Why Are Fans More So Interested In Album Sales In This Day & Age?
why the fuck are fans so concerned with album sales? That shit dont make sense to me, maybe im just from another era.
-MR Goose
I hear you man, back in the days I don’t recall worrying how much Biggie & Tupac sold in thier first week. But these days people are eager to hear those first week numbers like they the label or getting a percentage off of every album sold. Some people don’t even check if an album has quality music and judge it based on sales.
So I ask, why are you concerned with how many albums an artist sells?

July 16th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
beacuse it’s an indicator of which artist’s coat-tails most of these sheep should start hanging onto
July 16th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
niggas aint got shit else to do lol
July 16th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Why are we concerned with album sales? Because we like to see our favorite artists do well. Its like asking why are you concerned with how much a basketball player makes? Or why are you concerned with how many points Kobe had last night? Its like a statistic of some sort. Except its music and not sports.
July 16th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
cause 50 cent said so!!! lol
when u really think about it the people who sell the most records (in hiphop)are the ones who appeal to “white america” cause thats who buys those albums…it really has nothing to do with quality
July 16th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
lol @ Doodoobrown, but he’s right! IMO it should be a petty stat though! Many artist have sold a load of sh!t simply based on name or affiliations, not talent and that should be what’s evaluated.

July 16th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
HONESTLY…..NO ONE STARTED PAYING ATTENTION TO THE NUMBERS UNTIL 50 CAME IN THE GAME. HE’S THE ONE THAT INITIATED THE SOUNDSCAN INDICATING WHETHER OR NOT YOU HAD A CAREER OR A HOT ALBUM. CASE IN POINT HOW MANY TIMES DOES HE MENTION IT?
( THINK FAT JOE, JA RULE, D BLOCK, AND SO ON)… AND FUNNY ENOUGH HE’S FALLIN UNDER HIS OWN CREATION BECAUSE G-UNIT’S NUMBERS ARENT VERY GOOD ANYMORE…..IRONY IS A BITCH
July 16th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
people care about the number so we can see that coming day of 50 cent flopping just like this g-unit album did. thats the only time to care about album sales. other than that im just bumping that seeing sounds everyday.
July 16th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
P.S.—ALBUM SALES DONT REALLY INDICATE SHIT…THINK OF ALL THE HOT ALBUMS RECENTLY THAT HAVENT GONE PLATINUM…EARDRUM, LAUGH NOW CRY LATER, FINDING FOREVER, THE COOL, ETC…..
I THINK THE FANS HAVE BECOME JUST AS BAD THE MEDIA NOW…ALOT OF FANS JUST CRITIQUE AN ARTISTS WORK, MEANWHILE THEY DONT HAVE AN OUNCE OF TALENT IN THEIR BODY…
July 16th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Curtis Jackson.
@ #3 Doodoobrown - No, for that analogy you should be looking at how well an album is critically received, not it’s sales. Kobe scoring high cannot be equated to Vanilla Ice selling a lot of albums. Fuck album sales, only the rappers should be concerned with them.
July 16th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Didn’t you just fucking say that Soulja Boy should’ve won best new artist cause he sold more records, if record sales don’t matter and we should only give awards to people with quality muisic, what the fuk u talkin about?
July 16th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
first week sales is like a new competition 2 the fan, its like who can out score the next guy, meaning who is the king of that time in hiphop…truth is if an artist aint selling the artist aint “really” hot…period! People dont just go to any basketball game to watch any regular joe score…nope they want to see the top scoring mvp like kobe verses a lebron….and despite your opinion thats good for basketball, and its good for music, they wanna support a champion…
July 16th, 2008 at 9:25 pm
