Nas is the only NY artist to make the top 10 last year. The south has 6 of the top 10 selling albums under their belt showing the South is still on top.
Edit: I forgot Kanye’s album isn’t a rap album. Yes Lupe Fiasco went gold but his album dropped December 18th(143k first week), this is for sales during 2008.

THE GAME IS FUCKED UP. Hold on, you know the game is fucked up when Def Jam, with as rich of a history as it has in the history of this Hip Hop shit, has only 2 very successful artist…and they are both R&B singers(NeYo & Rihanna). What ever happened to a Hip Hop label??? What ever happened to a label whose sole objective was to produce good Hip Hop music???? Look at these sales, these are awful, where is New York???
Artist that need to be successful to save this game:
-Outkast(together that is!!)
-Jay-Z(on some steady shit, not just a record here and there)
-Nas
-The Roots
-and a couple others, but these are the guys who have previously acheived a certain level of mainstream stature(and yes The Roots did it with “Phrenology” and “Things fall apart” which both went plat)who currently find themselves out of place in what this bullshit industry has become

SOUTH ON TOP RIGHT NOW!…MEN LIE WOMEN LIE NUMBERS DONT!
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:24 pm
yo rtny, i dunno why u tryna make this into a south vs hip hop shit. you can argue that the south is on top but we all kow that 95% of the garbage hip hop is saturated with is from the south. the other 5% have to do with CORNY-ASS RnB niggaz. metrosexual-ass bow wow niggaz and shit. The south is killing hip hop, and RnB is sure as hell helping it to do so. no more hope in this game, HIP HOP IS DEAD, point blank period. like saigon said “HIP HOP ID GAY”
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:26 pm
808’s and Heartbreak isn’t a “Rap” album.. making G-Unit on the top 10.
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:26 pm

January 2nd, 2009 at 9:09 pm
LUDA!
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:10 pm
SOUTH ON TOP RIGHT NOW I agree with that and I don’t see any problem with that at all. It’s not going to be like this forever though. After a while the game change and the public get tired of the same that’s been popular and want something else new and fresh and then the West or east takes over for awhile. it’s always been like this. What’s hot today is not going to be hot all the time.
Stop hating on the south and just do your thing and sooner or later the mainstream is ready for some other shit of hiphop
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:16 pm
Ice Cube made more money than all them niggas. his shit was straight indy.and the shit was dope. hiphop aint dead yall just listening to the wrong niggas. im glad 50 flopped. he talked shit about half the niggas in the top 10. everybody he talked shit about did double what TOS did.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:18 pm
this is pathetic! smh
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:25 pm
hiphop ain’t DEAD it’s just that the rappers who are selling aren’t all that but who cares, if you are a big fan of hiphop then you don’t care who sell more records. There are tons of great rappers out there doing great music you just dont find them on billboard lists. Check out Immortal Techniques latest material. That mothafucka is dope as hell and thats quality rap music
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:31 pm
fav songz from all those albums
heartless – kanye
breathe – nas
fried chicken – nas
why everybody hate cris – luda
one more drink – luda
i do it for hip hop – luda
camera phone- game
dope boys – game
with fried chicken being the tippity top fav. the production was crazy and fresh. busta and nas delivered.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:36 pm
oh year a few joints off TI shit and 1 from jeezy
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:43 pm
Keeping it real, people care too much about record sales. Record sales don’t make an album good. The quality of the music is what makes the album good. Yeah, SoundScan shows you how many copies of a CD were sold, but they don’t show how many people who bought the CD didn’t like it or even felt like they just wasted their money. Just think about that. It’s not about record sales. It’s about the quality of the record.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:46 pm

January 2nd, 2009 at 9:57 pm
da only album im lookin forward to in 09 is loso’s way. maybe bp3
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:06 pm
Im from the south and I think its funny how NY is the only one picked on when it comes to record sales. Wat about the west coast and midwest? lol… and itsa funny cuz a whole lotta niggaz aint release albums from up top this year. Niggaz like Busta, Jay, Talib, and Jada working on they next projects. I cant even think of 5 major artists from NY that even relased albums this year. LOL… But go head south and lets make this money. I’m still waitin on that Blueprint 3 tho… lol
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:21 pm
I’mma a Broklyn nigga and the south make records that sell nobody should hate on that its not the artist or the south fault if the music ain’t good its the fans. to me no one is on top because sale ain’t good. I sugest we all come together NORTH SOuth EasT and WEST and we just KEEP the good MC’s and blackball the garbage one’s. HIP HOP is not about east coast west coast north or south it’s about good outstanding music.
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:32 pm
50 cent – Before I Self Destruct
Eminem – The Relapse
Jay-Z – Blueprint 3
Real hiphop artists that dont rock tight jeans or drink cough syrup.
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:37 pm
Fake is what sells. Rick Ross, Game, Plies, Wayne. Meanwhile guys like Freeway, Beanie Sigel, Lupe dont get noticed. Beanie Sigel is like Scarface & Ice Cube rolled in 1.
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:41 pm
the south is still on top???
im starting to think this site was made by a south nigga that made this just to diss new york artist..how is the south on top??
when late 2008-2009 new york been coming with heat
1.G-unit been making the hottest mixtape in 08
2.Jay-z-brooklyn we go hard hardest shit out
3.busta rhymes-arab money HOTTEST SHIT OUT!
4.Jim jones-pop champagne SEC.HOTTEST SHIT OUT

