Plies’ Criminal Past Now In Question?
The witch hunt for made up past histories by rappers has now moved on to the, “Definition of Real,” Mr.Plies. HipHopDX did an extensive search to see if he was arrested for anything substantial in his life.
HipHopDX has obtained documentation from the state of Florida that lists the “definition of real” rapper’s first real run-in with the law to have not taken place until two years ago, on April 12, 2006, when Plies – real name Algernod Lanier Washington, born May 22, 1976 – would have been on the eve of his 30th birthday and just beginning his ascension to his current status of gold-certified rap star.
But there are the occasional past tense references to what appear to be claims of his own criminal activity. One glaring example can be found during his lament on the suffering his alleged criminal activities caused his mother on “Runnin My Momma Crazy,” in which he recollects: “Remember the nights, me sittin’ up in a cold cell/I’m wakin’ ya up out’cha sleep, it’s me callin’ you from jail.” While passionate, his verse’s claim that he was ever in a “cold cell” now appears to be untruthful, as according to the FDLE’s report Plies was never in jail for any period of time prior to 2006.

Too early to tell on this one, I’m sure Plies will make a response if the story becomes popular online. Buy anyway props to Plies for creating a non-profit organization.

Plies has a BS Degree, doesn’t he? That’s what up. It’s quite foolish to think most of these new rappers did what they claim in they rhymes. It’s just music, Ross might of been a CO but the production and music on his last record was nice.
It’s just rap but 2 bad rap’s current fanbase will call them guys phony. Plies got a degree, even though he talks like he came from the jects, homeboy was probably str8 middle class. I just hate the way his label putting that goon picture out there to advertise him, YOUNG BUCK DID IT 1ST

July 28th, 2008 at 8:49 am
first off, i would never buy a plies album but
you know what tho?
plies gets a pass cause he’s actually tackling social issues in his tracks and i see him as a kinda messenger of his hood, speaking for those with no voice.
he’s got tracks about the prison industrial complex among other things. i ain’t no fan but plies has a broader message..most of our favorite rappers do that, ain’t no thang
ross was pure egotistical, self-indulgence…so he deserves whatever blow his career takes from here.

DAMN IT IS NOT LOOKING GOOD FOR RAPPERS FROM FLORIDA RIGHT ABOUT NOW….FIRST RICKY ROSS NOW PLIES..BTW AM I THE ONLY PERSON THAT DIDNT KNOW HE WAS 30? DAMMMMMMMMNNNN. I don’t know where the exposure is. I doubt any of you people listened to any of these rappers lyrics and tried to analyze if they really did all that they purported or were ever that gangster. If the music’s good move on.
July 28th, 2008 at 9:27 am
Who gives a dayum…..I would like you to expose them all ….especially the ones with no criminal background…so the KIDS today will know and understand that you dont have to be a criminal to be successful ….I dont understand the attractiveness that the public have for niggas that are drug dealing murderers…It’s one thing to me the rap about that stuff…its just songs to me…but its another for the public to actually think theses niggas are what they say in their music…are we really that closed minded and gullable…and for HIPHOPDX…I love the site for the new music postings..but your staff really need to get a fuggin LIFE…and stop diggin up dirt on other niggas….dayum how gay is that! U might get shot for attempting to expose these drug dealing criminals true background for ruining their careers…that is what you are attempting to do right?? I am still going to buy anybody that makes a song that I like and enjoy…I dont give a fugg what you use to do or you never done…except for rapping KIDS….

July 28th, 2008 at 9:52 am
Who cares if the nigga did this stuff or not. If he didn’t then he has a good imagination. Which is still entertainment. I am not into the Keep it Real syndrome from a criminal perspective. It’s enough black men with criminal records they can’t shake. This is entertainment not reality nothing these cats do is reak from the money they claim to make to the imagination.
July 28th, 2008 at 9:55 am
<–not a Plies fan, but he does speak alot of truth. and he doens’t even come off as a “goon” type to me. so, i don’t see a problem. just tired of these niggas thinking they need a “back” story to they careers. wtf wrong with these dudes? spit realness. please. that lyin shit is out. we in the age of information, you WILL be exposed whether the artists or the fans like it or not. i hope this encourages future emcees to be as real as possible…..im seein a revolution in hip-hop lately and i predict progress. jenny jones should be next with this “exposure explosion”….hahaha
July 28th, 2008 at 10:11 am
not a fan of his but you can figure that was from being a juvenile you know you wont see anything of a juveniles record unless in would contain murder or something like that
July 28th, 2008 at 10:20 am

July 28th, 2008 at 10:38 am
SO HE SOFT CUZ HE NEVA BEEN IN JAIL???FUCK OUTTA HERE BUT IF HE LIED ABOUT BEING IN JAIL BEFORE HE WAS FAMOUS THEN HE FAKE…BUT IT DONT MEAN HE SOFT…GET IT
July 28th, 2008 at 10:45 am
…my question iz; why intelligent MC’z are not popular…to me it just means that the culture of black music and black america are in general skin-deep and superficial…however pac and biggie paved the ways in both directions (#19)…while biggie spoke on real situations, on his last album he started to glorify the gucci dis and fendi dat…now an artist can sell entire albums by glorifying their acquisitions aka idol worship…
back to the ? at hand…iz it lack of education to understand intelligent rhymes, market dictation, peer pressure, or just the ease of not having to think too hard, basically laziness…
July 28th, 2008 at 11:12 am
Glad these fake rappers are gettn exposed…may encourage them to start bein more real..So inturn exposing them may save Hip-Hop!
July 28th, 2008 at 11:28 am
all plies albums consist of half real goon thuggish shit, or really get on some supadupa soft shit for the ladies…aint no middle ground, im not knocking his music even though its gimmick and most of his songs your average male can relate to if you get gurls, but the super goon shit to a certain extent could come off as believable at times but hes just tellin a story but im simply not surprised at this expose on plies
July 28th, 2008 at 11:41 am
I actually had a discussion with my friends about Plies this weekend. This man is actually a genius. He probably sat around one day and thought, “With the state of Hip-Hop today, how many people will go out and buy an album full of complete ignorance?” Then he created this character, Plies, which is a misspelling of a hand tool. People bought into it, and now he writes songs about sitting in people’s bushes and people still buy his albums.
July 28th, 2008 at 11:50 am
Plies isn’t the only rapper who has displayed fakeassness…
I just don’t understand y rappers feel the need to lie about their past on being n jail selling drugs r whatever it may b…let me say I’ve been to jail and ain’t nothing pretty about it…Never sold any weight but was around it all my life…so that made alot of ppl think that I did because some of the ppl I was affiliated with but not at one time did I lie about push’n weight because I felt that their was no need to because that wasn’t gonna make ppl like me more if anything they would dislike you instead of like u…wit that being said 2 plies who wanna b a goon and a ex con and all that other bull shit…work on trying 2 speak properly during an interview and making a complete sentence, instead of trying to be something you’re not….504 all day
July 28th, 2008 at 11:52 am
