Lupe Fiasco Gives His Thoughts On Hip Hop

I feel like hip-hop is coming to sort of a..i dare say…an end???…(no pun intended)…

its not the same energy…hasn’t been for a long time…just a bunch of nothing out there…take it how u may…I hope the new vanguard proves me wrong and brings back the day of substance minus the webcam video to announce its return…

not “end” in the since of cease to exist…but more so transform into something else so expression is more meaninful…I put question marks on it because i still question my own thoughts about the feeling. But so many “what the fuck?!?!” moments have piled up so incredibly over the last few years that it begs a rethink of the trajectory of the art form.

im a “new nigga” but old in the senses of the fast food generation….the “new new niggas” i.e. The Cool Kids, the incredibly interesting and though provoking Charles Hamilton and the like are the vanguard i speak of…honestly I want it to change…never really been a fan of preserving…attention span is way too low and distorted for that hahaha

    agreed

  7. domcorleone Says:

I think Lupe needs to stop crying about the direction of hip-hop and focus on his own music and message. And maybe he shouldn’t retire after a 3-album career, that’s all.

  8. POINT84 Says:

Umm lupe, you’re part of the reason its dying. ALL of you are wack

  13. Young Jerz Says:

Lupe has put more substance in the game with his two albums than some have their whole career. I agree hip-hop is at a party and ringtone stage which is cool cuz im a party’r. But the next morning when we listten to wat was jammin in the club the music aint talkin bout shit. Im eager to see wat the new school has to bring with C.Hamilton, Cory Gunz, Mickey factz, and Wale.

  16. WHITE BOY CHICAGO..............BISD will do more numbers then your favorite artists LOL Says:

I look at as this if it’s broken fix’s it if you can’t and if you know that you ain’t then shut the fuck up. The only people who are killin hiphop are the one’s who has something negetive to say about it. I mean imagine if hiphop was actually a human bean hearing all these terrible insults. I would either kill my ownself or retire cuz to me it would be a shame especially it coming from almost every hiphop artists.

In my opinion don’t talk about it be about it if it’s that bad then do what Nas did…”HipHop Is Dead album”. I would co sign a artist if they were to put out an album express hiphop then on an interview insulting hiphop. Because with a album at least we know where your coming from and at least we know that your still reppin it. But to express your feeling on an interview lets hiphop listeners know that if hiphop wasn’t their only talent then they wouldn’t be fuckin with it.

Their alot of rappers who has proven themselves in hiphop and some would made enough money. And now most of the rappers would made it lefted the music business to become actors or something else higher. As far as Lupe goes i can’t agree or disagree it’s his opinion all i know is that this is a new generation you ain’t gonna hear now what you heard 5/10 years ago shit changes.

  17. WIZE Says:

Lupe is a fake motha fucka just like the other rappers he’s complaining about. I used to fuck wit dude cause I thought he was a true emcee. But den I realized that he’s a corny arrogant motha fucka who just wants to sound deep. His substance is a straight up illusion. He’s always talking shit and never able to explain in depth what the fuck he’s saying. He thinks that because he can finish a scentence that he’s a cut above the rest. I don’t like him cause he just thinks that he’s better and smarter than everyone else. His complaints have no validity to me. He sounds bitter and disappointed that his contrived intellectual approach didn’t gain him the worldwide recognition and respect that he feels he deserves. Get tha fuck outta here already Lupe!!

  18. Undercovermc Says:

I don’t completely agree with what Lupe is saying, but even he’s not sure if he agrees with it.

To the people hating on his music, listen to it, don’t just skim through it. In fact, I doubt you’ve even heard many of his songs that weren’t singles. He is one of the best emcees making music right now. His first two album are fire, yes an album with no club bangers can be fire. OMG, no way! SMH.

