First off all 2Pac is still the greatest rapper. His rhymes life and catalog are phenomenal. Jay-Z is next only because his life and achievements are as outstanding as his songs. Eminem is real close because he’s maturing and regardless off his music, caricatures or whatever, He’s dope. And He never put some weak lyrics out. Jay had a few WTFs in there. For the life of me I cant understand why Kingdom Come* was rated as an average album until I listened to it again. The conclusion is even with some of the best production I’ve ever heard Jay’s lyrics were unremarkable and mediocre at best. As for the Renegade reference, I thought Jay came kinda hard in the 1st verse and got lazy in the 2nd and started talking the usual B.S. about hustling whereas Em talked about being despised by parents and critics with a flow that rides the beat, throughout. Eminem And Jay Are Two TOTALLY different styles… Eminem first singles are always meant to joke and cause a buzz…. When needed to Em could off and spit some of the realest shit. What Irv is saying doesn’t make any sense.

Now, let’s get this straight, I like Jay-Z more than Eminem. That’s a fact. But the two artists are very neck-and-neck when it comes to lyricism and performance. Jay has a better track record with more classics to his name but Eminem is a far superior entertainer (which is evidenced in his album sales).

Anyways, this is the part of Irv’s comments that fails to use any sense of logic. Towards the end of the tape, he claims that Em can do Jay-Z’s song and it would still be hot yet it wouldn’t work vice versa and that makes Jay a better artist…wtf? Can no one see the logical fallacy here?…

Here’s a hint: Because Em can do something that Jay can’t…Jay-Z is better. If anything, that statement points Em out to be more versatile than Jay thus being superior; not the other way around.

Now, like I said before, I tend to think Jay-Z is the better of the two yet Irv’s argument is completely out of line. The only reason why Jay is a better artist is because he knows how to come out with complete and full albums. Eminem drops better single songs but, as evidenced in Encore, he struggles to remain relevant for the length on an entire album; relying on shock value to the keep the audience interested. Jay is simply more consistent than Em; not necessarily better. The best Em verses are easily just as strong or even better than the best Jay verses. It’s just there’s far more strong Jay verses than there are Em’s. End of story.

I think in this interview Irv actually proved the opposite. The last things that he says is that only Em can perform that clown shit, but he could perform another style and it would be just as good. And yet he says that Jay wouldn’t be able to… So his point is that the rapper who is pigeonholed in one style is better? How does that make sense? One of the main things that makes Em so good is that he is extremely versatile. Regardless of whether or not his song is goofy or serious, they are always brilliant. And then for Irv to bring up someone’s personal background is for show. Not ALL of NY is harder then ALL of Detroit. And this point is irrelevant. I think he’s right but his argument is flawed. Forget all that gun-talk, Em murdered Jay on ‘Renegade’–>their only real head-to-head comparison (though this result can be seen as subjective as well).
Eminem and Jay are both very witty and have a complete mastery of their craft, however Jay gets the edge on consistency.
