“The Whole East Coast Is Gang Banging Because Of Music”
The quote from the title is started at the 50 second mark. Basically the guy is saying a lot of people got started gang banging by seeing it glamorized in Hip Hop music. Do you agree or disagree? I think gangs have always been around, but the spread of Bloods and Crips to the East Coast may of been influenced by Hip Hop.

Bloods and Crips in NY does not have as much to do with Hip Hop as Hollywood. Movies like Boyz in the Hood, Colors, etc. had even more to do with it.

Hip Hop is a part of an artistic movement dating back to the 1920’s beat generation. Our ancestors alienated by slavery were able to have a sense of community through jazz clubs and music. Fast forwarding to 1970 something, still alienated by “planation capitalism”, black people needed a new sound to represent their struggles of being abandoned to the decaying inner city. Hip Hop was the result.
“Straight outta compton” is one the first gansta rap songs ever, I think, and a pretty damn frighteningly violent song. “Straight outta comton, crazy motha fucka named ice cube, from the gang called niggas with attitude. if i’m called off, i got a sawed off, squeeze the trigger and bodies are hauled off.”
It’s not about the brutality of those lyrics; the lyrics on paper are frightening. But what does Ice Cube say before the lines about being crazy and committing crimes? He is “coming straight outta Compton”. That is the first thing that he declares in the song, asserting himself as an extension of the city, and because he is an extension of the city, he in turn is a crazy motherfucker. It’s not about Ice Cube the individual anymore; it’s about Compton’s environment as a whole. For the rest of the song, the city of Compton becomes the collective voice, where the murder rate at the time was nearly SIX TIMES the national average at the time.
On paper, that fact is also frightening. It’s actually even more frightening, because that’s a real fact, and not song lyrics. Such is the main concept of the Rap movement.

first let me say Chicago been bangin so i want to exclude that city right off top…”The Whole East Coast Is Gang Banging Because Of Music” that statement is straight bullshit…i dont even understand the logic behind that statement…No HIP HOP is not to blame for dudes Gangbanging on the EAST COAST…listen up i can explain it all with one word “RELOCATION”…most of it started by G’z catching cases and couldnt live they life where they were notorious bangers and moved to the east coast influencing cats on gangbanging…and movies may have played a small part in it but not as much…thats the REALTALK…1 WAKE UPPPPP

I dont think hip hop cause east coast to bang, west coast niggaz think they so much more official like they started gangs before there was blood in ny there was the new york gang alliance, even then new york was known for its individuals, where a individual can have power, its like since new york bloods expanded and people elaborated more with new york, cali is jealous but its all b love, where the new york bloods at in this video, ya aint got nobody on the books….
rise and shine!

Yeah thats probably one of the dumbest statements made in a while . there’s bloods and crips in every major city in the united states even mexico ! they must never watch an episode of gangland on the history channel go sit down some where . they never seen the miseducation on Sonny Carson ! ( shot in brooklyn ) gangs been around way before hip-hop ! damn even leonardo dicaprio knows that ! haha Poverty is what spreads gangs . Hbo did a special in like 97 ! gang banging in lil rock arkansas !!!! remeber that ??? people hate the east coast so much , there so much animosity because NEW YORK is where this whole culture yal praise ! actually started !!! they never comment on bloods and crips anywhere else . but when there in Ny . theyre saying east coast but you know they trying to say NY ! they probably dont know what the word epidemic actually means ?

ok all these hip hop website owner and artist need to stop lying! hip hop does influence the streets not the other way around!!!! just look at africa! all the gangs and crimes and attitude of gang member is ALLL based on hiphop!!!!! theres a gang in south africa called the “americans” that base everything they do from hiphop!!!
February 18th, 2009 at 7:42 pm
first of all the prison system is more to blame than hip hop music…most of the kids i know who join crips or bloods (im from Jersey) join in jail because they are scared or want more respect…Everytime a lil guy goes in he comes back blooded up and more of a gangster than before they went in…If jail was actually used as a place that rehibilitates the youth and gives them direction i guaratee you gangs on the east coast would decrease in size and the amount of new members joining would drop substantially…Instead they let dudes sit around lifting weights, playin with fags, gang bang and deal drugs…Prison is like criminal college real talk….The prison system should be Obamas next project..

no.12 is a dumb ass…..Im African and whats going on in Africa has nothing to do with rap music…the continent of Africa has been in turmoil way before hip hop music even existed…It started at “The Berlin Conference”….this is where the European powers sat down at a table and carved up africa into the countries that are there today…Nigeria, ghana etc…this put different ethnic groups together that did not even speak the same language in some cases…to make a long story short this lead to power struggles and bloody wars that still go on to this day…The situation in Africa has nothing to do with rap music you sound ignorant even saying something like that…furthermore you said that gang in south Africa calls themselves the Americans not the rappers…America represents violence…the majority of the violence in the world, america has its nose in it somewhere…hip hop music is just a representation of america…Use your freakin brain for a second if they banned hip hop tomorrow the murder rate might go up not down….
February 18th, 2009 at 8:18 pm
im from queens and i feel how every real nigga feels about gangs in newyork!as for bloods and crips we as newyorkers need 2 quit dickriding, thats chicago and l.a shit.
February 18th, 2009 at 10:23 pm
you cant blame it on hip hop…. blame it on no jobs, poor education system in these major cities, & broken homes most ppl join gangs because they have no family.. thats just some of the things you can blame it on…..LEAVE HIP HOP ALONE
February 18th, 2009 at 11:11 pm
#12 sounds like a dickhead
and hiphop is not the reason gangbanging came to new york, niggas in nyc learned gangbanging from jail….
i cant believe noone else wrote that. gangbanging niggas from the west and chi was in lockup wit ny niggas the rest is history. jail culture spreads quicker than anything in this world. u want ur gang to pop off all over the country get it poppin in jail when them niggas come home they push niggas wigs back and followers will follow. ask any ms13 nigga u know jail is the claim to fame for any and every gang, if u gang aint a jailhouse gang then its pussy

Gangs been around for forever… the spread of Blood and crip titles was based more on life than music… like dude above said jail is the place most get put on and then there was the guys who were either on the run or were lookin to make more money or try to recruit more soldiers.
Where I’m from dudes in a particular part of town were claimin INTERNATIONAL and REDLINE back in the late 80’s somehow that same hood today is blood affiliated…
As of recently they realized its a good recruiting tool but overall it had little to do with the spread of any particular gang… but the music did help foster the climate!
