New Nas Interview With Complex Magazine

Complex: Kanye says that you are the greatest rapper of all time. How does it make you feel when people call Lil’ Wayne the best rapper alive?

Nas: Oh man, good. I only feel weird when you’re saying that about me. I think Kanye West saved rap. I think Lil’ Wayne is showing there is a future for all kinds of artists to continue doing this. You know, I love it.

Complex: Who in the game still excites you?

Nas: Kanye, OutKast, Eminem.

Complex: Is this your last album?

Nas: This is definitely not my last album. I’m going to do this shit until I’m 70, until I can’t fucking talk.

I know what Nas means (re: Kanye saving rap), and, in many ways, I agree. His soul beats saved Jay, and made Blueprint the classic it was. And he hasn’t rested since. The kid ‘Ye, regardless of what you may say or think about him, has been necessary and unequivocally important.

Everyone that commented above me explaining your theories about how ‘Ye saved Hip hop, you are ALL wrong.

NaS is just fucking returning the sentiment. He’s showing humilty thats all. “I only feel weird when you’re saying that about me. I think Kanye West saved rap.”

Kanye is one of my favorites but do you think NaS would really come out and say that shit about him if ‘Ye didn’t call him the greatest first?? NOPE.

Also, good to see NaS appreciates the #1 rapper right now.

Kanye is one of the hip hop artists to sell big with “true” talent and originality….which is what hip-hop is all about.

The Graduation may not be a true “hip-hop” album like KRS-ONE said….but CD and LR are definitely hip-hop albums and Ye decided to do something musically different and it turned out insane.

TERROR wrote on July 10th, 2008 at 3:11 pm

1st of all kanye aint save shit. how hes original. what do he do different. his 1st hits came from ther ppl shit.

21.
Holla wrote on July 10th, 2008 at 3:16 pm

Kanye is good for hiphop. A dude who doesn’t live up to all the stereotypes of how a rappers should act, rap about and dress. Kanye is doing his own thing both musically and the way he carry himself. He brings something different to the game and has become very successful not only in America but all over the world. Kanye is a huge international star and that’s very good for hiphop music and the future.

22.
Superman - Hip Hop Fan wrote on July 10th, 2008 at 3:27 pm

@ 19, you probably a G-Unit fan. Kanye is orginal and very creative. Aslo a true artist. I say Wayne revatilazed hip hop more than anybody else, him and Kanye are pretty damn important for hip hop right now.

Ahijah wrote on July 10th, 2008 at 3:34 pm

Good to see him give Eminem props & Outkast because when people say the south sucks people forget about Outkast like they suck.

24.
Jimmy wrote on July 10th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

Are Outcast back together working on new material? I’m kind of sick and tired of Andre 3000 whole style and the fact that he’s more interested of doing weird solo projects. I want the old Outcast back

25.
Paper wrote on July 10th, 2008 at 4:30 pm

kanye is gay tooo tight pants wearing muthafucka..

26.
TERROR wrote on July 10th, 2008 at 4:30 pm

@ #21, fuck you bitch! Ain’t nobody a g-unit fan ya heard. Kanye ain’t original all that sampling is all bullshit. And that all he does is sample that shit ain’t creative. Kanye never had a classic and all his hit are samples. I really wont be surprised if he sampled Nas’s old shit. Kanye should not be up there with Outkast and Em. Matter of fact Em shouldn’t even be up there being that he rollin with 50. And i hate 50 with a passion.

27.
TERROR wrote on July 10th, 2008 at 4:36 pm

Once again #21, “super-hot-dog-hip-hop-fan”.. fuck you for calling me a g-unit fan you bitch you lucky this is the web and not the street or i would of fuck you in yo ass.

Hi Hater! wrote on July 10th, 2008 at 4:51 pm

it just proves that Em is definitely top 5!! Yall favorite rappers (Jay, Nas) are in love with that guy!!!

Em needs to drop “King Mathers” and have Nas and Jay on it! That would be G-R-E-A-T

wicked wrote on July 10th, 2008 at 5:21 pm

i pray to god that Nas is still rhyming 30 years from now.. Please keep your word Nas.. I want to have like 30 different albums from son.

Pounce wrote on July 10th, 2008 at 6:12 pm

Nas is a smart dude, I think he maybe king of the subliminal msgs actually. I took this as a jab towards wayne lol. Maybe im reaching though.

“I think Lil’ Wayne is showing there is a future for all kinds of artists to continue doing this. You know, I love it.”

This stems from the verse he and wayne did on that rich boy track a while back. Nas definitely king of subliminals.

#26 you stupid.

regardless of where he sampled his beats from, what can you say about his lyrics?

those are HIS.

and back to the beats, i’ve heard a lot of soul beats that have been sampled, but none of them come alive like kanye’s do.

other producers get a hot sample, and put simplistic patterns over it, and it just sounds “sampled”….but kanye’s are reinventions.

Slim wrote on July 10th, 2008 at 11:06 pm

I don’t think Ye saved hip hop, i think he maintained it, he’s just fresh air in the room. Nas is not a hater, he congratalates when its due. Unless your music suck, but thats another story. One love to everybody.