Good question. I’ve been asking myself the same thing every week. But i guess in todays downloading era, people wanna see which albums are actually worth buying over downloading. And that is still not a good way to pass judgement. Alot of labels purchase the albums for the artists to boost the buzz. I understand the logic behind it. But its still not fair. If The Roots and Lil Wayne came out on the same day, I’m willin to bet that all Best Buys will have more copies of the Wayne album. Presentation in the stores makes a big difference. Itunes availability has alot to do with it too. Like I said, its still not a good way to pass judgement. But alot of it falls on the artists too. Usually, the whole month before the album drops, you see rappers promoting heavy and they all usually say, “I’m trying to sell a mill my first week!” instead of “Yo, i’m trying to get this message to everybody my first week!” We hold those album sales so high cause these dudes is like salesmen, trying to sell you their product direct without you going out and coppin it for free the easy way. So I can understand the desire to wanna sell a mill the first week. Most artists make money doing shows. The Roots perform over a hundred days out of the year consistently. They do this not only out of love of music, but they also have to compensate for lack of music sales. An artist like Kanye, who could sell a mill in a week, can easily sit on his ass and chill because he makes money off sales. He performs in my opinion, not out of love of performing, but so that you and I can say that “he’s the best” I really cant call it. The rap game is kinda wack these days anyway. Fans dont pay as much attention to lyrics, ill verses, style, delivery and all that like we did pre-2000. Neither do most rappers apparently. I guess sales equate to skills in some weird and fucked up way. I dont think so, but I’m no expert. To be honest, I really stopped givin a fuck about sales until the songs I hated most started being platinum ringtones. Ray Benzino and David Mays fucked up at the Source so now we dont even know how many mics albums get anymore. So maybe that transitioned over from 5 mic rationg to a million units sold in a week? So if an ill mc like Mos Def puts together a phenomenal album that only sells 45k the first week, does that mean it would be a 1 mic album by those standards? I dont know, this shit is confusing. Hiphop politics suck. Fuck this
July 16th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
brilliant point of view kross, but i think fans should really just support the artists and music they like and focus on how much money they broke asses r making a week…meaning enjoy the music and focus on there own lives…that wont happen till blogging goes outa style.
July 16th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
WOW @ Krossbreedz.com “its like who can out score the next guy”
So every one starts gunnin!? Money made people start focusin on numbers but the funny thing is that doesn’t indicate what each rapper might make per album! capitalism got heads messed up but at the end of the day people keep goin for it so go for it! But IMO its thinkin like krossbreedz thats gettin sh!t fcked up, quantity over quality all day for the new generation, even mine to a huge extent and I’m not proud at all!
P.s. I’d rather see a bunch of nobody’s play hard team ball together rather than watch 2 guys go one on one with 8 other guys clearin the way!!! (as a metaphor, and literally)
July 16th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
50 Cent
July 16th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
co-sign real talk. enjoy the music! fuck the sales, not who is gettin paid. the only time I’m focusing on the sales is when I’m spending the 15 bucks for the cd. then i just listen to the beats and lyrics and criticize the album/artist from there. but maybe thats cause I’m an 80’s baby…
July 16th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
I really dont care for it.
July 16th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
the writer so bias he just had an article how g-unit is over because of low album sales and now he says why are we concerned about album sales what nas aint doing good this week? to really answer the question it was really all these rappers putting us on about there sales bragging how much they sold and we as fans fell into we over sells the most is the superior artist thats all it is
July 16th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
cuz since 50 cent came in da game and breaks all the record sales things has changed period! but at the same time we lost pay attention to the quality of the album cuz we all wanna re-live the same fever in 2003 when GRODT come out. like in every other things in life we love to see phenomenes happened.. we love to see a tiger woods,a micheal jordan, kobe bryant come out and do phenomenal things, breaks records.. and in the music industry since 50 cent come out i havent seen much of that.

[Intro: T.I.]
Help on the way, help on the way
You say the game in trouble help on the way (fret not I tell you)
Ay, ay, help on the way

