Damn… I was about to get on some stupid FIRST shit when i paused to actually think about what i just read. When I look at the bigger picture, I can’t help but ask what is wrong with us. Almost all the headlines related to hip-hop culture are negative… Proof killed, T.I. arrested, Sean Taylor shot, Spice 1 in critical condition, and the list goes on. All my life I have defended hip-hop, but tonight I tried to think against myself for once. What if some Hip-hop does glorify, if not promote a violent culture and negative values? Have I at any point thought i was cool to carry a gun? Have i smoked weed because all of my homeboys do it? Did I ever spend hard earned money on spinning rims because some music video made me think they were the shit? I can’t even imagine I repeated something i heard in a song to some I care about just the other day - “some bitches like fleas, u gotta use your palms to get em off of u”. Sad to say, but even if Hip-hop does not glorify the negatives of our culture, it doesn’t criticize it, and it does paint the negative picture for us to see over and over. And believe it or not, when u have something around u all the time, u stop noticing how shocking or wrong it is. I don’t and will never say Hip-hop is a bad thing, but the are definitely aspects of it that need to be changed. I in no way mean to write this as a judgment of Spice 1 or his life, I just read the article and it made me think. My prayers go go out to him and i hope he gets better. I don’t have the solution to anything myself but I just believe we should start questioning some of the things we hold on tightly to and ask ourselves if we can help make them better.

Most people understand that carry a gun and being a gangsta shot people..etc is WRONG no matter how much some rappers try to glorify that whole type of lifestyle.

I’ve been listening to hiphop my whole life and trust me I know what’s right and what I would never do. I’ve spend money on rims because I want my car to look good and YES I’ve been inspired by different videos and lyrics but there’s nothing wrong with that. Hiphop music has been a big part of my life and inspired my in different ways but never in a negative way though.

The guy is not preaching he’s just saying what he feels and it makes some sens. They are critics that have to be made about Hip Hop music and it’s not because idiots who know nothing about the culture are criticizing that we can’t accept any critic at all.
I think there is a point to be made concerning the constant negative image that is being depicted in big part of rap music.
One of the reason I respect Pac so much is that he painted a real representation of life. He talked about girls, family, social issues, friends, the hood, his thug life… The individual made some sens!
Most of the rapers out there are just playing a role. No matter how thugged out you are you’re life is made of whole variety of emotions. Speak em out! Give a sens of authenticity to your music!
We’ve made it difficult to express anything else than gansterism in music cuz if it is not well done we trash it and consider the fool as weak. It is now very difficult for an artist who made his name through gansta rap to speak about anything but crime.
