Listen, I understand your point and logic don’t get me wrong but Jay competed at the same time BIG was alive.
Lets go back to 92 – 97 when lyrics actually meant a little something. Jay was nice as fuck on Reasonable Doubt but he was still in BIG’s shadow, he couldn’t compare when most think that was Jay at his nicest. BIG had more talent, presence, and pull than any rapper in NY. Now if Jay wasn’t as nice as BIG when they were both around at the same time, why is he nicer now??

Jay is the greatest of this generation but I won’t go any further than that. The argument of whether B.IG. or Pac were still alive is valid, but its not Jay’s fault they got shot down in their primes. He did take advantage of that void and did a good job of filling that void. He’s in my top but he is far behind 2pac and B.I.G because their catalog of music no matter how little it is shits on Jay’s catalog of music.

Jay-Z’s career personifies the legendary greatness of an ideal MC. He’s absolutely the greatest lyricist to ever walk the earth. The G.O.A.T. no doubt. The Mike Jordan, Muhammad Ali, of rap hands down. Jay is doing things that Pac and Biggie never could. Very few have his combination of lyrical ability, marketability, longevity and consistency. Great rappers make it look easy. To be considered great, a rapper must master all these skills. By doing that creatively, rappers set themselves apart. If you look at all the greatest rappers ever, Jigga has been the best. He never dropped a bad album. No other rapper has more classic albums than him. You can’t compare the past (90s on down) to the present. Technology and the music industry itself has evolved from then. Like Pain said post Pac and Bigge Jay is the greatest, but when they was alive Jay was in their shadow. If you put Jay, Pac, Biggie, Em, and Nas on the same track or compare the best verses in their respected careers Jay gets BODIED end of story. stats wise jay really is NOT the best rapper…14 albums and 30 million sold, thats an average of 2 million sales per album. considering all the press and idolizing of jay, u’d think he would of turned that 2 million per album to about 3-4 million at the least. his two biggest albums vol.2 sold 5 million cuz that annie song, and the black album sold 5 million too cuz we thought he was retiring. jay is not a wack rapper by no means and his business ventures have all been great, but for him to sit there and talk stats, they dont really add up to him being the best…just my opinion though. not to mention jay was only able to sustain his status off the back of kanye’s beats…and when its all said and done kanye will be an icon while jay will be a legend. plus think of the grimey shit he did to dame, waering reeboks instead of pro-ked when u and man own the company

If you really look at it objectively, it is very hard to say Jay’s NOT the best. Anybody you put up against him is sorely lacking in some area.
I love Biggie just as much as anybody, but when you talking all time greatest, you almost can’t even consider him with just two albums.
The absolute hardest goal to achieve in not just hip hop, but music period, is LONGEVITY. 13 years since his first release and Jay-Z is still VERY RELEVANT in the game. When he drops an album its still a BIG DEAL.

For those calling him average back in 96 because he didn’t go plat. Look at the circumstances: 1. East/West battle 2. “Hit Em Up” 3. Fugees 4. Wu-Tang 5. Bad Boy as a whole 6. Nas -It was Written(following a classic). POINT being Jay-Z was 1 man being released against all that^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Easy to be overlooked, but wonder why Pac took notice even though he underrated him.
When DMX dropped 2 plat albums same year as Vol. 2 Hard Knock Jay still prevailed. Plus the fact he always spoke it from day 1, he said he’d be great and he is.
