Jay-Z: “The Day Obama Got Elected, The Gangsta Became Less Relevant.”

“Obama represents so much hope for blacks and Latinos. The hope he represents is bigger than any of the huge problems he could possibly correct,” he said. “When you have positive role models, you can change your life for the better. The day Obama got elected, the gangsta became less relevant.”

April 27th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
The gangsta in gangsta-rap? Never.
April 27th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
Agree, yet at the same time. wtf was everybody else doing the whole time while OBAMA was the one like i’m just gona do it.
it’s people who need to be inspired to do something or that they can something, then it’s others that WILL themselves to the dream/goal, regardless of what someone else does.
we just gota get out of this thinking. i remember watching BET after the announcement, & Jeff J, who is a cool educated dude. was like, black people, be at work on time, any excuse you may have had before about not being able to make it cause of the man or someone holdin you down is gone now.
REALLY, OBAMA didn’t care about that, like man they holding me down. he went about it & fought most of his life & got to the White House, with THE MINDSET LIKE ” I DON’T GIVE A FREAK WHAT ANYBODY ELSE DOES TO TRY & STOP ME. I’M THE ONE TAKING THE TEST, GOIN TO SCHOOL, DOIN THE RIGHT THINGS, MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICES, I’M GONA DECIDE IF I MAKE IT OR NOT BASED ON MY WILL TO GET IT DONE. PERIOD.
i’m all for positive role models tho. being gangsta ain’t about sh&t.
April 27th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
The gangsta been less irrelevant…it’s just that people like Jay-z, 50 Cent, T.I. Weezy, Jeezy and other dope dealing/gangsta rapping artists kept perpetuating the gangsta persona and then when Obama came on the scene they jumped on the band wagon…and tried to act all political and conscious! When you had artist like Nas, Common and other artists who been speaking on political issue from the beginning of their careers. But Jay-z and 50 Cents tried to diss Nas by talking about how Nas reads too much and is too conscious and how every since they sold 5 million albums they haven’t rapped like Common Sense! Jeezy talking about how Nas isn’t gangsta and don’t bust his guns. Now all of a sudden it isn’t cool being gangster no more! These commercial artists like Jay-z, Weezy, Jeezy, 50 Cent ect are jokes and should not every be taking seriously! Now most of these gangsta rappers want Nas to be on their record! So whose fake and who is real and who just jumps on the train because they feel it’s the cool thing now…Obama on the scene so rappers want to be political! That is why I respect artist who are true!
April 27th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
THIS STATEMENT IS REDICULOUS ESPECIALY COMING FROM A RAPER, OBAMA , YES HE IS A ROLE MODEL AND AN EXAMPLE BUT, THAT MIND SET IS SUPPOSED TO BE THAT WAY REGUARDLESS OF HIS PRESIDENCY. JAY WASN’T TALKING ABOUT THIS EVEN 2 YEARS AGO, AT THIS POINT IT’S TO LATE FOR HIM TO PLAY THAT IM RIGHT AND THEY WRONG ROLE, HIS LYRICS PROMOTED VIOLENCE .
April 27th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
@ #4 I couldn’t agree more!
April 27th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
#4, When did Jeezy chirp Nas?
April 27th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
Jay should be more specific. He’s talking about blacks from the hood who thinks the gangsta image is cool. It’s not like middle class black folks embrace the thug life and thinking about street cred, being gangsta going to prison…etc. But if Obama is a wakeup call to the hood niggas then all cred to him.

Jay-z been saying some real qustionable things lately! He talked all that shit about Nas and said something about Common in one of his rhymes and now all of a sudden because Obama is a huge political figure and Jay wants be seen in the Obama light. Now jay wants to come off as some smart political and conscious artist! Jay-z is a dick riding faggot and loves capitalizing off of others attention!

