I don't think it's a question of it being rappers more vocal and athletes not...by the nature of their work Rappers are allowed to be more vocal because that's how they make their living...yes it is to make good records but because they use their voices they are expect to speak on other issues as well...althelets on the other hand are more so at times allowed to stick to what they do or it can jeopardize their carreers...they are signed to a team that holds them to certain standards or fines and fees might follow...rappers on the other hand to receive the same scrutiny so they can do and say a lot more...after they are done with their carreers they become more influential, ie Magic Johnson and the like.

in this argument, i will say Jay-z..

now, if you mention Michael Jordan.. Michael Jordan has had the largest impact on the youth in this generation than any other figure.. Michael Jordan has put an imprint on the youth's culture.. you can see his shoe in all of the Spike Lee and other African American Movies in the 90s, he was on every Wheates Box, Magazine, endorsement; Every person that visits this site has worn a pair of Jordans i can assure you that.. without Jordan, there would be no Kobe or Lebron, TMAc, etc.. these guys are all recreations of him.. Jay-z hasn't even become vocal about what is going on in the world til lately.. you have other people in hip hop who have been vocal than him throughout the years.. Jordan never spoke about the current events of the world, but had more affect on every 5,6,7,8,9,10 year old and teenager in the 90s than any figure in hip hop. If you think about it, the entire NBA stopped wearing small shorts because of him, every shooting guard that has entered the game after him tries to play just like him. His influence has instilled fundamentals of determination, drive, etc..

In the end, the average teenage Jay-z fan knows the Blueprint, Black Album, Dynasty, Reasonable Doubt Jay-z.. ask them to tell you 5 songs off of Vol 1 and Vol 2 and 3.. they dont really know...

Jay gave concerts in China, Australia, Europe, South America...around the world. So, when he is in the news with a 120 million dollar live nation deal, you can read that in many countries.

We have a Black president in America. He has the hugest influence. Athletes and rappers and alike will have to step the their game, because PEOPLE are flying high off this and the nonsense that has been going down will just be ignored by those who work and aspire to actually have an effect on their country and the world

Too bad athletes are more money driven these days and dont wanna hurt their contracts (with the exception of a few dumbasses i.e. Plaxico Burress, Vick, Pacman Jones). We are faaaaaaaar from the days of Muhammed Ali. Look what happened when Josh Howard refused to recognize the Star Spangled Banner, he got instantly scrutinized and had to issue an apology. Athletes are role models to children especially when they perform charity work which is not show on common media, but watch an NBA game and there is always an NBA Cares commercial. Rappers have influence, and the sad thing is that is it a little too much influence to the point where it makes people fake who they are. So just because a person has great influence doesnt necessarily mean a person has positive influence. 80% of rappers I think have a negative influence and 100% of media coverage focuses on that 80%. They never talk about Mos Def and Kweli having a bookstore or rappers like Joell Ortiz who puts money back into his neighborhood. But they wanna talk about how Kanye is depressed and why he lashes out at papparazzi. We have to just face it, POSITIVE INFLUENCE IS JUST NOT NEWS WORTHY. Which is why there is such a culturally positive and wide gap between Barack Obama and other black men in society.
