A bunch of wannabe keep it real rappers that ain’t even relevant, recycling samples trying to act like it’s 96 again and all they do is hate on new shit? Niggas always talk about the golden age but for a 13 year old kid, this is the golden age!!! That song was so dope cause everything he said had a hidden meaning… that’s Nas level shit… he just put it over some steel drums which is also some Nas shit if you had the 2nd album cassette with the bonus track “Silent Murder” on it. Ok. Let me break this whole shit down right quick.
1. Don’t be fooled. This is great almost-viral advertising for Ice-T and Soulja Boy for two reasons. First, Ice-T is using SB’s popularity to boost his visibility. Second, this “beeflet” will keep sb’s career going longer, because now all of his young fans will rock his shit even harder. This strengthens SB’s brand by making him seem more rebellious and irreverent, and Ice’s by making him more visible (he has enough cred).
2. If this IS real, it’s really stupid. All of it. We all know that SB’s music is a gimmick. We all know Ice is an OG. Great. But, SB’s brand is huge with kids, who can’t appreciate the old school, or anything more complex than candy. Soldier Boy is the spongebob of hip hop, but whoever made spongebob is PAID.
3. Garbage sells. White kids LOVE soldier boy. Why? It’s perfectly packaged blackness. It’s like you get a hood party in your whitebread suburban house everytime you put it on. AND their parents hate it. If they knew what he was saying, they’d hate it more, and the kids would rock it more. As far as a product, SB is genius. His shit is perfectly targeted to the MTV audience. And that’s what is is A PRODUCT. All the motherfuckin record execs LOVE IT. I wouldn’t be surprised if they designed it themselves. People now and days don’t know what hiphop really mean beside the person who created and came up with the name. If people really knew what hiphop really meant then artists like soulja boy wouldn’t be consider as a hiphop artist. I felt the same as Kanye, I’m in my 30s so my generation is the first to be able to look at the new-jacks from this perspective. Naturally we’re gonna have a different view from the ones enjoying it. But we didn’t have the same view when we were shaking and dancing to Humpty Hump, Fresh Prince or whoever else was making music equivalent to Soulja. P.S. Because at this point everybody has there own opinion of what hiphop mean. And with all of there opinion being different then that means that there only has to be one that is correct or all. But if we can’t find that correct define of what hiphop mean then that either means that there isn’t a define yet or there isn’t one at all. In my opinion towards other people comments on what hiphop is could either be wrong or right.
But at this point in time the way hiphop is being treated i would say that there shouldn’t be a define. I think the art form of hiphop has been ruin to the point where you can’t give it a define. People can call it whatever they want they can also have there own define of what hiphop is but will it matches what hiphop is. I actually think that there should be a dictionary filled with define of what hiphop is but then again maybe there shouldn’t i don’t know. But as far as soulja boy go’s i really don’t think he’s hiphop and that just relativity speakin. But then again i could be wrong and find out later on that soulja boy was actually an hiphop artist. I would have agreed with Ice-T a few months ago- Not Soulja Boy specifically, but that hip-hop was dead and a lot of bullshit killed it. Then I went back through my archives, one last goodbye before I left hip-hop alone. It occurred to me,; My favorite songs have never been played on the radio or had videos. Hip-hop has always had (2) sides; the commercial-pop culture side, and the real shit. Hip-hop ain’t dead, it’s just underground again- you can find it, if you look somewhere besides you-tube.