To answer your question # 6 Jeezy went at Nas in 2006! When Nas made the album Hip Hop Is Dead! Jeezy was on the radio going off on Nas because the radio host was agreeing with Nas and Jeezy got upset! these same niggas that try clowning Nas always end up trying to be his friend…becaue they no he is the truth and he humble!
April 27th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
i live in a middle classs neighborhood….right next to the hood so theres alot of blacks and latinos….and let me tell u some people have grown out of that gangsta image but alot of them have not….so for the one who said middle class don’t act like that ur mistakin middle class “thugs” are out there but there just faker and cornier but while portraying the same image
April 27th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
@GANGSA BEEN DEAD
“If skills sold, truth be told, I’d probably be lyrically Talib Kweli/Truthfully I want to rhyme like Common Sense/But I did five mil, I ain’t been rhyming like Common since.”
THAT IS WHAT JAY Z SAID…HE WAS NOT DISSN HIM..
April 27th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
Jay-z been a dick rider…him trying to gain attention off Obama is what he has always done thoughout his career! If a artist is hot he jumps on their dick! Wayne, Jeezy, kanye, Rick Ross ect. He does the same thing with producers! there is no doubt he told Timbereland he wanted him to produce his entire BP3 album but when kanye started gaining attention for his beats on 808 Jay-z jumped on his dck…and to think Jay did not even consider Kanye to have a valid career in hip hop outside of being a producer!

on another note that gangsta shit always has been corny but it def is gettin more played out by the day….but if that’s how some hood niggas feel then so be it if they wanna hop on the obama train we will all see who was real from day 1 and who was just folllowing trends!!!!
April 27th, 2009 at 1:54 pm
#14…So basically Jay-z was all about the bullshit and IMO he was dissing Common and Talib! Yes, he acknowledged their skills but he slapped them in the face by basically saying your shit won’t sale because your to conscious and not gangsta or commercial enough! We all know gangsta and commercial go hand in hand! Why do you think 50 was so successful because he was a gangsta/commercial rapper! Why do you think American Gangster was perceived to be a better album than Kingdom Come because it was gangsta!
April 27th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
@ 4 & 10
you guys don’t know the meaning of the story about gangsta hiphop, you have the story backwards do some research again before you speak
April 27th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
Jay was basically saying that he wishes he could make $$ and rhyme like Talib or Common but the public was not buying that. That’s showing what we are really on. We, as consumers, wont buy the conscience, get yourself together and stop calling our women bithces, stop selling dope give hope and stop killing each other music. We as a culture(American) are fascinated with the gangsta image. SEX, MONEY, and MURDER sells. Fact. We are the problem. And I am not immune in some cases myself. I like good music but sometimes the s*hit goes overboard. I’m to the point now where I dont even really like to listen that much anymore. Everybody’s a killa, drug dealer, pimp, OG. I’m tired of that. Where is the originality? Turn on a song, 1st thing u hear is…”i’ll kill you….I got guns….My crew is the realest…..where the haters at….i got hoez…i’m pimping..do some gay ass dance…” WTF!!
April 27th, 2009 at 1:58 pm

April 27th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
Its true, Obama is the biggest person in the entire world. Kids look up to him more than the dope man. It wasnt always like that. Its dudes who wanted to be like the D-Boy up the block more than they wanted to be like Jordan or Kobe or Jay-z ect.
April 27th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
i thought rap was supposed to be entertainin gangsta rap tells an interesting story isnt that y we listen. I live in a county called spotsylvania the place is just like the name suburbia with random farms these kids really do want to be gangsta and it has a little to do with music but more to do with 30 somethin year old peices of shit that scoop them up under their wing by giving them weed that they dont even smoke.
Jay says the dumbest things like people really look up to him, they dont like him the person they like his money and his legend nothing more.
April 27th, 2009 at 2:15 pm
#andres
I’m talking about in general. There will always be exception to the rule. The gangsta image is not something that most of us from the middle class are down with. However it’s very common among people from the hood and those are the ones that Jay target in this article.
April 27th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
@ piggy ross
That has always been the case….That voice just gets drowned out by ignorance…seems like there is more of that ignorant activity getting played than some positive black music. I like them both to be honest because they are both forms of expression but the powers that control what we hear mostly put their money behind that gangsta music cuz that is what they wanted us to be on. If you start telling poor folks that they can get an education, change the world, that their women are strong and powerful, and they are hearing this on an everyday basis….y we just might stand up and be somebody…They cant have that.

