Will Barack Obama’s Victory Influence Hip Hop Music?

Common speaking on Barack Obama & Hip Hop:
“I really do believe we as hip-hop artists pick up what’s going on in the world and try to reflect that,” he told CNN, outlining his belief that mainstream as well as so-called “conscious” rappers — the more socially aware — will pick up on what he sees as the more optimistic prospects of an Obama presidency.

“I think hip-hop artists will have no choice but to talk about different things and more positive things, and try to bring a brighter side to that because, even before Barack, I think people had been tired of hearing the same thing,” he said.

Agree…if you haven’t noticed, Gangsta Rap is dead my people. People are slowly getting tired of hearing that shit. Only mainstream “Gangsta rapper” is Jeezy ..1 Dude..remember State Prop & The whole ROC roster, LOX, Gunit, they were all hot..now its pure commercial..its more “happy” shit. niggas making Happy music are the ones that are selling…(not including Jay Z, cause he can rap about anything and sell records).

Let me know if you agree or not…And if you don’t WHY? (no ignorant responses will be given attention to)

  11. amsterdam Says:

well common is a great rapper luv his album but most conscious dont sound so positive at all. all they do is repeat whats going on in news and tell stories out history books not to say its something bad but if thats real hip hop then hiphop should be very boring i mean come on conscious rappers are just great in trying to make pretty simply stories very deep what hip hop needs is whats going on now all different types of artist and the oldheads need to stop Y-ning cuz thats fucking up this whole shit its like most of them are like the best teacher but there way of teaching is very boring for most youngster

  12. 2cents Says:

    idk…lol

Music goes in cycles the president sorta has an effect on it but it seems to be more to it then that! Music has gone back to the club but the “gangster” stuff ain’t dead yet!

  17. Rio Says:

Mainstream hihpop is so superficial and materialistic it’s not even funny. You can’t find any other music genre where the mainstream artists are so obsessed with talking about money this and money that. I mean 95% of mainstream hiphop is wack lyrics about cars, money, bitches hoes and gangsta stuff.

I blame the record labels who are only interested in signing these knuckle heads who really don’t have any interesting to rap about. There are a lot of great rappers out there with great lyrics about all types of interesting topics, that makes you think. Rappers like Immortal Technique, Jedi Mind Tricks…etc but record labels aren’t interested in rappers like that. They rather continue to sign all these “I fucked 10 hoes last night and my car is hotter than yours” rappers.

I’m sure Obama’s victory will influence hiphop BUT it’s up to record labels to give those rappers a shot to shine. You find most quality hiphop in the underground scene that’s for sure.

I hope fans understand how talented Joell Ortiz is and I would love to see him blow up cause that dude really has something to say.

I think Com is right that the President sets the tone for the country. And there is no question that President-elect Obama has indicated that the tone for his administration will be much different and much more conciliatory than Bush.

But like everything else, there are a number of factors beyond Obama’s -and hip-hop’s- control. More than anything, the lack of money in the system will weed out the much less bankable artists as labels only invest in sure things.

And to a large extent, I think that listeners are turning away from the alpha thug with the $100K chain on his neck. Its just out of step with the times. Don’t you think Busta looks corny with dancing around with cash in his hands beside a Bentley in his latest video? That’s played out.

As Slick Wilie said: its the economy, stupid.

    Or the Illuminati. Whichever.

  27. shine95 Says:

yeah, I think it’s going back to the early 90’s again. just like how the fashion is changing, slimming down like the clothes in the 80’s, the same for our music going back to that conscious rap. I say this cause the gangster image has gone corny people. how can you be so real and so hood and so gangsta when you dry snitching on yourself at the same time? what are you a part time killer/entertainer? get the fuck outta here with that bullshit. we heard the same sob stories over and over again. we know yo ass is strugglin mothafucka, we know already. you never seen a mob cat, all of a sudden start rappin. why? he’s exposing himself. you can’t be a gangsta then all of a sudden tell everybody that you is a gangsta. Gangsters don’t do that shit. they just do what they do. why you gonna brag about shit that’s gonna get you in trouble and your friends in trouble. think about that for minute yall, yall so called rappers and emcees. what is keepin it real? are we keepin it real with ourselves at this moment right now, or are we keepin it real with the street code? entertainers are singing for sing sing. The code of silence and the exposure from fame do not mix.

  28. Smurf Says:

It won’t change the whole rap game..but it’s gonna be a new subject for these rappers! Most of them didn’t give a Fuck about Politic, now it’s gonna be interessing to hear these gangsta artist talk about the democrate!

Agree with the above ^^^^ yes we know whats goes on in the hood and etc nobody saying to ignorne that but we don’t like hearing all the neagitive. Its easy to feel down when all you’re hearing is neagtives, much harder to be postive and up beat

  31. Demarco Fresh Says:

When will you people come to your senses. Republicans and Democrats are the worst out of all the parties. Why you keep voting for these niggas, I don’t know. If everybody really is striving for equality and wants to live in peace, then why not become a liberated country. Vote for the Liberals. 2012 or die.

  32. vigorous Says:

obama’s victory won’t influence shit. STFU and stop dick-riding this man. im sure he’s gonna be a good president but i dunno why people treating him like he’s sum kind of god or sumthing…he hasnt done shit yet; he’s not ghandi and he doesnt make miracles so STFU already. common is a fucking idiot

  33. Chanell Says:

    True True..
I am tired of hearing the Same stuff.

  34. Mahogany01 Says:

I’m tired of hearing the same stuff too, but I am older so it really takes a real song to make me want to listen. Being that I watched Hip Hop from the beginning, it sort of saddens me as to how it turned out. It’s like having real big hopes and aspirations for your child and then they grow up to be shit. Hip Hop does reflect the times though but it is mostly based on young peoples views. In these times, it’s not cool to be young and naive, you have to give yourselves a head start. Don’t wait until your 30’s to open your eyes, we all play a part in making the world better for our children, black, white, asian, puerto rican, jewish, whatever. It’s time to step it up and leave ignorance and stupidity behind. Peace……

  35. C. Franco Says:

I think some of yall are forgetting that American society is all about money…i.e. capitalism. Of course that’s going to come across in rap music — if you were from the hood and became a millionaire by the time you were 25 money would be on your mind