January 2nd, 2009 at 11:38 pm

All your doing is listing the most famous rappers in the old pop cultures. 50 cent? hahaha.
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:30 am
When are you guys gonna give the honors for best mixtapes, you G-Unit owned that straight up
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:03 am
Only reason south on top bcuz albums not being released in many other places. How many albums came out from ppl in diff regions? Plus, how come Soulja Boy(not tht i like his music) or Q-Tip up there. They both sold more than Exit 13.
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:55 am
yea cuz these were all relle good albums right? these u consider rappers…there are 2 rappers that deserve that top 10 spot, nas and the game…and the games album was completely disappointing, and dun even say shit u know its true, it wasnt close to documentary or doctors advocate…not even close. its like nowadays the only way ppl like u is cuz u make a lot of money and everyones like oh shit their good than beat them and shit…. u guys dunno shit about rap if u thinking like that, 8 of the 10 rappers on this list are nothing but a bunch of sell out motherfuckers get ur paper man that wat rap is all about…thanx for ruining it…AND FUCK YOU IF U LIKE WAYNE UR…KICKS SO FLY LIKE LIU KANG please!, id like to see that guy come up with a rhyme like “At a thousand degrees celcius i make emcees melt, fuck my record label i appear courtesy of myself”…im waiting….
January 3rd, 2009 at 2:37 am
the only albums actually going to the store and buying in that top ten were… paper trail, recession, theatre of mind and untitled… over all 2008 was a bad year for hip hop… when I look back now… late 2006 through 2007 was actually a good period for hip hop… 08 straight up sucked…
January 3rd, 2009 at 2:38 am
just to correct some things:
1. Lupe’s album dropped in 2007
2. to post #15 by rule – those sales are not entirely accurate
3. Flo-Rida is not HIP-HOP
4. danga1181 – I agree if Kardi was from NY they would note him
5. Ice Cube shit was not independent… he had major label distributed he just didn’t get the marketing and promo money from them
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:57 am
Everyone always says it was better before. Don’t worry a lot of posters will talk about how Wayne will shit on any rapper ten years from now.
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:58 am

January 3rd, 2009 at 4:59 am
my bad I thought they didn’t accept the word “shit”
January 3rd, 2009 at 8:09 am
first.. WHERE IS LUPE?????
there’s a few problems i see with us as hip hop fans… the main one is that we don’t respect those that came before. we’re quick to call them not relevant and washed up. i mean in other genres they salute those before… why are we quick to give respect to the OG’s on the street but not on the mic.
Also, as a whole we always hatin’ on someone and it’s not about disliking their music b/c i really don’t like lil wayne. i’m not a hater, but lyrically he’s not the monster everyone claim him to be. half the time he don’t make sense and since when can a poet (emcee) not be about words. he’s entertaining sometimes. i respect his hustle, he did get a milli in a week but if i never have to hear a milli again i’d be happy.
we over here debating on whether or not kanye should be considered on the list. dude sold a million in a month… that’s a hustle worth respecting expecially since only wayne and ti sold more. ti’s album dropped late september, kanye’s late november… seems like somebody likes him. and maybe when he goes back to his original format he’ll be introducing hip hop to a whole set of new fans. that would be good for hip hop.

2009 Albums must haves:
1.Eminem
2.Jay-Z
3.50 Cent
4.Beanie Sigel
5.Freeway
2009 Joke of the Year album
1.Rick Ross-Deeper than Rap
MiamiDade C.O. greatest hits
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:50 am
I never paid much attention to Plies but i just realized he hustles hard. Two albums in one year and he sold i think over 200k of Defintion of Real his first week which was overlooked due to Wayne’s hyped album released the same date. You may not enjoy the music but i think that his work ethic is respectable.
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:43 pm
What about The Dream album?
He impacted the rap game of 2008, had more #1 hits, and he can’t even sing straight, but he wrote for muhfuckas who could.
But his own album was decent sounding, nice beats on there.
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:44 pm
i wonder if LL gonna blame jayz for this one too. or will he blame 50cent this time
nelly should depart gracefully before he gets the roy jones knock out cuz his numbers are disgusting
and if ya’ll niggas got a problem with the south sellin records, then support other artist. they’re fans support them they just make the music. ny fans dont really support ny artist unless ur really bringing the heat. west and midwest are almost extinct
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:39 pm
You Niggaz Must Can’t Read Or Somethin ..The Title Of This Post Is Called …”Top 10 Selling Rap Albums In 2008″,Lupe Dropped In 07 ..Thats Why He’s Not Up There ..And With That Said ..Nas!!! ..Almost At Gold, Lets Go Baby!