April 27th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
# 17 Gangsta rap is a genre of hip hop that reflects the violent of some inner-city youths lifestyles (drug dealing, disrespectful behavior towards woman, guns and gang affiliation ect.). Jay, 50, T.I., Jeezy, Weezy, and Rick Ross all capitalize off of this genre of hip hop…of course N.W.A and Ice-T created the hardcore sound in the 80’s. But the artist I mentioned above also perpetuated the sound, popularized it and the industry made it more commercial for today’s youth to listen! So of course now sense Obama is in office, everyone has a conscious now and they want their music to have substance! When other artist like Nas been representing substance throughout his career! More importantly hip hop has become a joke…because these commercial artists are followers…while the real artists set the trends!! But you buyers of hip hop will be quick to say the real artists fell off…because their music don’t have a catchy beat, they not talking about how much dope they sold 15 years ago..if they not lying about it, how many guns they bust or how they fucking all these bitches! So I do know what gangsta rap is…and I also know that gangsta rap comes in different forms…it just has more of a commercial sound to it now…but whatever way you like it…the sound is played out! It’s time for real lyricist to step to the forefront of this music called hip hop… and bring back the substance! Hip hop music needs to redirect the youth! OBAMA SHOULD NOT HAVE TO BE IN OFFICE FOR AN ARTIST TO DISMISS GANGSTA RAP…and want to bring more substance to their music!
April 27th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
I think Jay was simply implying that since Obama became the pres, young boys in the hood don’t look up to to rappers as role models which is a great thing.
We need more educated young black men instead of felons.
Word up
April 27th, 2009 at 3:10 pm
@#17 Ice-T and Ice Cube also was being rebellious against what was truly going on in their neighborhoods in LA (police brutality ect.)…I call it the Ronald Reagan Affect! So I can understand their plight! But these artists today are doing it because they know that today’s youth have low attention spans…like 50 would say and that they love the gangsta mentality and also these artists sale millions of albums just by mentioning drugs, disrespecting woman and gang affiliations whether they truly live the life style or not!
April 27th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
gangsta shit is only boring wen it is represented by someone who isn’t gangsta.
April 27th, 2009 at 3:22 pm
Guys, don’t get SO emotional on this board. What JAY-Z said make a LOT of sense. Essentially, he is not dumbing down to his audience. His core message is to a global audience. AND get this…it includes more than rap and hip-hop. To enlighten this BOARD for DUMMIES, the glorified gangsta in hip-hop is becoming less important and people’s perception of people of color should change for the better as a result of President Barack Obama’s election. Just as Jay-Z and others were inspirations to millions, both black and white, wouldn’t it be logical to assume President Obama inspires the same sensation? Believe me, this is not about Nas, 50, Common or anyone else in hip-hop. It’s about recognizing a once in a lifetime event that millions died for to inspire and take this nation in a direction never imaginable before.
April 27th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
I agree that the gangsta fad, faze, & phenomenon are over. But what isn’t over is the OVERWHELMING amount of self inflicted LOW SELF-ESTEEM in the black community. The generations before us passed down a spirit of self pitty and unworthiness that has a lot of thinking that we can’t do or be shit becuase we’re black and “they” won’t allow us. Its that low self-esteem that has discouraged our people and has a lot of us out here acting like fools, not giving a fuck, having kids and training the youth to act like fools. Obama can only be a living example of what self-love, education, and responsibility can do for you. But its up to parents and us as individuals to instill the basic traits of self-respect and high self-esteem into our kids so that they grow up knowing that they can do and be better.
April 27th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
@ #4 & everybody else who agrees wit him! First of all have yall ever heard of growning up & maturity! Hes not Nas, Common or Talib etc. But it just shows how much Barrack inspires ppl & I think J was inspired to do something just like everybody else; just like Puffy, Mary J, Beyonce myself etc….. If you wasnt inpired by this (GANGSTER OR NOT) then somethings wrong wit u not Jay Z! And yes he picked on Nas about being like a professor on the mic b/c nobody wants to hear that shit all the time period; thats why shit like that dont sell (u make music to sell records & make $). Who wants to hear shit like that in the club or at a cook out. Its cool to do it sometime but my nigga Nas be on that 90% of the time(& thats cool). So instead of dissing J yall should be giving him props for doing something positive fuck why U think he did it! & when he said “gangster” he wasnt just talkin bout gangster rap hes talking in the neighborhood gangster, movie gangster, & dead famous gangsters b/c young kids look up to the gangster lifestyle as a hole no matter if its fiction or nonfiction. Hopefully Barrack will change that thinking. Thats what J meant
April 27th, 2009 at 3:56 pm

gangsta been dead— you need to listen to entire verse, so here u go. YOUR WELCOME!
When your sense got that much in common
And you been hustlin since
Your inception
Fuck perception
Go with what makes sense
Since
I know what i’m up against
We as rappers must decide what’s most impor-tant
And i can’t help the poor if i’m one of them
So i got rich and gave back