Say hello to the man who can save hip-hop
Hey, hey, hey, hey (who single-handedly gon’ save hip-hop, ha ha)
Say hello to the man who can save hip-hop {Just Blaze!}
[T.I.]
They say the game fucked up and the records ain’t sellin
It was bad in ‘06, gettin worse in ‘07
Market over-saturated with all the bootleggin
When it seems better shawty ain’t no tellin
Well call Lyor, give him this message
Then hit Kys’, tell him tell Kevin
Craig, Julie Greenwald, all of them present
That 50 mil’ you gave me was a sound investment
This time around we gon’ sell five, no less than
four on a slow day, call Vegas and bet this
By the way, if you a winner I’m the one you should bet with
J, tell them we the wrong niggaz to bet ‘ganist
Grand Hustle homie I’ma make you respect this
They say the market share’s down so I ain’t affected
Tell the label relax and ain’t no need to stress shit
Just cut the check and I’ll handle the rest, shit
[Chorus: T.I.]
You say the game in trouble help on the way
Don’t worry ’bout nuttin, help on the way
You say the game in trouble help on the way
I got this shit, help on the way
You say the game in trouble help on the way
Don’t worry ’bout nuttin, help on the way
You say the game in trouble help on the way
I got this shit, help on the way
I got the game on lock, standin on top
Say hello to the man who can save hip-hop
I got the game on lock, it ain’t gon’ stop
Say hello to the man who can save hip-hop
I got the game on lock, standin on top
Say hello to the man who can save hip-hop
I got the game on lock, it ain’t gon’ stop
Say hello to the man who can save hip-hop
[T.I.]
You hear my name so hot, I got the game on lock
You niggaz keep floppin, I remain on top
Still the same ol’ me with the same ol’ glock
From the first CD with my Kangol top
I was hollerin “Dope Boy” when I first came out
It seems like e’rybody in the dope game now
Man I told these niggaz that it ain’t gon’ stop
All the hatin gon’ stop or this thang go BAP
Most of these niggaz ain’t slang no blocks
Got a lil’ somethin but it ain’t so hot
Try to sell a record when my shit drop
Get the cover of a magazine when my shit out
No I think not, just think why
would they pick you over I when you ain’t this fly
Better watch yo’ mouth, boy you ain’t that high
The King of the South, no you ain’t that guy
[Chorus] w/ ad libs
[T.I.]
To the fans and the critics think hip-hop missin
This a lil’ proof that hip-hop livin
You can hear a hip-hop top now just listen
Now see hip-hop walk out with six bitches
In the ATL see hip-hop chillin
in a multi-million dollar crib hip-hop buildin
You know how many different cars hip-hop’s driven?
Nigga I’m e’rything hip-hop’s missin
Nigga you is e’rything hip-hop isn’t
My heart and my soul where hip-hop livin
To anyone whoever said hip-hop finished
It can’t be dead while I’m still in it
I’m livin it
And well might I add at that
Ay homie, the real is
This shit is very much alive baby
[Chorus] w/ ad libs
[Outro: T.I.]
Yeah man, record sales
Huh, forget about it, I do this shit in my sleep man
They say bootlegging’s up, sho’ nuff?
I don’t notice, ha ha ha ha
Every album I drop I get better and better man, y’knowmsayin?
Check my résumé, this is no motherfuckin exception
If history serves us correctly
Fuck the climate nigga, I turn the heat up when I want to
Legend tells it… yeahhhhhh
Okay, okay, ay Just
Gather round I’ll run it down people (we did it again baby!)
This how it’s gon’ play out, down to the wire baby
It’s gon’ be a photo finish (I don’t know what you expected there)
Just little ol’ me man, ha ha ha
If you don’t like it man you better get your pistol ready man
Time to kill yourself right about now

We went from a bunch of people banding together for protection and enlightenment to a bunch of monkeys gathered simply to make appearances… and RnB has always been black music!?!?!

