50 Speaks On Athletes Trying To Rap (A Look At Athletes Attempting A Rap Career)

ESPN: What do you think when you hear athletes try to rap? It seems like all the musicians want to be athletes and all the athletes want to be musicians.

50 Cent: I think a lot of the athletes come from a place of not having very much when they’re growing up, so they relate to the content of the lyrics. There’s also the competitive nature of the art form. Like fighters, like professional ball players, rappers condition themselves to be winners. Hip hop artists might not condition themselves physically, but they’re conditioning themselves mentally in order to feel like the champ. I think the professional athlete can actually identify with the competitive edge that’s actually involved in it. The music has an aggression and speaks a different language to a guy who comes from nothing.

I think their attraction to hip hop is seeing where they come from to seeing where they are now. The music sums up their lives. Shaq made an album. Kobe made an album. Kobe’s album sucked. It would’ve been better if he let me write it. A lot of professional athletes have attempted to do it. Ron Artest almost missed his season trying to do it. It’s a lot harder than it looks.

You Have To Realize That ..Some Of These Athletes ..Actors Also ..Started Out Either As a Rapper Or Singer ..But They Probably Didn’t Want It As Uh Career Choice Because It’s a Good Chance They Wouldn’t Of Made It…You Also Can Tell That Athletes Who Do Take Rap On As a Career Do It For The Love..Because We All Know They Aren’t Doing It For The Money…Like Shaq Who Has Platinum Records.

  4. Backlash Says:

I think Athletes and rappers should stick to what they know in this day and age its hard to take any Athletes or rapper serious. Maybe back than when they had a chance being that lyrics were required to come hard or you were nothing. But now no matter how passionate a ball player is i highly doubt that their lyrics will be taken serios being that it is harder then it looks. But then again you gotta have 2 occupations its all about hustling to get where you going when your dealing with business.

If a rapper wanted to be a professional basketball player or if a professional basketball player wanted to be a rapper. Depending on how serious they are i may take or not take them serious no matter how passionate they are. But then again times has change and while a person body is doing one thing their mind is focus on doing another thing…

  15. BAN WHITE BOY Says:

NO ONE READS UR COMMENTS SO JUST KEEP THEM TO URSELF

  16. Westup Says:

A.I could have cut it, but some problems with his flow. Practice! practice! practice! Shaq has a great voice, deep and dark, but I can’t take the cat serious. Kobe, well, no hard feelings, but stick to b-ball. Ron Artest, shit is just goofy. C.Webb’s shit was goofy too! It’s all about making money, but sometimes the message is not genuine or seems to forced when it comes from athletes, sometimes rappers too, but more so when it comes from atheletes.