  19. CheckerFred Says:

Lupe is corny. He gets in these interviews and jus starts talkin out his ass. I actually bought The Cool which is a good album but still Lupe isn’t relevant enough in hiphop to be issuing it a death certificate or diagnose it for that matter. The sound reflects the times. However, every so often we get that one superstar that starts and movement and pulls us in another direction. Then he gets swallowed by the mainstream or cloned a billion times over and we write his ass off too. Its the game people and it ain’t goin nowhere.

  20. Undercovermc Says:

^He does have a habit of saying slightly controversial/unexpected things, but in this case it wasn’t an interview, it was a forum post. It’s understandable for him to ramble on a forum post that he didn’t really expect to be quoted on hip-hop blogs.

  21. WHITE BOY CHICAGO..............BISD will do more numbers then your favorite artists LOL Says:

Lube should focus on gettin his money and his props dude hasn’t brought out a album in 2 years and dude is talkin shit. Im mean im not saying that i don’t like him all im saying is that he’s not the one killin hiphop so he shouldn’t worry about. I think with him worrying about hiphop makes him guilty when really he’s lyrically innocent.

If a artists knows that their music is whats puttin hiphop in a great space then they shouldn’t worry about anything. For the rappers that don’t know how to spit do you thing that they care alot about hiphop “NO” because they know that a great beat and hook to a song is the new lyrics oppose to words and thats how they get paid.

  22. ItsKocky.com Says:

    REALLY CHARLES HAMILTON ?

    fuck it.

  23. Dlo Says:

The bloggers should be running the industry…We know the kool kids is cool but not hot. They keep money into the wrong projects. Corey Gunz…Corey Gunz..Jada..Styles…. can someone else let me know who I’m missing? Gangsta rap is almost dead niggas starting to show there true colors, they’re not artist no more everybody trying to steal JayZ format instead of just being true to the art form and being solid artist. Artist nowadays need to get solid lawyers and business in line instead of just trying to jump into every pond. That’s when niggas start to show they bitch side too many bitches bitching…

  24. the real gangster Says:

    lupe your dead WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. Alkada Says:

I like the new design, it’s fresh and artistic. Hip Hop right now is LOST! Too much songs about NOTHING! No Soul, No Meaning, No Substance, nothing you can feel! A whole lot of GARBAGE! I will say The Southern “RAPPERS”(the ones who made all those records about dance steps) really messed things up with the simplified water down silly lyrics. The corporate world likes when Blacks don’t think and stop being concerned with real life issues and just sing and dance away all the while acting ignorant. NYC Rappers used to be thought provoking and rhymed about real life happenings(even if it didn’t happen directly to them) but then people started to say, “oh,that didn’t happen to him, he’s being FAKE, he’s not KEEPING IT REAL). Today lyrics don’t mean anything, it’s all about your image and that’s whats really HURTING Hip Hop! I think right now Joel Ortiz is one of the best young guns. The beats now a days has no feeling either, get back the real producers: Premo, Pete Rock, Heat Makers, Diamond D, Lord Finess, Large Professor, Havoc, Alkemist, Buckwild, EZ Elee P. Some real NYC producers!

  26. .. Says:

i agree with lupe but all you people that say lupe wak got 2 b having a laugh 2dope albums that done alot for hiphop as a new dude that came in the game

  27. FrontTailPenis Says:

everybody wants to be “the cool” guy aka the rapper *smh* they finally paying back us the fans after buying lack luster CDs all these fuckin years. ima divide rappers into 3 categories, with some falling into more than one category