July 16th, 2008 at 10:54 pm
I don’t understand why people blaming everything on 50 Cent. How does he comes in that topic. How can you blame 1 person for the state of Hip Hop and Record sales. Personally, i didn’t bought an album since Graduation and Curtis, and I bootlegged the rest. If y’all sayin’ that we, the fans, care about first week sales is because of 50 Cent, y’all dumber than I thought. If one person is able to change your mind and perception of something, you all stupid. I’m not sayin 50 Cent didn’t play his part, but since he came out big with Get Rich or Die Tryin’ and The Massacre, his feeling was that record sales are important.
July 16th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
Records Sales =/= Quality
Soundscan shouldnt even be stats for the general public. I mean… it only matters to the execz and rappers
July 16th, 2008 at 11:30 pm
I thinks its because so many of these “rappers” see rap music and hip hop culture in general as a culture as a hustle. The majority of the mainstream rappers in the game claim to be hustlers and even goes as far saying that this is their hustle. Master P said one time, “fuck how the record sounds, as long as i promote it right”. so when these “hustlers” sell a significant amount of records, they feel to need to proclaim that, and to them, all those records sold = a good album. so the fans, after hearing about all these boasts about how much albums are sold, feel the same way, good record sales = good album.
July 16th, 2008 at 11:33 pm
YOU ALL STUPID!! ALL U NUMBER WATCHERS…..WHO THE EFF CARES???
YOU BUY THE ALBUMS THAT YOU LIKE AND THATS IT, WTF? YOU ALL TRYING TO BE INDUSTRY NIGGAS?? NO, NO, NO, Y;ALL GOT IT EFFED UP….WHAT THE HELL EVER HAPPENED TO THE “FAN”. HIP-HOP AINT DEAD, THE FUCKIN FANS ARE…..DAMN SHEEP.
July 16th, 2008 at 11:38 pm
Rocko… good point! I meant to say since the No Limit-Cash Money beef they been talkin bout numbers of sales so curtis ain’t totally to blame for that, not even mostly actually…
Juny, killin’em… GREAT POST!
P.s. Undercovermc i’m f’n wit you too!
July 16th, 2008 at 11:48 pm
because in the age of the internet with people downloading everything its a much more impressive feat to got plat then it was when biggie and tupac were out..tho i agree album sales are no indicator of how good the album is these days…(carter 3 cough cough)
July 17th, 2008 at 12:25 am
@ #10
Its equivalent of a stat in sports. Not a important stat but a stat nonetheless. Its like the stat of who leads the league in 3 point shooting? Its not an important stat.
So what do album sales really mean? Does it define talent? No not exactly. However, if you look at the highest selling artists in hip hop who do you have? Fugee’s, Jay-Z, Outkast, Tupac, Eminem, Dr. Dre and Notorious BIG. You tellin’ me these cats are garbage? Stats don’t define a artist but the highest selling artists in hip hop also happen to be the most critically acclaim. Cats like Hammer and Vanilla ICE? They had a year run. They had 15 minutes. These cats had careers and they’re the highest selling artists in hip hop.
July 17th, 2008 at 12:51 am
Jay started that platinum selling shit. He made it, to where if you didn’t accomplish that your nobody. He realized that record companies is only respecting the artists who can go platinum.
July 17th, 2008 at 1:05 am
“I hear you man, back in the days I don’t recall worrying how much Biggie & Tupac sold in thier first week.”
Our shit’s going triple and four-quadruple
(take money)
2Pac - Hit’em Up
Rappers always cared about album sales just 10 years ago you were more of a casual fan and now you run one of the biggest rap blogs on the net so you’re more of a player in the industry and concerned with the business. 13 year old kids today don’t pay attention to Wayne’s soundscan either
July 17th, 2008 at 1:09 am
@ Mic Sorc
The Roots and Wayne did not come out the same day. Wasn’t even the same month.
Kinda shows you the job Def Jam is doing for promotion though….
July 17th, 2008 at 1:18 am
“Why are fans more interested in album sells in this day and age”…Well i think the quality material in an artist album reflects through their album sells. But it seem like fans don’t even care about the quality material they just care about album sells. I also think that album sells come with how much effort creativity and uniqueness that a artist can put into their album. But it seem like fans don’t care about that either they just care about album sells. I think fans care more about album sell when it’s really about the quality material. I think fans are entertained by album sells that they don’t even give a fuck about quality material. It like fans judge albums base on album sells and that attract fans they get addicted to how much a album can sells. And then the next step or the outcome is for fans to ponder forgetting less about the quality materials. And in my opinion i think thats the reason why fans are so concern and interested in album sells then the quality materials in an album.
July 17th, 2008 at 1:18 am
@ TC.. Mic Sorc said IF they came… Not that they DID
Jus clarification…
And Mike and Doodoobrown are talkin music out the azz right now… jay started that platinum sellin sh!t? I guess hammer came after jay…lmmfao! Speakin of hammerman he had 15 minutes? real talk he was the jesus for these cunts out here now, i hated dude back in the day then grew to respect him as I got older. He was almost single handedly the man to transform rap from an underground art to all out commercial… Commercial, cartoons, sellin millions upon millions of records based on dance songs and what not! Everyone might not dance like dude but they do plenty of the other thing he did without the social backlash he received!!!
July 17th, 2008 at 1:57 am
It’s simple: because it gives people confidence in their purchase. Buy the Carter 3, It’s the ‘cool’ thing to do…a million people did the first week! golly gee!

