Why You Should Never Sign with Another Rapper…

Juelz Santana, Max B, Remy, Cuban Link, Jay Hood, everyone on Roc-A-Fella…the listed of disgruntled rappers we’ve heard from goes seems to go on and on. But lets all be honest…they primarily have only themselves to blame for breaking one of the cardinals sins of the business of hip hop…a mistake you out there, you “potential rappers,” would be a idiot to make…they all signed…to another rapper!

If you want another rapper to help you…write better raps…now that’s logical. Need a hook…throw him some cash if need be, but don’t sign a 5 album deal so you can get cosigned. What the hell do they know about developing and selling anyone but themselves! And what worse…they’re not even really in charge. The same people they have to politic with you for budget, they have to polly with for theirs.

When the Dipset started, it was 100% about Cam. Then both Jim and Juelz became far more relevant than me. So of course he bugs out! Problems!

Max B comes out through Jim, but Jim’s got to focus on getting all his paper right. To hell is Byrdgang…problems!

Everyone from Terror Squad is vamoose because Fat Joe blew out to Miami to make sure he got his ringtones monies right…problems!

Rumor has it that DTP just got their entire collection of R&B artists fired this week! And no one on Rocafella, more than half of them being from my own city of Philly, can understand why they can’t get a couple extra bars on “American Gangster.”

You think Jay Millz’s gonna have any more success than Currency had on Young Money? Your boss admits he’s addicted to syrup!

Sure, there are some anomalies here and there, T-Pain and Akon, John Legend and Kanye, but more likely, you’ll be Peedi Crakk or Triple Seis or any other disgruntled rapper, at home pissed knowing whatever tracks you turned in will never see the light of day.

Best advice…make hits on your own, get a fan base on MySpace, and sign with Koch.

Crazy…..I was thinking the exact same thing this morning after reading some shit…it’s true. But it also has a very positive side to it. Your name gets out there in 1 second to a large crowd….then it’s on you. That’s true and you can’t front.

  7. Bari the Beautiful Says:

You do get your name out there…but you also run the risk of being associated with that person that brung you in forever. What happens when they fall off?

  8. PEW PEW PEW! Says:

  15. ELI MANNING Says:

KOCH is the D-League. Sell records on Koch and you might get a called from the big league teams. Look @ jim jones as sorry as he is he got a deal that last ALBUM was hot trash.

  16. Anon Says:

LOL @ 14. Unless you a pop artist with a machine behind you, you not seeing any cash like that. Might as well go to Koch, handle your own shit and do shows to keep the lights on. Its a new dawn & new day. Being signed to a major aint shit.

  17. ns_dip514 Says:

    LMFAO @ #15

  18. ihaveadream Says:

Sir I like your writings but your last piece of advise was horrible. “Build a fanbase on myspace”?????? How about this, make good music or stop rapping. These dudes spend so much time flooding peoples comment boxes with “promotion” that they never work on the craft. The days of getting on with trash are numbered people. If you ain’t got it in your heart, it might be time to go see if wal-mart will still take you back.

  19. LIAR!!! Says:

MAX B IS GARBAGE, HE AINT NEVER MAKE A HIT RECORD ALL HE DOES IS HOOKS, MY NIGGAS IN BROOKLYN BE ARGUEING OVER WHO ROBBED HIM THE MOST !! LOL!!

  21. we stone Says:

if rappers didnt know this by now they’re idiots. if u want to find a good example of why you shouldnt sign to other rappers listen to the “Jay Jerkin’” skit on Jadakiss’s album Kiss tha Game Goodbye.

  22. we stone Says:

“Rapen U Records” (Skit) by The L.O.X. is a good one too its basically the same thing.

  23. WASE.ONE Says:

CHURCH!!!…head to koch, naturesound, babygrande, stone throw, landspeed…independent is the way to go….

  24. Cheahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Says:

    bo0gz knos be$t Says:

    YOU NEVER LIED RTNY!

niggas need to stop goin for deze shakey deals. you cant both be in the same market. cuz at the end of the day ur eachothers competition. and a nigga can only push you so far but NO ONE IS GONNA GO HARDER FOR YOU THAN YOU WOULD YOURSELF

  28. guigug Says:

realtalkny… ya’ll lived up to ya name, cuz thats real talk

  29. Year of tha Loso Says:

if a rapper looked at any of u and said i wanna sign u, who would turn down the offer?

opportunities like that r rare, get real, there r thousands of dudes who will sing instead.

  30. Flippin-S Says:

Thats true, but it doesnt always mean you wont sign a talanted artist, but 90 % of the time Rappers never sign rappers with longterm carreers.

  31. REALspit Says:

Depends how hot the rapper you signed to and how hot you (or your gimmick) are. ie. 50 Cent: Buck, Banks, Yayo all got shine. ( What happened after there first lp is their own fault, cus he did break them in).

Each situation is different, cus theres contracts and egos that you gotta deal with. Most likely tho, you will end up like J Hood, whose album was originally slated to drop when I was 10th grade. Now Im graduating college…..and him…lol

  32. gt Says:

Thats why I respect 50, he make sure his people eat.

  33. moneycashocean Says:

True Story GT^^^^ 50 got all his niggas eating, YaYo is the highest paid hype man in history. Yayo, Banks, Buck are good, what ever happens after their first LP is their problem, 50 did his job.

  34. yo Says:

Eminem signed to an artist Dr Dre

50 cent signed to artists Dr Dre and Eminem

Lyod Banks, Buck, Yayo signed to 50

    they have had some success

  35. brooklynstandup Says:

Who wrote that article? lets be real. Santana, Max B, J-hood was all just dudes who where part of someones crew.. they would have never been put on other wise so they went from some knuckles heads on the streets to the industry getting money.

Roca-fella artist where getting money before the break up half the time the rappers who sign them are just being loyal to there old friends half of which dont have any type of talent to begin with. if young dro didnt sign with T.I would anyone care about shoulder lean? if Snoop wasnt with Dre at the time would doggy style have been as big as it was. If chingy wasnt with luda for his first album he would have never went gold.

when Camron went to the roc he tapped into an established artist fan base, people who liked jay or state property or kanye now went out and brought his album in addition to his old fans. when you sign with an artist you go from zero fans to possible all the fans they have. how can you beat that unless you want to sit around and wait for a record label to pump money into your project. If Santana wasnt on dip set he would just be another NY rapper waiting for the game to swing back to the East. thats realtalk

  36. Pounce Says:

I feel # 35 on some of the comments, but I think snoop would have still blown up and young drow would have been a 1 hit wonder. Well until he comes w/ another hit or album he is actually.

But anyway I think the article was pointing out that in todays climate, not the past. That recent history shows you do not sign with another rapper. Its a needle in ever hay stack but the exception just proves the rule. In the past, rappers sign to other rappers and blew up. But its 2008 now…

  37. KB Says:

THIS ARTICLES IS REAL TALK, REALTALK! EVEN BAD BOY, BIGGIE WAS THE FIRST ARTIST, THEN HE WAS DOING A FUN PROJECT WITH PUFF AND MANAGE PUFF, BUT AFTER BIG DIED, PUFFY BECAME THE BIGGEST STAR ON BAD BOY AND A CROOK OF A CEO AND STARTED ROBBING ALL HIS ARTIST SO NOW ITS HARD FOR THEM TO SHINE.

  38. FatherTime Says:

Just like jadakiss and sheek. lol
