How Is Everyone Surviving The Recession?
I put on the news and the first 5 minutes was non stop bad news about the economy. In New York we may have a new train/bus fare between $2.50 to $3! All I hear about is the stock market doing bad, people getting fired and women getting their purses snatched. Clearly I’m not poppin champagne or trickin if I had it. If your wifey/man/family ask for anything expensive this Christmas hit them with the, “It’s a recession,” line. These are the times where you stop trying to be flashy and build that bank account up. How are things going for everyone out there?

I got laid off from an engineering gig at a tv station about a month ago. Having trouble collecting unemployment. Nobody round my way is really hiring, and all the jobs i can find are a fraction of what i was getting paid at my old job. I aint got no ends. Going back to hustling is looking good at the moment.

I just spent over 50k and lost a bit of my hairline getting a MBA in Finance to become an investment banker.. only to have the rug pulled out from under me with this financial crisis ish.
Now i’m stuck begging for a job I could have done before I “wasted” my time going to graduate school.

I’m not doing to bad. im a freelance graphic designer so I make as much as i wanna make. Since the recession started i’ve purchased a truck, a BMW, and a crib. The market is only bad if you look at it from one perspective. I bought one house and im in the process of buying another becasue you can get them cheap right now, and rent them out. As soon as the market goes back up im selling my properties and im gonna be sitting pretty good.
And #3 thats exactly why i left school…it specializes you in one thing, and then when that thing stops doing well you cant find a job….Even if you came out making 50k…it would still take you at least one year as an investment banker to make back what you put in. And with the inflation and the way jobs are going, you wouldnt be starting at even 30k, and 30k now isnt what it was when you started school.
My suggestion to every one is to find a hustle…something that people need, and make some extra money…cuz waiting for that check every week will only leave you in a vulnerable position. Ask Nigel…he’ll tell you…im sure hes cakin off this site ;-).

Yo listen up…Im going to lace everybody in there area with some game on how to get money. Theres 2 ways…The legal way and the illegal way. Me I have always been an illegal man. Y? because you pay no tax. Ok now if your not familiar with the drug marijuana this probollay isnt for you. What your going to do is , take an empty closet or bedroom in your house. Your going to spend $450 on a 1000 watt hps light , and another 500 on misc items that you will later research. What you will be doing , is turning a space in your house into a garden. Now if you spend at least 1 hour a day online researching how to grow marijuana for 7 days you will be able to , off that 900 dollars turn that into a pound every 14 -18 weeks. NOw a pound street value is anywhere from $3000-$7500 depending on where you live. Me I live in the bay area so prices are alittle bit cheaper due to the fact that humblot county is 5 hours away. So yes my friends that 900 dollar investment will put an extra 3 to 7 grand in your pocket every 3 to 4 months. Or you can be like me and rock out your whole house and make 60G’z untaxed money every 4 months. All I can say I’m thankful 4 the fact that my job is pretty much recesion proof. I work with wild a**, out of control teenagers males givin their parents [usually single moms] a hard time. That will never go out of style and these kids need guidance 4 real. Plus if all goes will I may get a promotion 2 supervisor. We’ll see though. Real talk even if I don’t … God is still good and I’m still thankful. WORD.

Sup Nigel! First of all thanks for posting that Lupe/Jesse Jackson video I sent in. The recession is definitely hard felt everywhere. Even if people say it’s not. It’s effected everything. One way that things have changed for me, I’m not hitting up the malls for gear like I used to. I loooove sneakers, and getting some fresh shirts and jeans now and then. But I’m not out shopping like I used to. That money can go to groceries, since the prices of simple things like eggs and milk have gone up. Thank goodness gas prices have gone down though.

