I respect Jay-Z above most rappers in the game simply b/c he demonstrates longevity. Most of his songs are simply outstanding but there comes a time when even the biggest of Jay-Z fans need to examine his bodies of work and think really of the song and not just accept it b/c it’s a Jay-Z track. This track did that for me. The old school ‘86 “Raising Hell” vibe was pretty clever, but it sounds way too mainstream and Top-40 ready. This time Jay-Z doesn’t start a trend but follows one with the “rock/alternative” guitar licks and repetition in content (girls, money-which he states in the song-etc.). All you “real” fans go back and listen to “Reasonable Doubt” and “In My Lifetime” and then listen to this BS and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Everything that Jay-Z puts out is not golden. Most things, but not everything. He succumbs to Top-40 sounds and watered down tracks like everyone else. Now, I’m not a hater and am not “Jockin’ Jay-Z.” I’m just callin’ it what it is.

Remember when quality wasn’t about album sales?