I dunno..becuz its 08′ n we live in the Information Age?? wikipedia google soundscan is a mofo friend lol?? who knows g!
July 17th, 2008 at 2:51 am
Maybe because 50 CENT started bragging and boasting about record sales after “Get Rich” dropped. Ever since then, fans have a lot more interest in the Sound Scan.
July 17th, 2008 at 5:19 am
People use it to pop shit
July 17th, 2008 at 5:31 am
^^^^^^ ding ding ding ding ding ding!
You won the grand prize!!!
Thats a great post though and uhhh they use it to cover the fact they have nothing to say…
July 17th, 2008 at 6:03 am
i don’t understand why people care so much about album sales, if a album sells alot don’t make it a classic or good for that matter, case in point the masacre. i think another thing that is messed with most rap fans is that if you like 1 rapper then you can’t like another, e.g. 50 cent/ G unit and Game. I don’t get why people need to stick up for artists so much as if there getting a percentage of their album sales
July 17th, 2008 at 6:18 am
i see you fam…
It’s because folks are “grown n sexy” but not mature and elegant!
when you’re mature you don’t have totake sides like that you can talk it out and come to some common point!
July 17th, 2008 at 6:33 am
Life can be ironic sometimes. It was 50 Cent who threw GRODT sales in other rappers face and was rating himself as King because of it. He then said that if The Massacre doesn’t sell more than his first album, he’s going to consider it as a flop. He had a battle with Kanye on who will sell the most, which he all know he lost and renigged on his word. As of now, he’s saying that he’s one of today’s rappers that can sell a million in one week. Even on that Joe Budden track, he states that it was 50 who made niggas look at the numbers.
Do you see the irony yet? Why the fuck is it mostly the G-unit fans who are saying fuck album sales when your hero is the one who caused this? Is it because karma is a bitch and the same way he threw his successful numbers in other rappers face, his latest flop is being viewed upon the same way?
July 17th, 2008 at 6:38 am
@53, real talk I think it was caused by that East Coast/West Coast rivalry and that King of New York shit. Back in its prime, it was rare to find a nigga saying they like both Pac and Biggie. It’s either or. With New York, if you like Jay, you shouldn’t like Nas. If you like D-Block, you shouldn’t like State Prop. If you like Dipset, you can’t like another crew. Shit is retarded but that’s how it’s going to be for a very long time.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:36 am
I agree 100% sales dont mean talent.
If they did then Britney Spears must be the most talented “artist”???
July 17th, 2008 at 8:18 am
i never understood this its like quality dont matter fans caring about how much a rappers sells is crazy now the rapper and the company should care if anyone does this shyt only happens in rap bottom line is if you care about how much money someone else is making and they not breaking bread with you thats crazy i think its a way to defend wackness i remember my boy asked wat i thought about lloyd banks hands up single i was like shyt is wack yo homeboy didnt say anything about the song all he said was i bet u his album goes platinum im like damn defend the song lol to me it seems like most people look at this game as a business rappers and fans included people will know how many albums 50 moved but could care less about things they really should be concerned about i like the music dont care how many albums nas moves i like basketball dont care how much money garnett makes get it ?
July 17th, 2008 at 8:48 am
REALTALK YALL NIGGAS IS FLIP FLOPPERS FOR REAL YALL POST HELLA STORIES ABOUT THE G UNIT ALBUM NOT SELLING COPIES AND HOW LIL WAYNE OUT SOLD THEM IN HIS FORTH WEEK ( BUT IM NOT HATE’N ON YOU THAT SHIT WAS FUNNY ) BUT TO COME BACK AROUND AND BE LIKE YOUR NOT CONCERNED IS BULLSHIT…. I CHECK THE ABLUM SELLS WHEN NIGGAS COME OUT THERE MOUTH AND LABEL THERE SHIT GONNA PUSH THIS OR THAT NUMBER THAT WAY YOU CAN ASK THEM QUESTION ON WHY THERE SHIT FLOPPED LOL
BUT THE BOTTOM LINE IS GIVE US GOOD MUSIC FUCK THE SALES LETS BRING THAT REAL HIP HOP BACK …
on a side note alot of people are saying the nas album is crack or its betta then lil wayne or its the album of the year so far i think its a crazy album my self to but
NIGGAS GET OFF YA FUCKIN ASS AND BUY THE SHIT!!! MAKE A FUCKING STATEMENT CUZ AT THE END OF THE DAY NIGGAS GONNA FEEL LIKE A ALBUM FLOP CUZ IT DIDNT DO NUMBERS SILLY ASS CLOWNS
July 17th, 2008 at 9:03 am
truth is album sales don’t really mean shit! Take a look at it Jay-z, hardly ever sales a milli the first week! Still is the best….. Nas has never did a milli the first week…. Still is one of the best…..The difference is they have a stable audience. So stable that they are bootlegg in large amounts….So large that it affects they album sales. Who in the hell gonna bootlegg Soulja Boy, Piles, or any of these other dudes….. Jada said it the best only hot niggas get bootlegg! The rest of these dudes slide threw wit that bullshit. Not taking anything away from there creativity, but music wise they make radio hits…. Which is cool sometimes…. But they never could get the respect that cats like jada, ricky ross, jeezy, fat joe, scarface, ugk, busta, jones, or people in the game who real Niggas ride to….. Because people buy albums for way more reasons than quality music.
Top Reasons People Buy CD’s
1. Because of the so-called first week sales
2. Because they like the cover
3. Because they heard the artist was dissin another artist
4. Because of over advertising
5. Because you really like the artist material
Notice liking the material was last. Unfortunately the radio and TV dont play the artist that are making quality music….they play the so-called “Hits”
Definition of a “HIT”
:A record or song that has the potential of mass appeal, not necessarily longevity.

