Master P Creates, "Better Black TV," Cable Network
Percy Miller (formerly Master P) announces the launch of Better Black Television (BBTV) a family friendly network that will provide positive content for a black and brown culture that will appeal to all races with a goal to bring people of color a choice when turning on their television. The content on the channel will contain a wide arrangement from health and fitness, animation, financial planning, reality TV, sitcoms, dramas, movies, responsible hip-hop music and videos, politics, sports and entertainment news, educational children’s shows as well as teen and family programming. Production has begun and will be based out of California, New York, Louisiana and Florida. In addition, BBTV is in the process of purchasing local cable channel affiliates across the country.
A lot of people complain about how African Americans are portrayed in the media, but Mr.Miller is actually doing something about it. I hope people from the hood see how he went from the Ice Cream man to the professional positive business man he is now.
More details below
Born in Hollywood, Better Black Television is the brainchild and passion of some of the most diverse, powerful, celebrated entertainers, influentials and trendsetters from the Television, Film, Professional Sports, Corporate America and Music industries. These visionaries all share the common goal of enhancing the current television landscape for this highly coveted demographic currently monopolized by only a few significant providers, with fresh, innovative, uplifting and above all family-friendly entertainment. Envisioned and headed by its Founder, P. Miller, a legendary music, film, and television entertainer as well as world-renowned African-American entrepreneur and social activist, Better Black Television is guided, staffed and supported by a highly skilled, talented, and above all dedicated team of professionals that have been working for more than 5 years to make this dream a reality.
“Better Black Television has been a vision of mine for some years,” said Miller, BBTV’s Chairman & CEO. “I’ve done a lot to promote and change the way messages are relayed to our children and our families over the last few years. Promoting positive content and positive messages is so important to educate and preserve the next generation. Being exposed to positive content is what changed my life. I believe that there is a market in our community for a new diverse network that provides a new brand of superior programming that caters to all aspects of television from reality to original programming. In addition, I’m excited to be able to expose the urban community to a vast array of jobs in the entertainment community that they might not otherwise be privy to. I have a great relationship with BET and MTV and my son and I will continue to do work with them and support their networks. With BBTV, we’re spearheading the initiative to meet consumer demand for family friendly hip-hop content.”
The BBTV Advisory Board members consist of some of the most significant entertainers in Hollywood, professional athletes as well as movers and shakers in the community such as Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Denzel Washington; businessman and Academy Award nominee Will Smith; Vault Load Films President, entrepreneur and senior level business executive, Jim Finkl; NAACP Executive Director Vicangelo Bullock; Professional basketball player and businessman Derek Anderson (Charlotte Bobcats); an award winning, 20-year veteran of the cable television and film industry, Professor Sal Martino; businessman, community activist and founding father of hip-hop, DJ Kool Herc; entrepreneur, businessman and animation specialist, Olatokunbo Betiku; and community activist, Board President of Nailah House Foster Family Agency, speaker and teacher at Trump University, real estate mogul Curtis Oakes.

“We’re extremely proud of our programming that will be airing on BBTV,” said Miller. “It’s extremely important to feed clean, quality, and positive subject matter to our families. We believe TV content can be positive and responsible and still have good ratings with great content. BBTV will offer all kinds of family friendly entertainment that everyone can enjoy. Our mission is to target the new generation of responsible African-American and multi-ethnic English speaking American and family oriented and responsible hip-hop consumers who are taking charge of their families and striving for a better tomorrow.
“I remember Bob Johnson, founder of BET, telling me back in the day that if you wanted to know real estate, you’ve got to hang out with real estate investors. If you wanted to know sports, you’ve got to hang out with athletes. I wanted to know TV, so I hung out with Bob and learned the TV game from one of the best in the business.”
Better Black Television Mission Statement:
Better Black Television (BBTV) is committed to being a leading African-American multimedia entertainment company by establishing a distinct, valued, trusted, and socially responsible consumer brand within the African-American and multi-ethnic, English-speaking marketplace. We plan to accomplish this mission by delivering quality, family oriented entertainment and information to the quickly growing urban consumer base of our target audience through the use of television and Internet resources.

I would watch it. I think it would be a great alternative and balance out some of the negativity that you see on other networks.

