So if you have a choice between feeding your kids right now or waiting months to find a job which one will u choose. I can make $6/hr today or $60/hr today. Thats the paradox and dillema of every kid in the hood between the ages of 13 & Up. Maybe even younger. Its easy to say go get a job. But what if it takes months to find a job and years to find a decent one. Some kids dont wanna risk their lives. Others feel like they have nothing to lose. Its a gamble. I know dudes that been selling dope all the lives. Seen them go from being on the corner to ridin cadillac escalades on 26s. Real Talk. Real Life. How is that glamourizing for a kid who father is absent, mother works dead in jobs, and his stomach is touching his back. Or even for a kid whose parents have a education and they didnt get a nice ride until their thirties and u got the dopeman ridin a lexus at 19. That is what our inner city youth see everyday. This image was there b4 biggie and will long be there afterwards because it is the reality of life. Look at the bigger picture. How many people did biggie take wit him out the hood. He showed them that u can make it out the "trap" and be successful without selling dope. Also in the movie Puff made him stop selling dope. Thats a positive message to me. Like I said b4 his music is for people living the thuglife. It tells them what to look out for and how the gotta carry themselves to survive if they choose that lifestyle. Cuz whether "SOCIETY" wants to admit it or not, sombody somewhere is living these stories. Sure rappers but a 100 on 10 but thats to really turn a person around from living like that. Cuz if u cant handle the lyrics that life aint 4 u. But if u can relate I suggest u take heed until u find a way out. They don't call if the concrete jungle 4 nothing. SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST

The article makes the very valid point that the movie and African American culture tends to glorify and glamorize "thug life", when really...who wants to live that life?
If you had a choice, would you choose to sell drugs and die before you reached the age of 26? I wouldn't. And don't say that there is no other choice, because yes there is. Biggie Smalls is just one example of that. Yes, he got to be a rich and famous musician and had alot of success with that, but look at how his life ended. The article write just wanted to make the point that the movie doesn't lay it down the way that it happened, like American Gangster or Paid in Full did.
Instead it makes it seem as if Biggie Smalls' life was the best life ever, completely glosses over the negative parts (and there were many) and enforces the message that if you come from the hood, fuck education, and fuck getting a professional job, the life of Biggie Smalls is what you should be striving for. And it's not just this movie, it's alot of rappers and hip hop artists also enforcing that message. That's why I can't even stand to listen to the stuff anymore, with the exception of Jay-Z, Kanye, Lupe Fiasco, and Common.
Smh, is all I have to say. I'm done.

I FEEL EVERYONE IS MISSING THE POINT. YOU HAVE A PERSON WHO GROWS UP AROUND DRUGS AND MURDER, BUT OVERCOMES THE OBSTACLE OF GETTING SWALLOWED UP BY THE HOOD, AND BECOMES A SUCCESSFUL ARTISTS AS WELL AS AN ENTREPRENEUR. HOW IS THAT NOT INSPRIRATIONAL. REMEMBER THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT ACTUALLY LIVE THE STREET LIFE AND SOME ARE SUCCESSFULL AND FAILURES. HIS MUSIC WAS FOR THOSE PEOPLE. IF U NEVER LIVED IN THE HOOD, IF YOU AINT NEVER MADE YOU MONEY FROM THE STREETS, IF U CANT RELATE THAN DONT JUDGE. HE IS ALSO A ROSE THAT GREW FROM THE CONCRETE.

yo 2shooters get the fuck outta here wit that bullshit, thats blasphemy dont u ever ever ever compare 50 cent to BIG. Biggie skill is off the charts, story tellin reflecting, metaphors, flow, big black and ugly had bitches on his dick, witty all that. curtis couldnt roll up biggie's blunts let alone get on a mic wit him wit that lazy i'm gangsta and i shoot everybody everyday cuz i'm a killer and i'm the best even though aint no bodies being found i still kill everyday

rtny is wrong for even responding to this article, 2 arguements i promised i would never have again, the skills of big, and the skills of hov. everybody else can be debated all day, but i dont argue those 2 anymore, if u dont know u wasnt meant to know.
even if the movie is wack i'm supporting it, not for ny, but for brooklyn, for the fact that biggie's greatness had jayz trying to compete wit a dead man for 10yrs. he still rhyming in competition wit big. thats love for the game, and respect for the illest mc, please yo tell big he's unbelievable friend or foe biyatchhhh

I'll have to see the movie before I can totally agree with the author. But based on his review, I get the feeling that the movie stays conducive to what the record companies have been doing for the past decade. They've been glamorizing, and over exaggerating certain elements of street life, and subliminally encouraging black men to get money by any means necessary while shelving and repressing the socially responsible, mature, and morally conscious hip-hop music.

The author seems upset that the hip-hop community keeps accepting and perpetuating these sensationalized images of black men. His point is that there was more to Biggie's story than this movie portrays, and the shit they chose to portray only sensationalizes BIG and reinforces the stereo typical get money, have sex, party and bullshit mentality that a lot of us have bought into. That is not what real life is about, and BIG had figured that out before he died, but the movie doesn't touch on that.