Terror..
Yeah 50 Started It..But Sells Shouldn’t Be A Measure Your Perception Of Quality Music..Or Personal Perception Of That Album..
Sells Matters In Terms Of Success..
Plus Sells Are The Only Facts About Albums..
Legends..Classic Albums..Quality Music..Jay Won..Nas Won..Are All Peoples Opinions..Those are Not Facts..No One Can Confirm This?? You Can Get People To Agree With U..But That’s..Popular Belief..
50 Changed The Game With GRODT..He Sold OUT THE GATE 13MIL..And The Massacre Sold 1.4Mil in 4Days..He Did things That Hasn’t Been Done..That Why He Runs His Mouth..Cuz He Can..If U Cant Beat It..Shut Up..That’s How He Feels..
Now Lil Wayne Has The Juice..
But It Works Against Him..
Cuz He’s Been In The Game So Long..
It Basically Validates His Career..
RealTalkNy..I Ain’t Getting Into That Why U Care Shit..
Same Reason Why U Care..
That’s The Day We Live In..Y’all Niggas Stay Talkin That Back In The Day Shit..What U Doing Today??
Plotting Niggas Downfall..Then Wanna Bring This Shit..GTFOH..

these are times we live , if an artist has an hot album but went totally under the radar , he’s a flop. if young turd, or lil shitty spits some rambled garbage its hott. plus the pressure most artist face , i believe u have to sell 300-500 k just to b given another album is crazy. u got folks who never went plat in they career and all they do is push out solid album. but who cares bout lyrics. most artist sacraficed lyrics for quick buck and it s bittin them right on the ass .

If being a great hip hop artists was based on album sales Vanilla Ice MC Hammer kriss Kross Marky Mark would be some of the greatest rappers of all time.
July 17th, 2008 at 11:12 am
But Vanilla Ice, Marky Mark, Kriss Kross and Hammer aren’t the highest sellnig artists in hip hop. Jay-Z, BIG, PAC, Outkast and Eminem are. They’re garbage huh?