August 15th, 2008 at 10:13 am
mr. p miller I have a new found respectt for what your tryin to do, I hope u mean what u say and aren’t lookin to make a quick buck like a pimp turned preacher.
I will support this to the fullest and hopefully this grown man trend in hiphop can really spark a generation we will all be proud of. we should also support whomever sponsors these programs on this network cuz at the end of the day those sponsors run shit. when they see profits rise more ppl will hop on the bandwagon. good luck p
August 15th, 2008 at 10:16 am
This aint about money. P is trying to do something positive for black people. Its a good look. Last year, P and 50 were on rap city together and 50 tried to downplay P’s new image like he wasnt buying it. Its real now. Master P has seen the destruction that “Ugh, Nah Nah Nah Nah” has done to hiphop and now as a responsible black man, he’s trying to fix it. He got the money to do it so now he’s putting it to good use. He even got Romeo involved. Definitely ill. I hated No Limit back when they were out and i was heavy into my NY hiphop. Dude never won me over as a fan, but he definitely got my respect as a black man. GOOD LOOKIN’ OUT, P. U got my support
August 15th, 2008 at 10:22 am
That’s what I’m talking about, Master P thinks big, that’s what we need. I got laugh though, black and brown people, gotta love it.
August 15th, 2008 at 10:37 am
what would happen if white people made
better white tv
or
white entertainment tv
ughh
its 2008 people
August 15th, 2008 at 10:53 am
White people do have white entertainment tv. Its called NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, Lifetime, MTV, C-SPAN, A&E, VH1, Bravo, TBS, hell even BET. Cause at the end of the day, BET aint entertaining me. I’m embarrassed of half the shit i see on there. But it does make some “pigment impaired” corporate people laugh as us and prove themselves right. As black, brown, purple, yellow, red and orange people, we dont really have any channels fully devoted to keeping us informed, keeping us proud, or making strides to show us positive images of ourselves. VH1 Soul is the closest i’ve seen to authentic and genuinely positive portrayal of ourselves in the music entertainment world. Besides that, we get “G’s to Gents”,”I love New York”,”Flava of Love”, “The Parkers”,”106th and Park”, “How I’m Livin’”, “Pimp my Ride” , and (insert random show here). If Master P learned anything from Bob Johnson, its not to sell us out to the corporate machine. Keep it for us, by us.
August 15th, 2008 at 10:57 am
Big ups to Master P

August 15th, 2008 at 11:06 am
i do though think that it is a big move for “P”. HOPE IT ALL WORKS OUT.

#8 as much as I appreciate your attempt to overlook race, let’s not over look the fact that there are the indian and asian channels. They exist because minority representation on tv is very minimal.
white tv, just like white history in school is provided by default.

I feel u P. Clothing about to be at Walmart and now a TV channel? Thats definately the right direction. We need more positive roles which includes positive TV shows. What people don’t understand is that we as a whole need more choices. I commend Percy Miller. Time for a different lane to drive in thats safe.

