard look at the images of yesteryear and those of your characters. I totally agree with Spike. I’m no fan of Tyler Perry, not at all. His movies are very predictable, the characters are one dimensional, the writing seems very amateur and it lacks depth. The only thing about his work I can appreciate is the fact that his productions give unknown Black actors a chance to make a name for themselves. I just wish that Spike and other Black film makers would produce more films that had blockbuster potential.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:45 am
You wanna talk stereotypes…then don’t look further than hiphopmusic and videos. You’d think every black american man is a baggy jeans wearing ghetto pimp who prefer being in the street then going to school and black women are a bunch of hoes who’s main focus is about having a big booty and being freaky like a pornstar.

October 25th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
I like some of Spike Lee’s movies, but he’s wrong on this one. Tyler is doing a good job
October 25th, 2009 at 12:36 pm
Spike Lee is wrong on this one. Tyler Perry is doing a good job! Maybe spike should collab with him instead of bashing him???
October 25th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
Tyler Perry’s movies are played out. They have the same plot every time. Women gets done wrong, rebounds, and then the person that did them wrong ends up having their life basically ruined. Throw in Tyler Perry running around in a wig and a dress and a few jokes and you have a typical Tyler Perry movie. Where is the variety in his work?
October 25th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
Spike Lee is a slimmed down Al Sharpton.
October 25th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
I really hope Spike’s comments were made in the heat of the moment and were taken way out of context. Becuase Tyler Perry is not an ellite film school graduate. He’s an average everyday person with humble beginings who stumbled on into his success. All of his movies have great messages and are not intended to exploit blacks. Tyler is still an amateur who has a lot of growing to do. I’m very proud and happy that he is choosing to use his mega success to provide opportunities for a bunch of black actors who would otherwise be unemployed. Spike should also be proud of all of Tyler’s behind scenes progress. Perry is one of the only blacks in hollywood who could put out a movie a year and not have to find the money somewhere or find a studio to do it because he has his own. It’s fucked up that Spike would ignore the bigger picture and go for homeboy’s gut like that.
October 25th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
I challenge Spike to give us something as equally entertaining as Perry’s film with the sophistication that he feels Perry’s movies are missing. Until he can do that I’ll just file him under bitter egomaniac.
October 25th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
it is Coonery he uses alot of stereotypes he act lik theres no happy times and black women are always pissed and unhappy
his movies suck they lost soul the day he got rich and went 2 the big screen his plays were more entertaining than these dry ass soap operas
October 25th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
I think it’s funny how everyone wants to be “blacker” since Obama is in office. Why spike start his negative comment off by stating “we have a black president”. For both of them Spike and Tyler….if we should be moving forward then why are people throwing cheap shots aka attention getters out. If you don’t like it don’t watch, simple. Tyler has done movies without Madea. Both guys are positive to their own right, but swearing and cursing about either one is not positive, we have a black president now we’re only moving backwards with this
October 25th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
OK I think Spike is being WAY too critical… sure Tyler’s movies are cheesy and predictable but like that other dude said, the bottom lines of the movies are black love and unity, dont get abused by anybody, raise your kids correctly etc. ALL GREAT MESSAGES. I’m not even black lol but Perry sends out good messages even if he may have annoying/stereotypical character/s in his movies. I like some Lee work and some Tyler work…. shit Spike, not everything has to be so serious all the time. Perry tries to instill good messages while trying to make people laugh at the same time. Stop hating lol
October 25th, 2009 at 4:11 pm
PS – Spike has some questionable movies aswell… look @ the plot of “She Hate Me”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/She_Hate_Me
Tell me that aint buffoonery??
October 25th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
You’re a loser Noelle, get off this site.
October 25th, 2009 at 4:38 pm
SPIKE IS THE BIGGEST HATER. HATES EVEN ON THE PEOPLE WHOS REPRESENTED BY WHO REPRESENTS HIM…TYLER, KEEP DOING YOUR THING
October 25th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
EVER THINK THAT IF YOU LIKE PERRYS FILMS U MIGHT JUST BE A COON TOO?
October 25th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
#14 you said urban america likes Ty Perry’s movies and Screenplay…you shouldnt generalize.
I thought I was the only one that thought this way. I told people the same thing that spike lee said about ty Perry’s movie…not quite coonery but like ……..stereotypical. Granted, “Why Did I Get Married”, “Daddy’s little Girl” was a decent/good movies….but those Madea movies are NOT funny…and I’m black and from the an urban environment.
Too me its seems like his movie is too too scripted. Like movies suppose to seem like real life…and they dont.
I dont even want to get on the tv siticoms…..Absolutely horrible….I watch meet the browns for like 10 minutes and i have NEVER EVER watched it again.
October 25th, 2009 at 6:00 pm
TRUTH HURTS..BUT I SEE BOTH POINTS SO THEY EVEN…WTFDIJS?
October 26th, 2009 at 1:21 pm
i feel spike lee because this dude is making money off of black stereotypes but i not only blame him its these actors who actually agree to these roles medea is basically a modern day mammy and most of the sitcoms make us look uneducated and simple minded. I will say why did i get married was a pretty good film. To people who say spike lee is a hater what if a white director made these films? I bet it everyone would protest to get them out of the theater so its funny when we makes fun of ourselves but its not cool when others do it
October 26th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
Co sign #29….
I’m sorry but Spike’s right. This clown has made great business moves…but as far as his quality of work, it is coonery. Sorry to those that like his stuff.
October 26th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
Tyler Perry…his such a Jack Ass…
October 26th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
Tyler Perry…he’s such a Jack Ass…
October 26th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
awe. cant we all get alone lol.. i like perry movies. spike movies are racist also. always about black and white now getting alone. never got into his movies. tyler has comedy and real life stuff that black people goes through each day. i laugh , i cry . life is too short and tyler know where his bed and butter coming from. spike and him should do a movies together and stop hating your own race of people. its a shame ..
October 26th, 2009 at 5:24 pm
I’ve never been a big fan of Tyler Perry…
However…having said that…
Spike Lee needs to STFU.
100.
October 27th, 2009 at 12:41 pm
Spike should really get over himself, I enjoy his work but it they haven’t been the most uplifting works of genius! Clockers, really???!!! There was a good post on http://spatterblog.com/ about Spike Lee’s sillyness and i agree..
October 27th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
Spike’s comments do appear to be bias. If you reflect back on some of his earlier movies they could be called coonery. He wasn’t complaining about coonery when he was making those type of films. It is ironic that now TP is making some films that are grossing and netting more money that Spike’s films he makes these comments. It is like one of the comments posted, if you don’t like or want to see a TP movie then don’t. That’s your right! But don’t demean TP or those that do. Be happy and positive for any black person that is making and honest living and is helping others to do so.
