There were plenty of people before that sayin that hip hop ain’t what it used to be. There were plenty people sayin there isn’t as much good music, not enough creativity and all that shit. Nas just came out more publicly with it. I understand that Nas is very influential, but to put the blame on him is ignorant. Plus, Nas intentions for making that statement wasn’t to diss hip-hop or anybody in it. He was trying to have people look at the quality of music and the distorted balance of commercial rap and real rap. Actually, Nas saying that made some rappers be more conscious and aware about what they say, so at the end of the day, that statement did more good for hip hop than Soulja Boy ever will. There are other very prominent artists saying hip hop is dead to this day, so I guess they killed it too.

He did make a point about Lil’Wayne though; To the author of this article, he isn’t stating Lil’Wayne coined the term “I’m the best rapper alive”, but he is saying he was the only one self-proclaiming himself publicly in almost every single- and, even though I don’t like Soulja Boy, he said it correctly: “Since he started calling himself that, everyone says he the best rapper alive.” Because the public will listen and believe anything, and repeat nonsense such as that.
Now, on the other hand, my opinions on Soulja Boy didn’t change from where Ice-T said he kills hip hop; I already knew he did, so I didn’t think Ice-T made a difference. 1st off to even call any rappers who made money in the last 10 years “Hip Hop” is a travesty (there are few exceptions but I can count them on one hand) yes they rap and they are rappers but they are not Hip Hop they do rap music not Hip Hop music. Hip hop has a message that either exposes corupption in society or in ones self it uplifts and shines despite the world around it. It does not glorify the violence but it uses it at the backdrop to a larger sickness in our selves in society. these cats Soulja boy etc… glorify degrade and pander and trade their soul for record sales he has records dissing education and then laughs thru the disclaimer this cat is clown and I should not even waste a minute on him but here I am. My only question is that if someone dug up a time capsule 100 years from now do you really want the records out today to describe Hip Hop not me and anybody thinking about making a records should listen to “Still standing” By the Goodie MOB (play close attention to Ceelo verse)this is your oral testment to the world is this what you want to be remember for?

For all those saying this punk had a point… people (mostly over 30) have been saying that for years – that hip-hop as we have known it and loved it and lived it is no longer! It’s just ironic that this simple shit doesn’t realize that he is an example of the commercial meant-for-12-year-olds-with-matching-IQs shit that Naz claimed “killed hip-hop.” Hip-hop is an art form closer to poetry than to the sewage coming out of this untalented waste of skin. Apparently mr Soulja Faggot has never heard a legendary little album called Illmatic, one that is considered by just about every rapper and fan who knows anything about Hip-Hop to be in the top 5 most influential hip hop albums of all time. The album came out 15 years ago and is still one of the best hip hop records ever recorded. Thats why Nas is a legend.
And get your facts straight, Nas would have released more material on the same level of Illmatic, but big wig producers got ahold of him and coaxed him into aiming for chart topping consumer friendly stuff = more money for Nas… What would you choose if you grew up in the Queensbridge projects your whole life up until then?

wow…i have to say, its quite entertaining watching someone talk about something they THINK they understand and are pretty sure they are right. my opinion on rap was that hip hop was dead before nas even said it. when he did, i was like “Thank God at least one of the mainstream rappers notices that too”. and as for what he said about nas saying that and lil wayne turning around and selling millions of albums..well that just helps prove what nas said. Lil wayne is hip POP.. all he talks about is his bitches.his money.and all these things that are the reason why rap is being ruined and its just about material things.so if he sold millions of albums then that shows how most of these “rap” fans like this rap that its just about being rich,”being a drug dealer”, and having hoes. its ridiculous. so in a sense, he just looked even stupider the the people who actually KNOW what nas meant. that hip hop in the mainstream is pretty much ruined. underground and a few selective mainstream rappers keep it alive.