Hi Hater!! U said Blood Money? America was built on blood money. We try something postivie and this is what u have to say.
What are u are black Bill O’Reilly and McCain Supporter?
good Sly Fox cock sucka!!!
August 15th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
Simpson whoever u are shut the hell up…All the presidents we live under are using blood money to fuel this nation. Even Bill Gates you could say has blood money because he stole Microsoft from Apple. What you’re saying makes no sense cause at the end of the day Bill Gates spends billions of that money saving people. If P. Miller wants to spend his new found wealth to help better his people who are you to judge. No matter how he got the wealth there is always repentance and people do change so stop being an overseer and judging everyone like you’re perfect
August 15th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
P Miller or Master P whoever is a joke why chage you’re name ? change it when you’re in your 20’s not when you’re washed, irrelevant and have already caked off it . P Miller can take his clean lyrics label & good black televison and fuck off with this bullshit this is the dude who was caking off Snoop Dogg, Mystikal and all the other dudes.
August 15th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
@8 and 19
He probably realize that he’s getting older and it’s to make a change and right his wrongs idiots.
Man just because Diddy and Jay are still at the club still selling music clothes and alcohol doesn’t mean that P aint keeping it real.
How many people die from watching a good tv show? Don’t you realize that we are influenced by negative shit? It’s time to make a change whether white or black. Did u know that P. is making more affordable hood clothes that will be sold at Walmart? Even P. knows what kind of the things our ppl do just to look good. We sell drugs and kill ppl in reality and on TV but thats OK right?
Damn man Niggas still living in the box in 2008.
August 15th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
P. Miller got alot of haters.
Hi Haters still talking that 90’s shit. WOW.
P doing his thing and I’m with him. All these fake RICK ROSS niggas and the Game talking suicide. 40 year old rappers with chics dancing all around them selling alcohol to kids? P can’t do anything different at an older age?
Soon as u try something postivie niggas come out of the wood work hating.
WTF Stop Hating!!!Go P get that TV channel cause Baby n Wayne gonna be played out then what are ppl gonna say?
August 15th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
Dont be so close minded about it, kid. Its not just about making money. He got the money to back it up for the time being. Dont forget, this is the dude who had 24k gold on his floors and ceiling in his 33 million dollar mansion in 2000. ITs on Direct TV. Big named sponsors with diversity departments are gonna jump on this. Alot of older minority congressmen and women who are tired of how we are portrayed are gonna back this, so I can see a certain degree of government spending going into the budget of this down the line. I can see Bill Cosby and people of that era supporting this. This is an approach by the older generation to school the new school on making right choices. P’s son is a millionaire and this cat is still going to college and playing college ball over in Cali. They got the right image to pull the right people for this. AJ and Free left BET cause they didnt like the stuff they were representing. I’m sure alot of BET employees are feeling the same. They’re might jump ship too. Not every channel is solely based on entertaining and keeping ni99as dancing. This is also a news channel, a political channel, a financial education channel. If he puts his business plan together the right way, people will support it, i can see it happening down the line.
August 15th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
This is all good, but it won’t last. Media and music is controlled by the younger generation. They’ll be home watching t.v. while the adults are at work and if this network isn’t filled with reality t.v. and one hit wonder videos they’re not going to have any ratings. He’s not going to get any sponsors for commercials either which helps to pay for the t.v. slots/programming because the high paying sponsors are beer, cars, cosmestics - hair and beauty, promotion of white t.v. shows on other networks, etc. which is not what needs to be promoted to the black demographic areas. They would try to use black commercials and actors and there just isn’t enough to hold a network down. They can barely get magazine print ads let alone a 30 second t.v. spot which costs way more.
It’s a great idea, but content isn’t important on paper - numbers are. If those ratings aren’t in, this network isn’t going to last. Look at Oxygen. Positive for women, but adults didn’t support it. Oprah tried and jumped ship quickly because it started to sink.
BET would love to do the same thing, but Blacks TALK more than they WALK so they submit to formatting in order to stay afloat.
Unless he’s not concerned with making money and is willing to spend his last dime keeping this afloat - he’s going to have to broaden his options, tuck his tail in and get some VH1 type of shows on that network.
Bullshit sells people - it’s been driving this country and will continue to run it in the future.
August 15th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
Loving this idea! Hope he executes it well, Would love to see more moguls making things likethis happen
August 15th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
@ Truth B Told
Son, u make nothing but sense. But over time, we got conditioned into buying the bullshit they they’re selling us. My generation grew up on the Cosbys and such but now TV is much much different. We got conditioned and programmed into feeding into bullshit. Well somebody has to let go of their balls and say fuck it, i’m gonna begin the conditioning process of making people interested with values, education, financial education, business savvy, etc… Whether he makes millions or just enough for groceries, at least P can say he stepped out there and started the process. Isnt that parallel to what Barack is doing by stiking the match that will light the fuse to the bomb? Its not gonna happen overnight. But it has to happen somewhere. Yall ni**as sound defeated before the race is even over.
August 15th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
I’m loving your second act P. Miller, you’re make us proud this time around.:-) This is what I’m talking about all these rappers especially backpackers/”conscience” rappers talk a good game and get props for it when their not doing anymore than the Solider Boys of rap. This man is actually doing something some of you have the nerve to speak negatively of it. Listen up kids
PEOPLE CHANGE and in his case it is for the better.Keep doing what your doing Percy hopefully it will galvanize other rappers into action instead of just words.
August 15th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
man, RESPECT to the fullest to P. Everybody talks about doin something but nobody does any walkin. finally we got somebody steppin up and doin somethin about it… but now that P decides to step up to the plate and do some walkin, he got his own people hatin on him not pushin with him? man this shit disgusts me. yall are the same people holdin barak back in this election but the first to complain when somethin negatively affects YOU… shit is sad man, ignorant niggas always holdin us back

“Unless he’s not concerned with making money and is willing to spend his last dime keeping this afloat - he’s going to have to broaden his options, tuck his tail in and get some VH1 type of shows on that network.”
I think that’s what I was saying when I typed the above. It can be done if he’s not concerned with making any money. It NEEDS to be done.
August 15th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
Money changes things. Look what happened to BET and VH1. Channels start off one way, put on that one different show, then it becomes what their whole network is about.

i’ll support it i hope it does well
August 15th, 2008 at 7:51 pm
Everybody wanna talk about how negativity is a problem in the community, ESPECIALLY BLACK AND BROWN COMMUNTITIES. Yet no one wants to do something about it. No one wants to throw race in it, but then again no one wants to talk about why there are not enough BLACK and BROWN people in respectable primetime television shows. We always gotta be somebody’s gangsta, rapper, pimp, pusher, ho, prisoner, killer,…need I go on? Everything is a process. Just cuz you used to be this way doesn’t mean change can’t happen. When you get a family, do you expect to get clowned when you don’t go out every nite to the club, and you’d rather spend time with your kids? Let P do P. He led the gangsta life and was rich before anybody even could fathom a rapper hitting it large like that. He is a forefather of the game, but he can’t change and be positive? Ya’ll givin’ Jay all the “grown man B.I.” props when in all actuality P was gorwing up and giving back without the cameras and media. He has kids who look to him, and I feel that he didn’t want his family to see him dead at 30. Romeo is on an athletic scholoarship at USC for crying out loud, self-supported- w/o daddy’s help!!!!! He hustled, got out (which is the main goal of rappers, right?), and is giving back in a positive way. Who can hate on that? Oh, lazy haters who’d rather see our Brown and Black people destroy ourselves.
August 15th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
And as far as calling it BBTV? Start spreading the racial wealth on other channels and maybe we can get somewhere.
August 17th, 2008 at 2:49 am
Respect P.
I just emailed each and every single white person that asks me what hip hop is trying to do for the community the link to this story…
And you know what?????? It feels SO GOOD to be BLACK!!!!!