I agree with # 4 and this is why:
You Jay-z dick riders are delusional…Jay-z is damn near 40 years old and he is just now talking about gangsta rap went out when Obama came into office! He is about the same age as Obama and just 2 years ago he released an album called the American Gangster…because he wanted to capitalize off the movie…the gangsta persona! Jay-z is a joke and he should of been realized this about gangsta rap way before Obama came into play!
April 27th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
@ HipHop&Depression *cough rick ross*…haha.
April 27th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
This is interesting. A lot of black people including myself have been trying to do better for ourselves way before Obama came onto the scene. I like President Obama but don’t try to attribute all the change to him when we as a race should have been trying to change way before Obama popped up. Gangsta has been dead but its rappers like Jay that keep the shit relevant. Don’t try to change just because we have a black president because your ass should have been trying to do better no matter what color our president is.

Just admit that Jay-z runs with whatever he thinks is the trendy thing to do or say! He is a dick rider and wants to be seen as Obama’s equal…but we all know he is not.

People give Obama too much credit. “The gangsta” started to decline after so many of our rap stars were murdered and/or arrested. Diddy stopped trying to be gangsta after his gun charge that resulted in the imprisonment of Shyne. Jay-Z stopped being gangsta after he secured enough money to position him as not only a music mogul, but an entertainment industry legend. And T.I. tried to hold onto to his gangsta until the judge said a year and a day. So what influence did Obama have on that? Honestly, I don’t see the connection Jigga. But I guess this si just another attempt to position Obama as the HNIC. I aint mad at ya

Its sickning how we put each other down. Jay z himself has helped change the rap game from a business prospective. I mean this man is on his way to a billy. Hes also 1 of the trend setters to this new sophisticated music; he made you put your jerseys up & put on a button up; & and take off them jeans & put on a suit.& yall talkin bout he just started gangster rap. LOL But lets get this right J’s not a gangster, hes a hustler. Have you ever heard of Reasonable Doubt? That entire album is about the streets & hustling. American Gangster was about the ups & downs of a hustler not glorifying being a gangster. Its just amazing how ignorant some of you are!

WAS THAT really that hard to understand??? Jay is right… does that make him an intellectual? no. Does it make him a sellout? nope.
You gotta remember that 1- when he spoke all that bullshit in records, he was young, it was relevant in his past life, AND it made him a boatload of money…. he grew out of it, he may go back to his gun talk once in a while cause like every grown man, we get moments when we miss the old crazy us.
But he is right, in general, being the wannabe thugs from the corner or suburbia, the rappers themselves or ppl in general– Barack is making being smarter cooler than being tough/rude/anti-unity/rebelious/gangsta whatever it is you may choose.

