Mens sales- number one goes to the “trend Setter”
womens sales - number one goes to “good music”
Men buy music based on what they want to see/ be
women buy music based on what they want to hear/feel

I’m not surprised at the Rap album sales. Wayne is the shit. Officer Ross got all of his CO friends to support his album sells. As far as R & B sales…what I don’t understand is how in the hell did Alicia Keys sell so many albums? I bought her CD along with Mary J. Blige on the same day and to me hands down Mary got it and still gettin it after 15 years. Alicia….2 words… elevator music. I like to hear feel good music and Mary got it. You can listen to her shit all the way through. Alicia’s selling albums on looks because I don’t hear what everybody else is hearing. I haven’t heard Keisha’s album yet, but hers are always good as well. She can sing too. I would have thought she would have even sold more albums.

kardinall official(ly) flopped lol, damn what record label he with how they gonna recoupe any money back of that artist smh…

Rick miami 5.0. Sold most of his units b4 bein exposed so until his next album is released no1 knos if pig music actually sales lol

No wonder the Game said l.a.x. His last album, that n.gg. Can shoot ten videos that album stil gonna stay barely wooden lol

Rhianna and chris brown both re released new versions of their albums with up to 4 or 5 new songs.. So thats one reason i think u can xplain their high numbers… Hiphop artist never do that kinda promotion…

LL well the name of his album says it all, hes officially left the rap game lol

Chris browns album was kinda good i cant lie lol

How much did The-Dream album push that was my fav rnb album for a long time..

Usher album was just weak in comparison to future love and sex sounds… And alicia keys i think anyone who actually brought that album would hav been disapointed with the quality…

SMH at the state of the game. But real talk Ice Cube has probably made more money off his album sales then anyone on this list because he is completely independent and probably didnt spend too much money promoting it.

I blame the radio and video shows. They play everything that sounds the same and dont play any diversity. And we all know if you dont see the video or hear it on the terrestial radio, then its not considered a “hit”.

And of course R&B hip-hop is selling better than hip-hop alone. I guess niggas need to start investing in Auto-Tune or every single better have a R&B singer on the hook or it’s a wrap.

Thank god for sattelite…even thou that schitt is starting to sound alot like regular radio.

The logic is this: Albums are a thing of the past. Digital downloads are the present and future. Record labels need to realize that the money is in the internet. I give it another five years and ALL music will only be available online and we WILL have to pay for it. And I’m not talking about this cheap stuff now. I’m talking about the average amount for a CD now.

30.

@boogiboi how’s Wayne the shit at 2.5 mill…???? he went 1 mill in a short week he should be at 5 or 6 million at the least. When 50 GRODT dropped he was 800K first week by this time he was 5X platinum…Jay-Z’s AG is at 1.5 mill it took like 8 weeks for it to go platimum…what I’m basically saying is lil wayne sales slowed up drastically.

On another note..Donnie smh go back home and get a job..
Day 26 damn 348K divided by 4 is 87K..so all ya flopped lol..Solange 32K…might as well released that shit on Koch and made more money. Usher 1 Mil is not bad but your last album was i mill in 4 days….sales are fucked up..I blame downloads..and president bush for having us think twice on spending 10-15 dollars on a CD with no job on a fucking recession. FUCK BUSH!
R&B
Alicia Keys 3.5 mil

LL’s numbers, thats just a disgrace.. 44k??? He should hang it up now! Like yesterday really…

As far as plies and rick ross selling mroe than Nas.. look…Nas’ fan base dont buy his music.. plain and simple.. There has to be way more Nas fans than that… SMH @ Wayne.. being at 2.5 mil.. That’s unbelievable.

With No T.I., Jay, or KanYe albums in tha mix… i think those 3 will take a hard look at themselves if they dont outsell wayne.. and that’s tha truth.

37.

@ Who’s Judging’s comment

I totally agree with you. People that should have made the list didn’t. Alicia better enjoy those sells while she can because her career is tarnished. I read on another blog site that the truth is surfacing about her and Swizzy’s affair. Now she is begging him to save her career. It also states that she is known for sleeping around and stealing other peoples men. She should have thought about saving her career when Mashonda was trying to save her marriage. I always found her a little suspect anyways and I didn’t care for her too much after she made that comment to the media about Pac. People overlook it, but she tries too hard to stay relevant and is an attention whore. She just tries to hide it with that clean cut image. She is not even hip-hop, so why open your mouth to comment on something or someone you don’t know about. But anyway, I bet she’ll have second thoughts the next time she messes with somebody elses man.

GRODT released in an era void of digital downloads. That’s why niggas went platinum without effort and can’t go gold now. Carter 3 is releasingi n a time where I had the album 2 weeks before release on a pirated CD and it STILL is almost tripple plat.