    *LYRICISTS
    *GARBAGE
    *SUBSTANCE

from all the rap media i’ve been exposed to DMX is the king of the substance category for me off his first 3 shit alone. people say pac is but i dont listen to pac. well the garbage is pretty obvious and to be really honest…. the so call lyricists are average on their best days but fuck… it wont get any better than that. then you got the lyrically oriented people like lupe and the rest of them that are so fuckin arrogant think their on top of the world its just that nobody buys their album. the rap genre as we know it is changing just like R&B changed. i have R Kelly’s 12PLAY right here and his latest cut double up is quite different. What genre would you call T-Pain and Akon? is that R&B? thats why i gotta love niggaz like Bobby V that trys to keep that old school shit, even tho imo his notes need a lil work(”Our Love” is my shit). aww well…. i dont think anybody has all the answers… but.. one thing is for certain hiphop has grew and is still growing which means the people it touches the more different version of it you’ll here comin out. i mean people still call dancehall reggae. pfff…..i listen anything that captures me these days which is mostly rock(lol i dnt even kno wat genre of rock, the one i like is called) and dat 80s shit. it dont make sense to hate caz i cant relate, it is what it is

  28. nay Says:

son this nigga sound like a real dick head he said he like niggas like (THE COOL KIDS) “SUCK A DICK” THEM NIGGAS IS WACK JUST LIKE HIM I FUCK WITH NAS HES HIP HOP. BUT I CANT FUCK WITH ALL THIS NERD RAP BS MICKEY FACTZ N ALL THE REST OF THEM GUYS WHAT THEY MAKIN ANT HIP HOP @ALL LIKE UR MAN “KAYNE WEST” IF HIS MUSIC SOLD THEN HE WILL SAY HIP HOP SAVE HIM LOL

  29. hard ass dude Says:

maan all yall need to shut the fuck up.

the new heroes of hiphop are:

soulja boy, boosie, lil wayne, and all them niggas gettin they paper.

fuck lupe, talent dont mean nothing if you aint got that cheese.

  30. Q Says:

    @ Officer Ross
    Get a life

  31. FrontTailPenis Says:

wisdom without wealth is worthless and serves no purpose.

  32. BAN WHITE BOY Says:

wow white cunt youre still on this site writing essays that no one reads cuz once they see “WHITE BOY” they know its just gonna be some illiterate non sense of a miserable faggot trying way to hard

“I look at as this if it’s broken fix’s it if you can’t and if you know that you ain’t then shut the fuck up.”

funny thing is thats only the first sentence of your worthless essay and you already sound like an imbred hillbilly with a first grade education

seriously though, read that first sentence of yours back in your head, youll realize how much of a retarded fuck you sound like

and LMFAO @ “human bean” i remember sayin that shit in kindergarten, but im done reading your paragraphs cuz it already feels like ive lost plenty IQ points just acknowledging your illiterate ass

  33. Werrt Says:

To love something is to criticize it when you feel it is going nowhere. To challenge it to get better. There’s nothing wrong to have negative things to say about something that you like and has been part of your life for a long time. Whether you agree with him or not respect his opinion instead of talking shit about him like he’s a nobody. Lupe is a great MC and has put out a lot of quality music there’s no doubt about that….and I can understand why he feels the way he does and he is not the only one in the game with these thoughts that’s for sure.

  34. da vinci Says:

yo all u motha f’ers got a point and thats the crazy thing there is no ” right ” or ” wrong ” its all opinion its wat u feel and who the fuck is to tell u wat ur thinkins isnt right unless u on some next shit………….. imma ny nigga and music is ma life but it( rap ) has changed its not the golden age anymore when hiphop was makin the crowd move or spittin ur hot 16 make a nigga say oooooooo……. just like any civilization and or culture there is a period of new thought and with that new thought comes the hate from who the old heads who are used to one thing and cant accept change but hey we got a black president change gunna come all u gotta do is roll wit it cuz its gunna happen like it or not adjust adapt do w/e u have to do but cut all the hating……….. and to u niggaz sayin lupe is wack eat a dick that nigga real sit ur dumb ass down listen and shut the fuck up and if u cant comprehend then ova ur head it is leave it there dont hate let homie do him

  35. PointBlank Says:

THe game would be a hell of a lot better if everyone involved had a real love for hiphop. I questions Lupe’s love of the craft. He don’t have that hunger and drive that real hiphop artists have. From that comment he made about Tribe Called Quest to all the other shit he pops…he comes off as a regular who just jumped in the game for some quick cash. I personally think he’s a good lyricist but he dont’ seem built for this. Rappers who have a real love for the craft tough it out no matter what. This dude seems hollow. He aint put in enough work. If he’s so upset with hiphop then go in the studio and put out a classic. Show these dudes how its done or retire.