Think i’m lyin? Keep on living.
April 27th, 2009 at 7:16 pm
Unfortunately, listeners, #55 is the very clown Jay-Z and other positive people refer to as the proverbial idiot. How many of you actually read Cigar Afficianado? Its demographics are on a different level than most of us. For most of us who go to a store and are followed by someone as if we’re about to steal something or for us who peform and people expect the worse, Jay-Z just did a small favor by enlightening a demographic of people that may see us in a different light. Pres. Obama damned sure can’t do it by himself, but he sure helps dispelling ALOT of myths about us.
April 27th, 2009 at 7:28 pm
I didn’t know there were so many ignorant people on this board. Is that statement so hard to understand?
To quote him he said ” The day Obama got elected, the gangsta became less relevant.”
He didn’t say IRRELEVANT! He’s saying there’s now somebody for those who thought that there was nothing more for them out there than to become a rapper/singer or an athlete, out there to look up to. It’s cool to be smart, stay in school. ALOT of our youth don’t have positive role models in their lives to look up to, MOST grow up with no father figure in the home. This is just another option/road that you can take.
April 27th, 2009 at 7:30 pm
Jigga’s right! no not dick ridin anyone.. I simply get the point and agree
April 27th, 2009 at 7:38 pm
Yeah, it’d be great if everyone was self-motivated and didn’t need something like the first black president’s election to find inspiration to succeed in life. But sometimes it takes something huge (like Obama’s election) to inspire mass change. Not everyone has an intrinsic will and desire to succeed. It’d be great if we all were aspiring to do well in life before November 2 of last year, but how can you find fault in someone who finds inspiration to move from maybe doing something negative to something more positive from that event?
April 27th, 2009 at 8:01 pm
I’m my own inspiration! Obama is definitely someone that I admire though…but he has no bearings on what type of music I listen too! So therefore Jay-z’s statement makes no sense to me! A person’s choice in music should have nothing to do with OBAMA! So because we have a black President now all of sudden you can’t listen to gangsta music. I don’t see any of the rock legends ever saying:”Now that George Bush has been elected…hard core rock-n-roll is dead!” Do you actually think that because Jay-z made this statement in Aficionado magazine that the people who read this magazine will change their opinion if they even have one of African Americans…if Obama can’t change people’s negative behaviors or thoughts about blacks what makes you think a rapper like Jay-z can! This is why people need to inspire themselves and should come to their own conclusion about what is acceptable for them…not because some rapper like Jay decides to tell you what is cool or not cool anymore!
April 27th, 2009 at 8:13 pm
EVERTONE SHUT UP! Obama is gangster his damn self…he has to be in order to deal with the crisis in this country! Music has nothing to do with this…so we need to stop trying to analyze this statement and let’s go out in the world and make a change! Jay has not said anything profoud that is worth this many comments…people are just boed and want to vent! SO I SUGGEST WE AGREE TO DISAGREE…with what I have no idea!
April 27th, 2009 at 8:45 pm
Ok,I can see this will get me some hate, but here goes anyway.
The day Obama became president,is the day it became that much harder for a black man to win the presidency. Here’s why:
1)Obviously,from the historical point. It doesn’t matter if we have 100 more black presidents,Obama was first and there will never be a rally behind someone like there was for him.Blacks and whites together voted him in,some actually thought he was the right choice, most wanted to see history made.
2)This guy was not the right choice. Now before I get bashed for being racist,or extremist republican, let me explain.Yes,I am exited that I was alive to witness the first black man elected. However, there are other strong minded, smart, far more qualified black men(& women) who could have done this country much better.Sorry, but in the end, black and white will be extremely disappointed with Obama. That in turn, will make people not want to elect another black man.
Face it,when you get to the bottom of it,whites put him in office.Nothing racial about that, just facts. He is going to screw up this country worse than Bush did,or McCain could have done. And the next time a black man runs, whites are not going to vote simply because of what Obama has done(and will do).Whites are still the majority voters.
I thought McCain,Obama, & Clinton were all piss-poor choices. And I there are a lot of other people who think the same,so the person who “SEEMED” like the better choice was Obama.
April 27th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
disagree, love jay-z but thats just dumb
April 27th, 2009 at 9:42 pm
@64 this is not some political website.
Everything you said has nothing to do with what Jay said.
If you think Obama will be the worst president ever fine that is your opinion.
I don’t think people here will simply call you a racist for disagreeing with Obama because we all have our disagreements when it comes to his policies.

But he just cam ein office

Ok then, like an earlier poster stated,it shouldn’t take Obama getting elected to make them want to do better. But the point of my post is everyone is getting all full of hope, false hope.
And for the record, there are plenty of posts I read that have nothing to do with the topic,so I post as I please.

wow niggas is really tryin to bash jay because of this statement?
what he said is true, right
he didnt say he’s the one that made this happen. cant he point out what the CHILDREN of today will look up to hopefully? alot of todays young adults looked up to gangstas. hopefully now the younger generation should look up to obama. theres alot of kids out there with nothing to look up to. aside from what yall believe there are ppl out there that need a push
so why the fuck are yall niggas so mad 4?????
and for all yall niggas hollerin that nas shit, nas talked alot of dumb nigga gangsta shit too for a big part of his career. he played both sides

lol, county you know you’re biased here!
There have been plenty of successful people of color to look up to! Why is Obama the point of interest like there was never any other successful colored person before? IDK sometimes watchin people buy into hype is like watchin a 18 car pile up in slow mo with a soundtrack.

It’s about time somebody said that. The gangsta image is just hurting us all, it is doing us no good. It is time to reinvent ourselves and we should ostricize people who want to be gangsta instead of embracing that image.

The gangsta in gangsta-rap will never die!
I’m tired of these other rappers lookin down on gangsta-rap like their version of hip-hop is better.
A little advise: “concentrate on your own bullshit hip-hop and stay the fuck outta mine.”
I dont think Jay was going at G-rap though I think he meant kids have someone else besides their local gangstas to look up to.

Can’t walk with Jay on this one …….. The biggest gangstas are the government …… Obama is just another pawn in the game!

now that will INSTANTLY become a new famous obama-era quote like “no more excuses for black men, obamas in office”