Is that a mistake or i think that keisha is at 1.5M not K, or maybe realtalk is right but anyway, yeah the sales are not indictive of how good a artist is just how much certain people like them, i like nas but i wouldnt dare buy a cd, its a shame i kno, but its free for me to get, so i wouldnt pay, and people did downlaod GRODT, a lot of people, it was that now people just dont want to buy, and yeah lloyd and dream and ne-yo have the best R&B cd’s this year, and Rap ummm. Jeezy, Nas, and i will throw N.E.R.D. in there even tho its not rap

43.
Superman - Hip Hop Fan wrote on September 18th, 2008 at 12:12 pm

“and people did downlaod GRODT, a lot of people, it was that now people just dont want to buy,”

You’re smoking that good shit. In 2003, pirating was not as rampant as now and thats a fuckin fact. Nowadays you and I can download your favorite rappers album from zshare. The options for pirating have increased and are alot more accessible as internet speeds have increased and broadband more attainable.

Morpheus, Limewire, Zshare etc and I’ve only mentioned 3 out of possibly 100’s. The music market from 2003 to 2008 is not comparable, it doesn’t matter how 50cent dickryders try to spin it. Fuck, 50s last album is a monumental flop compared to GRODT and it even sold that much because of the fake beef with Kanye. Even with 50s new release this year he’s starting up a fake beef with Kanye….again. Shows you how the market is.

People don’t magically just don’t want to buy music, its just so much easier to download it now.

mfactor00 wrote on September 18th, 2008 at 1:24 pm

You can’t blame the downloads. Before downloads people were making copies on tapes. Like #47 said, I’ve had a burner since ‘98. Music just sucks now.

49.
Superman - Hip Hop Fan wrote on September 18th, 2008 at 2:51 pm

lol Micah..shut up. I had a CD player when they first came out. I have 2 Blu-Ray players now. 4 HDTV’s in the house. I’m up on my technology, thank you. Oh and you’re wrong.

People used to “buy” bootleg mostly then for 2 dollars or less, now we get it for free. It is the downloads people you can’t deny it. Plus when your music sucks aswell why would I buy buy more than your single when i can download the whole album for FREE.

u clowns missed the point.

50.
Superman - Hip Hop Fan wrote on September 18th, 2008 at 2:54 pm

If you guys are right then why is LLcoolJ flopping with 44k? Isn’t he a “LEGEND”???

Why did G-Unit album flop? Weren’t they going plat easily a few years ago??

Its called FREE DOWNLOADS. You can’t escape it, evidence is all around you.

Pirating has always been around but now its at an all time high. Digital age muhfukas.

52.
PoohBearLubb192 wrote on September 18th, 2008 at 3:19 pm

I didn’t even know you could get the shit for free anymore. Most of the sites like itunes and so forth charge for their downloads and sometimes you have to purchase the complete album depending on the artist. Besides I’d rather buy my CD’s I like to look at the cover from front 2 back.

Lexdiggy wrote on September 18th, 2008 at 4:12 pm

Bootlegging hip-hop has been around since the 80’s with the dual cassette deck. I used to high speed dub tapes of everything I could get my hands on. Before that we used to put two boomboxes together face face and press record on one while the other played the songs. I remember doing that to LL’s 1st album Radio.

I remember buying Geto Boys, ED O.G. and the Bulldogs, Ninjaman, ATCQ and many more from my mobile bootlegger. He walked around Coral Hill’s shopping center with a cassette tape carrying case with everything in it. This was like 1991. CD’s was out but not in the black suburbs of DC-Maryland. Only rich kids out in the deep parts of VA and MD had CD players back then.

It wasn’t until I got my 1st ride in 94 and I installed a CD changer that most of the cats in my hood had even seen a CD let alone get to hear one. I was buying CD’s every week. That lasted a good year or two until the same bootlegger started coming around again with bootleg CD’s. they wasn’t the best quality back ten because the hardware to record was very new. but by 1998 my man Josh was telling me how he can “burn” cd’s on a computer. That was the sole reason why I went out and purchased my 1st computer that fall.Yeah I was getting ready to start college but I wanted it to burn CD’s. You think white kids didn’t already have that technology…bullshit.

That next year Napster was released and it was a wrap. A weak 56k modem so songs were being downloaded overnight. Outkast Stankonia was the 1st time I remember a whole album was on the net before the release date.

Then there was Aimster, Kazzaa, Bearshare, you name it was up for a minute and then shutdown. It wasn’t until this new wave of torrent downloading, zshare, yousendit that the shit really hit rock bottom for labels. but who can you blame….many of the artist/labels deliberately leak their own stuff out there just to build a buzz. So who really is the blame for the low record sales.