Truthfully it IS a stat. It IS like Kobe scoring points. But obviously just like Kobe scoring a gang of points it isn’t the stat that wins the championship. Also, record sales USED to define very generally how relevent an artist was. And most importantly, the more relevant your favorite artist is the more your going to have an opportunity to hear from them, that is, more budget for music videos, more feature guest appearances and so on and so forth.
July 17th, 2008 at 11:43 am
i think we all knew the answer to your question without actually replying for a comment.
It’s no secret that no one gave a shit about how much a record sold until Fifty started to publicly drop names/numbers on whos doing what as far as sales are concerned.
July 17th, 2008 at 11:48 am
these days its just a reminder of how bad the industry is right now. im glad someone could sell a millie in their first week, tho the album was kinda booboo.
July 17th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
Numbers are important. And during this day and age with all the fronting and lying becoming the status quo. Numbers are helpful indicators of exposing bullshit. It doesnt make your album hot all the time but it does show a little validity to some of the claims these cats are making.
July 17th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Album sales dont make a classic album… Who actually believes that tha carter 3 album sales match up to the quality of the album musically? LIL WAYNE along with tha carter 3 is the music equivalent to the ipod… Packaged better than any other mp3 player but doesnt make it the best mp3 player on the market. Branding is king. Playstation generation, ipod generation and now the lil wayne generation… Kids are buyin into the lil wayne brand because its COOL… Lil Wayne tha Carter 3 = STYLE OVER SUBSTANCE.
July 17th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
cuz niggas care
i mean..is that a problem?
mostly cuz of the haters really
if a nigga put out a solid album…haters gone say..”but how much did it sell”
“niggas lie, bitches lie, numbers dont”
so that’s why sales matter
niggas can say how good their shit is
but if nobody buys it…then that dont really matter too much
unless you tryna be poor and claim you doin it just for the sake of doin it
July 17th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
the funniest shit is yall nerds thought sales mattered when kanye was goin against 50
but now that a nigga yall dont like (lil wayne) sells big numbers
its back to “sales dont matter”
i bet if lupe went double plat in 5 weeks
yall would be sayin sales matter
July 17th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
@#3
You’re correct, Homie, sales are like points, but a tight album is like wins. At the end of the day it should be about wins or a tight album. These cats like Wayne are dropping 40, 3, 0 but getting blown out by the Nas’s of the world who only get you 18, 7, and 5 but are hoisting the trophy.
July 17th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
Oh and numbers do lie, they lie alot. For all we know Young Money/Cash Money bought 500k copies. Numbers can be inflated and usually are.
July 17th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
I hear you man, back in the days I don’t recall worrying how much Biggie & Tupac sold in thier first week.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
DUDE, HOW OLD ARE YOU???? I’m 28 and I remember so how come U don’t remember Mr. Media man?!!! I always have!!! I DISTINCLY remember in “2 Live and Die in LA” 2Pac tellin (what was 92.3 The Beat)and all the popular radio stations “Thanks for makin’ my album go quatroopal, quatrople (sp) Platinum” Everyone knows that he eventually went 5x platinum!
Jay-Z is VERY responsible for the glorification of album sales and even broke it down to the difference in prices of singles in “Imaginary Player” “Your single was 99 cents, mines was FOUR BUCKS” They use it a as a form of clout and a way to distinguish themselves from us. Ever since rappers started using it as a form of clout, we started caring. They started with the chains, then the cars, the women, then the mansions, then the “gangster” personna and when we had heard enough of that, then they started playin’ us with album sales angle because they are running out of ways to distinguish themselves from “the regular folk”.
ONLY DIFFERNCE NOW IS THE THAT IT’S ALL COMMING BACK TO BITE THEM IN THEIR ASSESS…..ALL OF THEM!!!!!1

^^^^^^^^^^
This is VERY true. A certain percentage of ALL of the albums sold are bought by the company.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
I’m sure Jay-Z was mentioning sales way b4 50 said it but people love to jump on the anti 50 band wagon, but I dnt know why people care sales so much most of my favourite artists they don’t sell well but as long as their album is good I will bump but I guess people like to see their favourites do well. But seem go on like they are getting a cut Its like if insert artist does well him and his fans win and its like fuck the haters.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:06 pm
Because Men lie women lie numbers dont! Thats the only reason Album sales are a weapon for the artists!
Especially if u sell like the greatest rapper alive!
Weezy F. will sell 3 Million copies! Booom!
July 17th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
By the way belive me no record label in the world would by 500000 copies of his own artist, thats big bullshit dude.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
becuz it used to sound good in arguements about who’s nicer
its like a ball player scoring average. even if his game is tight, u still beasting to see his stat line. and if he shot 6/30 wit 2rb and 1ast, thats ammo for the arguement.
if a nigga is not nice, but puts up good numbers, u might just watch him next time out.
and if u buy an album and u think its hot, u hope that artist sells alot of records, so he can continue to put out quality music. we all know if your favorite artist flops, he might not drop no more albums so we eager to see those numbers
July 17th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
Everybody was selling records back in the day but now because of leaks and albums being a click away #’s are more than #’s were back when Pac and Big were out. Plus those are legendary artist. You know what you can pretty much expect from those cats on a album. Its like the superstar on the team ie: Jordan, Magic, Bird ect. You know they gonna go out give you a certain about of points, assist, rebounds ect. But the other cats gotta put up #’s. So now that anyone can DL a album or buy it while they get a haircut then the numbers are a little different.

How I curse the day when an Artists “hotness”
is determined by ones record sales,
that’s just sad.. and stupid. Only in America Baby!