Yeah, shit aint no joke. I’m trying to live legit cause aint no future jail time when u go legit. My freedom is more important than my wallet. But i’m engaged and its damn near impossible trying to plan a wedding or cop a ring for my girl when the cost of living is increasing, but corporate jobs only wanna hook you up with a 1-3% annual raise increase if you qualify. I gotta work a full-time and part time gig, while my fiance works 60 hours a week but only gets paid for 40 hours as a salaried employee. I’ve been out of my parents crib since i was 17 and i’m 25 now. I cant afford to go to school cause i gotta work to pay bills. I got real life bills, kid. No sneakers and designer gear fund. I got rent, car note, insurance, electricity. i get taxed like a mothafucker out here in Atlanta out of my paychecks. so after taxes, insurance, life insurance, i walk away with 66% of my check to take home. We try to live and eat healthy, but its so much more cheaper to eat junk. So at this rate, while i’m tryin to live right as a black man and get married before kids come into play, my pockets say otherwise. Looks like i’ll be engaged for a good 4 years. Times is rough, but good thing my fiance sees and understands that. Otherwise, i’d be broke and alone cause ATL women aint trying to hear from a brother who aint got his finances right regardless of economic depression or hardship

on top of that, me and my girl decided we should trade in both of our cars and just get one car so that way we’d only have one car payment. it took us forever to find a bank that would finance us since all the banks froze up and they all would find the smallest reasons to deny you credit. So not only do you have to watch your account and spending habits, but you gotta make sure your credit is straight, cause credit scores are more important to some banks thank cash. More doors open up when you’re well off, but when you really need help, they all slam in your face

Well, to answer the question I’m doing OKAY. I work in IT managing and maintaining Linux web-servers and I am self-employed. I have had my IT contracts since 2003 so that income is and has been steady. Furthermore, two of my contracts were just renewed with a 10% increase in bottom line income for my pockets. Another one just restructured where the bottom line means more work for myself and my team. A lot more work
So even though I’m okay, it doesn’t mean that I do not feel the crunch of these financial times that are upon us. How can you not right? Along with IT, I am also tapped into the hair biz. It’s funny because recession or not, females are not going without their hair weave or extensions… Funny, but sort of true. I understand where the brother is coming from that spoke about feeling like his MBA was not worth it. Mine is for Entrepreneurship, not finance and I think if I were out looking for a job I would feel the same way about my degrees. However, I think you should remember that when this blows over you will have a degree that is in demand because there will come a point where there is a boom in the banking and finance sector again. Do you have experience in the finance and banking sector already? How about starting your own service as a personal finance specialist? There are so many people who need to understand how to budget their money right now to a degree that Americans are not used too. To end this I would like to offer some suggestions though… More so than anything I think now is a good time for people to start tapping into their natural talents in order to make money. I think it’s also a time where people need to learn to commune and work together. Like for example, I put a ad on craigslist for computer services last month just for personal computer repair in nyc. Based on the market research that I performed on craigslist alone I could realistically count on enough business from that to pay like a electric and gas bill. While that may not be a whole lot, those things are necessities and the jobs could be performed on my free time. Additionally, I never really understand why males can’t find alternative ways to make a dollar. You guys have physical strength to your advantage. You can get some crappy van and start a moving and hauling service. Or females can open a cleaning service. Shit go find some of these damn high priced apartment rental companies with these high ass priced brokerage crap they do in nyc and tell them you will clean all of their vacant apts. I know I might be making it sound all easy… but there are ways you can make a dollar using your natural resources without having a huge amount of overhead. Also, my step brothers really did the moving and hauling thing and got it to a point where they have about a dozen people on their pay roll and then added on carpet cleaning services as well. I have a friend who really does own cleaning business. I’m just saying these things are not out of reach and you can make a few bucks where you schedule these jobs between your other gig or gigs. I’m sorry but I’m a female hustler in every sense of being. Legally that is, and I use all of my natural abilities (except the nasty/adult shit get your mind out of the gutta) to my advantage. I think now is the time to think out of the box because you don’t actually need to be “employed” in corporate America to make some money. One last thing, please respect your finances. Someone said it already but now is not the time to be flashy. Remember that paper money, also known as Fiat has no real value anyway. There has been value placed upon it and it isn’t backed by anything except economic strength. Or the idealism that the government can defend the value of its currency. Remember FDR removed the fact that the usd was backed by gold in order to inflate it during the great depression? Didn’t y’all pay attention in history class!! Just understand that respect all of the finances that you do have is as important as earning additional finances. Good luck
