KRS and Fat Joe said all that needed to be said.
October 6th, 2008 at 5:29 am
I agree with most of what was said, but i’m confused about how the sugarhill gang spoke about sampling. didn’t hip hop delight sample chic’s “good times”?? wasn’t sampling one of the things hip hop has been known 4 since the beginning? theres a lot of classic ol school joints that we all love that were samples, that doesnt take away from the creativity of a song! plus werent they the first manufactured group? they werent even a real crew til the record label put them 2gether. everyone else i agreed with.

How can Fat Joe or Julez Santana talk about what rap lacks when they are part of the problem ? especially Fat Joe smh……
October 6th, 2008 at 6:54 am
F*CK ALL THAT OTHER ISH!
Hip Hop lacks fans who demand more from the artists. Don’t mean to sterotype, but a lotta younger cats just dont care about good, well thought out lyrics.
If the fans demanded it, the labels would stop pushing these fly by night, flash in the pan, clones on us every few months.
Demand more and you’ll get more!!!!!

to larrybirdz
“rappers delight” that song isn’t sampled as you say things are traditionally sampled today.
They actually had a live band play the “good times” break, that’s what he’s talkin about. It wasn’t like what it is today

October 6th, 2008 at 10:19 am
to dchaste
i guess my issue is with him criticizing sampling. sampling has always been a part of hip hop and there are plenty of old school songs that used breaks from other songs. thats not something that started from the new school.
October 6th, 2008 at 10:31 am
idk uh….. maybe talent..lol!!
October 6th, 2008 at 10:46 am
oh no i completely understand larryberdz
i was just explaining what he was talkin about.
October 6th, 2008 at 11:28 am
new school hiphop lacks tupac..when he died so did hiphop
hiphop was never really exciting before him and it won’t after him
hiphop fans just got accustomed to somethin they culd never keep(the excitement tupac brought), now they think they’re entitled to it
lets face it…it all went downhill after pac and it won’t recover..fuck gay ass gay-z and that lameass nigga hidin in the dark under those covers..fuckin comercial ass niggaz that sucked all the realness out of hiphop
October 6th, 2008 at 11:46 am
Jay-Z didnt mess up hiphop homeboy you sound stupid.
October 6th, 2008 at 12:18 pm
^^^ofcourse not ..he just made it cool to only rap about money cars and clothes and fake drug stories…new cats that came out just copied the current lame trend he had going but of course that’s not messing up hiphop..jay-z’s rich and he’s married to beyonce, money got to his head and now he practically acts like an old white man but still how could he possibly do any wrong..the other idiot i reffered to was diddy, don’t even let get me started with diddy..let’s just say they led the way in comercializing rap
October 6th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
I’m sorry but I would expect the older cats to have more to say. What are they talkin about that there was never sampling if anything they did more of that back in the day. And also what do they mean therez too much computer synthesizers…what about Rakim’s song “Melody”…to me that was more original than anything it wasnt sampling to me that is the real essence of what hip-hop is…I’m sorry but I was only feelin what KRS One and Juelz said…I respect sugar hill gang but they wouldnt know because they had their rhymes written and used a sampled beat…to me sampling is suppposed to be something special that bridges the gaps that shouldnt be played out like people are doin right now…
October 6th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
I remember a time when Biggie reigned as the king of NY. Biggie had commercial success but never lacked lyrics. Jay-z on the other hand dumbed it down searching for a hit sometimes. In turn, it opened the door for no-talent having artists to slip through. Nowadays, the old Jay-z is back and coming with the lyrics. The new school be dismissing him as an ol head. Hopefully its not too late, with the resurgance of great lyrical albums like Untitled,Paper Trail,Blueprint 3. I’m a hip-hop fan that demand great lyrics from hip-hop artists. PEACE!!!

niggas like juelz is wats wrong, juelz is a 1 of a kind dude but he can survive off of sayin things like splash and as long as ppl luv it he wont ever have to step his game up. we do have alot of creativity today but it lies with the producers not really the rappers. back then rappers had to spit fire in order to eat, nowadays rapper come in sayin how rich they already are so theres no need to work hard cuz they already “ballin”.
all in all, the vh1 hiphop honors are a breath of fresh air to the hiphop community, sumtimes it sparks arguements but after enough of these shows maybe the newer rappers like juelz learns sumthin extra about hiphop to make his music better. he performing naught by natures “everything gonna be alright” . that song was so deep sumone as shallow as juelz shouldnt be doin it, maybe he’ll surprise me

