Album Review: G-Unit - Terminate On Sight

tos
G-Unit
T.O.S. (Terminate On Sight)
G-Unit/Interscope Records
3/5

G-Unit’s follow-through in delivering an album that caters to their core fan-base proves to be a move that both helps and hinders their latest project, Terminate On Sight. Aside from the club-friendly synths on the lead single “I Like the Way She Do It,” T.O.S. is virtually void of pop influence; instead, the album is driven by aggressive content and gritty production. But while the familiarity of T.O.S. means 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, and Tony Yayo are never out of place, it also ends up restricting the group’s ability to tread new ground or expand their sound. The cast of mostly unknown producers featured throughout the LP constantly hover just above mediocrity, with most of the numbers relying upon simplistic drum patterns or repetitive synth arrangements.

Review by Samir Siddiqui

It is when the songs deviate from formulaic approaches that T.O.S. starts to work on a musical level- the sinister “Straight Outta Southside” is the perfect backing to the Unit’s bravado, and a touch of flute on “Piano Man” is a perfect contrast to the otherwise grimy beat. “No Days Off” is an all-around standout, as sombre piano loops compliment the combative verses of the Unit, and despite the lack of lyrical exercises on T.O.S., the title track sees Lloyd Banks displaying his potency for constructing engaging rhyme patterns, with bars like, “Everything was slow motion, but I think I got the potion, ’cause now that they’re over-dosin’, all my doors are back open// and my Cadillac toatin’, ni**a play with me, I smoke ‘em.”

However, several cuts lack the spark that songs like “Let It Go” provide, and the album suffers from stretches of monotony, worsened by the inability of the tracks (aside from the closer) to stand apart from each other. And while songs like “Ready or Not” and “Party Ain’t Over” are serviceable, the overly-casual song-writing prevents them from really making a forceful impact. Where T.O.S. succeeds is in bridging the gap between G-Unit’s mixtape and album material, and in that, the project almost guarantees approval from the group’s large fan base. Still, the LP is a safe, calculated offering that finds G-Unit trying to gather their feet, instead of attempting to out-race the competition.

Most of the album is actually pretty good. ‘Kitty Kat’, ‘Money Make The World Go Round’ are among my favourites and I hate ‘Get Down’.
Overall - 3.5/5 (Good Look)

JCharades wrote on July 2nd, 2008 at 4:41 pm

WTF!!!!^^^^^what do you mean repetitive. What does Lloyd Banks have to offer that 50, Yayo, and Buck deliver on this album. The content is the same but their styles are different as always and now they seem to be opening up the doors to more mainstream producers this time around which takes away from their formula of the yesteryears of music. Everyone does their thing and well on this album and it isnt separating records like Beg For Mercy (which was clearly a ploy to promote Bucks and Banks for the upcoming albums at the time)so they have to do more music together than apart because their a group and we know what they can do separately.

3.5 is good for their album because its not extraordinary but its not that ordinary neither

No disrespect to Samir but can we get a different perspective in regards to a album review. It seems juding the last few album reviews Samir may listen to more positive hip hop than hip hop that has a focus on aggressive content. So the album will most likely start out at a disadvantage. Similar to if a teacher told everyone in the class that they start with an A but for whatever reason you start with a B or C.

All in all the review is opinionated like all reviews and if someone else wrote something I would prob disagree with them lol. I don’t disagree with the score by much. I say its a 3.5 out of 5 personally but im still going to cop it.

18.
Pounce wrote on July 2nd, 2008 at 5:16 pm

I know hip hop niggas think more on a what have you done for me lately basis. But 50 did give niggas 2 free mixtapes that were straight fire before this album. Not sure what happend to the gangsta grillz mixtape but im assuming he told you why he didnt link up with dramam in “you so tough” lol.

19.
Jay wrote on July 2nd, 2008 at 5:17 pm

how am i hating the cd is weak there a difference between hate and opinion and Lloyd Banks has way more to offer than every1 that is currently from Gunit in the song TOS Banks killed it other than that its repetitive and boring the content is the same yeah styles are different but its still repetitive my opinion and the game album was pushed back by Interscope
then again cuz nas album was gonna be on the same day o well that gives Game time 2 make more mixtapes

This album has alot of quality material i bought thealbum today and it hot. If fans don’t appreciate this album and they expect more outta g-unit well let just say that your waistin your time. Alot of fans talk about wanting quality material well you got it. I mean i really don’t want to rate the album but it hot. In my opinion the 2 hottest album of 2008 is Tha Carter 3 & T.O.S. I personally don’t care about album sell this album is hot as hell. And whether there album sell plat or gold at this point it still good. I mean i can see if the album sold 46k and did a fat joe move us then that terrible. But for me i think the album will sell very well at the end. Maybe it won’t go plat in it first week but it will go plat weeks from now.