Society is just adjusting to the technology that it has access too. do we continue to use horse and buggy to work each day when we can ride in a climate controled subway train.

If they really want to make money, give the album away for free and charge primo for live performances.

now thats real talk

I’m sorry Queen Dee but I cosign with tubb and #10 on this one. It has to be some truth to it. The story just didn’t fall from the sky that shit was surfaced. What’s done in the dark will come to the light. Beauty is only skin deep and God don’t like ugly. Like Whitney said in the movie Waiting to Exhale, if you ugly on the inside your ugly on the outside and what Alicia did was very ugly. Bottomline…she’s a jumpoff whore just like the rest along with the nobody’s. The only difference is she has a name under her belt and a money to go with it . She wanted that weight, so let her carry it. Feed the children!

i’m reading these comments and i got two thoughts:

(1) it would help if there was a “how many weeks out” to compare b/c some albums just came out and it looks like 200K first week is good nowadays.

(2) the argument abt downloading (versus the copying it on tapes back in the day or using ur cd burner) is now you can just download your favorite songs whether they were released or not. Artists need to put out whole albums now. They can’t have just 2 or 3 hot singles and expect people to buy the whole album.

i guess one more thing… weezy sold that much, imo, b/c his fans were supporting for him putting out like a million free mixtapes the year and a half before C3

@ ggproof

I’m not saying she’s not messing with Swizz because it seems plausible. But, I won’t say she’s the cause of their marriage breaking up because she wasn’t linked to him until AFTER his seperation from Masonda (yes, I know he’s still married legally so it’s still wrong in a way). Honestly, I just think Mashonda’s mad because her marriage is over and Swizz moved on to Alicia and tried throwing dirt on her name and trying to garner publicity for that wack ass CD she’s recording in the process.

What I was trying to say about Sandra Rose was that she claimed to know all this other BS about AK sleeping around with other men and women in relationships which I find hard to believe. This sitch with her and Swizz came out, so don’t you think if she has a history of this, she would’ve been found out a long time ago? I mean, Sandra Rose claimed it was her people (mainly her record exec Clive Davis) that kept her ways from getting out, so why couldn’t they stop this, too? ESPECIALLY SINCE MASHONDA IS AN ARTIST ON THE LABEL (at least last I checked). I’m just saying, SR contradicts herself and has ADMITTED she makes alot of her stories up yet people continue to believe her. And if she had this information on AK for years like she claimed, why wait until isht hits the fan to put her on blast? If she’s been doing this, someone should’ve called her out on her nastiness. And judging by what I know of Sandra, she would’ve been the one to do it! So, like I said, I wouldn’t believe that part of SR’s story.

whoa!?!? alicia keys is dope. she is talented and DOES NOT USE GIMMICKS to sale. too bad, she let her self get associated with swizz.

@tubby and Who’s Judging’s,

alicia is good looking, talented and uses NO GIMMICKS to sale records. if she messes with swizz, then it’s wrong for her. it would kill her credibility.

in regards to her being a whore, i bet you both probably can double or triple her “numbers”

nas’s “nigger” album is not mainstream material:

no extra push from MTV to reach white america (see wayne)
easily digestable dumbed down lyrics and simple catchy hooks
808 baselines
mainstream accessible (drugs, sex, violence)

I’ve been reading some of these comments and I’m sitting here like wow. As far as these artists listed some of them just need to hang it up. Some need gimmicks and some need better ones cause it ain’t workin for them. Some of them can barely sale records so who is to guarantee they will stand the test of time and have a long LASTING career. People are making comments about the legends like LL and Nas, Ice Cube and so forth and their numbers, but how can you compare new bootys to legends? People that’s been in the game 10, 20 years plus…. You can’t. What seperates the new bootys and the LEGENDS is, for the new bootys this shit is a career, but for the legends its their life because that’s what they dedicated to game…..a lifetime. Have you ever head of lifetime achievement? That’s the goal that these new artists need to set for themselves. That’s the real test….Consistency and dediction. You never saw LL or Cube say, “I’m gonna retire as soon I strike gold” like some of these artists do once they feel they have enough money to support the lifestyle to their liking. They still in this shit because they love what they do and it wasn’t just for the money. You might ask why these artists feel they still need to be in the game? Because the game needs the legends and they need leaders to help keep it going. They were the one’s to start it and get it this far. They know what it takes to achieve longevitity, which is something the artist of today need to be taught so that hip-hop will still be here and strong for even another 20, 30, 40 years and so forth. Now that I’ve said what I had to say. Keep Hip Hop Alive! I’m out!