  36. BAN WHITE BOY Says:

    “da vinci” is white boy

  37. da vinci Says:

“ban white boy” ask ya moms how white i am eat a dick fag and dont write no shit bak “take that take that “

  38. akb1 Says:

damn, lupe…. this dude dosn’t even know the words to electric relaxation and he thinks he can play pallbearer to a hiphop funeral? i have no respect for this guy. lupe, get that tin ear checked– those beats are ass, son. “changing the trajectory of the art form?” hip hop is everything…. the beats are sampling everything from james brown to billy joel to some wild arab shit from timbo. nas is too many years and two alltime classics ahead of your game lupe, just give up.

  39. Bubba Says:

Lupe is the greatest rapper out right now. niggas sayin he fake but only heard like two of his songs and read this article like you know what he’s about. niggas just mad because they don’t understand concepts and everything has to be said over and over again so that they can understand it. I think it’s funny because yall not even getting what he is sayin right here he didn’t say hip-hop is dead he basically said that for like the past 2-3 years it’s been straight garbage every where and you had to dig deep to find substance, but now we got niggas coming in that can actually spit so we just have to close this chapter of hip-hop and continue to the next and never look back.

  40. forceone2000 Says:

hip hop is definitely on life support, but i will say this to all of hip hop’s warriors that the return of hip hop is very near and it will not be returned by a name artist………..MESSAGE !!!!

  41. for real?? Says:

i never realized how corny most of y’all are on this joint… why is it ok for you to have an opinion? “i don’t like lupe” “he don’t got real love for the game” “he’s lame for liking cool kids and charles hamilton” “he’s lame for his quote about tribe”… but he can’t????

i mean, come on. his opinion is relevant and it’s HIS opinion. he’s just itching for some substance. hip hop as we know it, is coming to an end. the “we” i refer to are those that appreciate lyrics and word play that still had a consistent theme throughout. now it’s about the beat or the rapper swagg, then after that it’s the rappers lyrics. that’s why ringtones are so popular. lupe is a beast. he loves hip hop. y’all mofo’s that think kick push is his only song are lame… and need to check his catalog b/c with the cool, conceptually, he created almost an entire album based off of a character/ storyline he created in food & liquor.

  42. Hip Hop Lives Says:

Lup would not be where he is if he wqasn’t on a kanye record a few years back, his records prior to that were weak. Kick Push had a nice beat and a ctachy chrous. Really, I don’t consider him one of those at the forefront of Hip Hop in ‘09 ot the cool kids. Kidz In The Hall are better, but their last LP only had about 3 or 4 tracks on I felt musicially, Naledge can rap though, nice flow. Haven’t even heard Charles Hamilton. Phat Kat, Black Milk, Elzhi and them Detroit cats keeps on putting out modern day Hip Hop classics, I enever read about them saying Hip Hop’s dead or dying. Hip Hop is never going to die, there’s always great music, people who refer to Hip Hop dying are talking about mainstream rap music, the underground shit will always survive whether the artists progress or make old sounding music, there is a global culture of people who love and live Hip Hop. Lupe should just do his things and maybe hang out with some people who do love Hip Hop, maybe get out of the US and see how people in Europe, UK, Japan, Africa and places love it and keep it alive.

  43. MAYDAY Says:

Everybody has an opinion. Hip Hop or RAP is like Starbucks right now. You can hate on all you want but you know that shit is aiight ! Step up to the counter and they got what you need. Just like the game right now. If you grow tired of the radio stuff, I gaurantee you can find something that suites your taste. Start digging through the crates…or I-Tunes.