I mean it one thing to hate and another thing to give your honest opinion. And at this point we all know that ya’ll don’t like g-unit which is find. But if ya’ll don’t like them then don’t leave a comment it as simple as that. And not only that ya’ll are dissin every g-unit fans as if ya’ll don’t have a favorite rapper that ya’ll be cock ridin to. I mean if ya’ll don’t like g-unit don’t listen to them but im pretty sure ya’ll already cop the album and is probably throwing a birthday party. But ya’ll will turn around and diss the Unit as if your comments actually make any sense. What ya’ll seriously need to stop doing is dick poppin the game cuz it seem like he puttin alot of word including other thing in your mouth for real. I mean alot of ya’ll constently says who the fuck listen to g-unit well my question is who th fuck listens to the game with his cookie monster bitch ass. Ya’ll need to stop letting the game put all of his magical sesame street cookies in your mouth and feeding you all of his g-unit hate.

I’m more of a underground substance laced consumer as long as you have something of substance I can relate to then I’m good and I never could relate to this kat… mos people jus like him based on the ja rule situation and thats a shame that people would love someone out of hate for another… IMO!

post #58 hit the nail right on the head

I was a big G Unit fan at on point. Now, I realize they can not produce quality music anymore. They let the best actual artist they had go(Young Buck), he had the content he had the passion and he the had the story to tell.

Lloyd and Tony, Please.

NO HITS
NO CONTENT
WACK HOOKS
SAME SONG DIFFERENT BEAT

G Unit is Done, and the projection forecasting 700,000 records?? Yeah right if this record moves over 140,000 copies debut week I will be surprised.

I have read all the comments and am not here to talk shit about any artist just give an honest unbiased opinion (like Realtalkny.) I have been a loyal 50 and G-Unit fan since the Power of the Dollar CD and the mixtape days.

Quite truthfully though after listening multiple times I am a bit disappointed. I agree with my man #66 Beg for Mercy was DAMN good, Get Rich or Die Trying (CLASSIC), The Documentary (Well rounded album). But this latest effort leaves me wanting more, don’t get me wrong I like the album but this won’t keep the unit afloat or put up numbers that will keep the ‘counting’ haters away.

Truthfully rap has become so commercial and repetitive that most albums are sad. Whether it be ‘Doctors Advocate’ or ‘Curtis’(neither a classic on a lyrical level.) Being a real fan of an artist or group means being able to analyze their success and shortcomings. I haven’t been awe struck with a Banks metaphor lately, I don’t think I’ve ever been fully impressed with a whole Yayo track, he’s a good hype man but lets admit it he’s a M. Bleek. Occasional good 16 bars or track but probably falling off without his big brother around. Who cares if Buck is gone if he makes quality music and can stay afloat without having to resort to diss tracks against the Unit to keep popularity around him then more power to him.

To quote Yayo someone tell majority of the rap game, real hip-hop lovers are tired of R.N. Regular Nigga raps. We want thought provoking lyrics… not I shoot, I kill, I drive my fancy car!

Realtalk good review it is a 3 because it’s not terrible, but by no means a 5. Great job with the site(the realest hip-hop news site I’ve ever seen.) Radio stations, BET, & MTV get there news here. Keep up the good work!

on some real shit, you bought this album to bitch, whine, and moan about it. It takes a real dumb shit to buy an album, listen to it, and then complain. Just be honest, if you felt it was good, your hating side would overwhelm you, and you’d still say it sucked.

All in all I give it like 4.5/5… I love it beginning to end.

Anyone who doesnt love this album most be too busy listening to Lil Wayne’s wack ass Carter 3 album, sounding like he gargling sprite on every record…
Or maybe Plies or Soldier boy… hmmmm seeing as how these guys actuall move units I would think their retarded 13 yr old white girl suburbian fan base might not like G Units album…

Anyways 4.5/5 Better than Beg for Mercy

From once being someone who you couldnt tell shit to about g unit, right now u can say whatever you want. There was a time when Rocafella records could do no wrong , anybody remember a label called no limit? They ran shit so hard. They had people buyin albums by artist named Kane and Abel, Feind and Mia X, so much so that those artist went gold!!! …… WHO THE FUCK ARE THEY?????? Death row was the biggest label on the planet at one point and time. Everything comes to an end and I do have to say that T.O.S. is the end of G unit. Yes they were once the platinum standard in hip hop like the labels I have mentioned before, well its looks like they just made room for the next movement to come thru. Only question now is who is it gonna be? I dont really give a fuck to tell you the truth , I just know that this is what it is. T.O.S. officially puts the crown back on the market .
