Real Talk, I agree. I’ve thought for a while that expensive jewelry was for the simple-minded. If you sit and analyze why people like jewelry, you’ll realize it’s retarded. People go ga-ga over the shit because it’s shiny. And the industry, realizing that people are so mesmerized by shiny objects, put ridiculously high prices on it and make billions off it. Because it’s shiny. What the fuck are we, 2-year-olds?
And another part of the reason people buy gawdy stuff is to show how rich they are, which is also pointless and childish. Bill Gates makes more in one year than any rapper will ever accrue in a lifetime, but you don’t see him walking about with $2 million on his neck or $500,000 on his teeth. Why? Becuase he doesn’t have to prove he’s rich. Everybody already knows. If you’re a rapper who’s sold a shitload of records and heads a label, the public already knows you’ve money out the ass. If you’re an athlete, we already know how much money you’ve got because the ESPN publicizes that shit on TV and contracts are all over the internet. You don’t need that glittery bullshit for people to know you signed for 6 years, $120 million.
What’s funny is how it’s mostly white people who capitalize on the sale of ice. I don’t know how many black people are running those mine shafts in Africa or are big-time jewel distributors. It’s an industry dominated by Arabs and Jews. The negro is just the customer who comes in with his eyes bulging and jaw dropped, ready to fork over money to the other man.
The bedazzlement with shiny stuff is another of the problems in black society. We need to wake the fuck up and start putting more of an emphasis on what’s important. If Baby insists on throwing his money around to prove he’s got it, he could’ve used the guap he spent on ice on scholarships for smart black kids who don’t have the financial backing to go to college; he could spend it to build houses in New Orleans for the families affected by Katrina; he could donate it to the Louisiana public school system to get more books, hire better teachers and get computers. By doing that, he could affect thousands of lives and make an impact on America that could last several generations… and he’d get positive attention for it, so people would still know that he’s got money.
But instead, he, along with the other monkey-ass niggas, would rather flaunt their shiny shit and act like it makes them better men.

Agreed with #11, but some jewelry does appreciate. Rare stones that are flawless and hard to find that have been around for hundreds of years. Those are the types of rocks that get auctioned. The type of personalized, silly shit that rappers wear, it loses value once it’s been sold for the first time. Like cars do. If your chain has your name or nickname or record company’s name in it, the next man can’t wear that shit unless he’s going to bring it to a jeweler and have him take it apart, melt the gold or platinum, then reconstruct the whole thing it into something new. And that would cost extra, so he’d be losing more money than the jewels themselves are worth. Why would a rapper or athlete bother to do that when he could just buy his own brand new shit?