fat joe is so ass and irrelevant why he talkin?
October 6th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
Technology killed hip hop – Q-Tip
But yeah, everyone in that video had a point, even Juelz excluding that splashing shit. Hip-hop just adapts to each passing decade.
RTNY needs more topics like this for us to discuss, enough of these Tony Yayo/NORE on a diet type bullshit posts.
October 6th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
and so much hate towards Fat Joe LOL
I miss tha DITC days.
October 6th, 2008 at 9:25 pm
Totally co-sign with #3
hip-hop always used samples!!! Hip-hop began with looping Chorus, bridges, and hooks of James Brown, Issac Hayes, and many others. Hip-hop began with the party jams also…
October 6th, 2008 at 11:32 pm
THE ONLY THING I THINK HIP HOP LACK NOW A DAYS IS OFFICIAL FANS. TODAY HIP HOP IS A SUPPORTED BY A DOWNLOADING ERA, PEOPLE NEED TO STOP ACTING LIKE HIP HOP IS DYING DUE TO TALENT LIKE EVERYBODY WAS HARVARD GRADS!! KRS-1, AND THESE DUDES IS GRANDFATHERS OF HIP HOP THEY NEED TO TAKE THERE CANE AND SIT DOWN, MOBB DEEP, NAS, AZ AND ETC…IS CONSIDERED OLD SCHOOL…WTF ARE THEY REALLY TALKING ABOUT??? THEM DUDES DON’T KNOW WHAT PLATINUM OR GOLD SALES IS ABOUT!!! WHY WOULD U WANT TO APPEAL TO A 12 YR OLD???? WHAT YOU WANT TO TAKE IT BACK TO THE ESSENCE 35 YEARS OLD IN THE PARK RAPPING??? YOU’LL DUDE IS CRAZY LET THE YOUTH ENJOY RAP…LET THEM HAVE SOMETHING WITHOUT COMMENTING..CHANGE IS APART OF LIFE…NOTHING STAYS THE SAME..GET A JOB!!!
October 7th, 2008 at 12:55 am
Alot of you ignorant fools so caught up being idiots that you ignore whats being said. I agree with KRS-One and with most of what Sugar Hill Gang and Fat Joe said. Now and days you got artists being half-assed about their jobs and not supplying you with good music. They only want that quick buck and there is almost no meaning in their music. Todays Hip-Hop to me doesn’t have any soul…no feel…and todays rap has no meaning. Its all the same money, hoes, and guns. Back in the day Rap & Hip-Hop was more about having fun, talking about whats going around you, being heard, and entertaining others…hot lyrics, hot beats, and make money…but now artists got lazy. As soon as someone drops a hot single you have other artists trying to bite their style instead of taking little bits and making it their own. Hip-Hop started to die in the early 2000s and by 04 it was put on life support. Right now there are some artists trying to revive it…but at the moment its sinking deeper and deeper into that eternal slumber and may never wake up.
What Hip-Hop needs to survive is for are all these fake artists, trying to make a quick buck, to die so that anyone with real love for this Hip-Hop game can be themselves and shine…rather then thinking I gotta be like Soulja Boy if I want to make money.

What most rappers lack is substance noone raps about anything anymore. Nas is the best all round MC because he could talk about, killing someone, drugs, women, jewelry, cars, politics, and uplifting topics.
The funny thing about people who like Juelz swag and this getting fresh stuff is. Most of those people wear $500 shoes but live in the projects and don’t have a high school dipolma.Your priorities is all wrong. I wear Guccis and pradas too but My parents own their house. And I go to Lehman college. Im 21 and todays youth definetly has no substance and they follow everyone like a herd of sheep.
On another note Juelz sounds like a real N!gger we spalshing we splashing. Read a book you coon.

#21 cuz fat joe is hip hop… he was getting deals and shooting video in 92-93.. one of the 1st puerto ricans to step outside of breaking, graph and djing to emcee… thats why.. #23 exactly… one of the sickest groups digging in tha crates= bigL, fate joe, OC, and AG…
#25 ur the reason why hip hop is dead…appeal to a 12 yr old? man when i was twelve i was listening to dre and snoop. snoop’s 1st joint, real hip hop… if ur 12 now u got solja boy rick ross. stuff like nas aint even directed towards you… real rnb isnt even directed towards 12 yr olds… BET plays Ciara BETJ plays Raheem Devaughn. nobody wants to kick knowledge or provide something new… they just wanna recook which ever recipe worked the last time.
