In my opinion it seems like two options artist have in the music industry. The JD/Jay-z way where you can try to fight i-tunes and apple or lil wayne where you can just go with the flow and not fight it. We all know jay-z and JD after reading this article fighting an up hill battle. It actually helps cause record labels and artist have to find another way to get marketing dollars. Plus not every artist can do that unless they are as big as Hov. New artist needs fans to get their music anyway possible.

Lil waynes way is just flood the market with material via mixtapes where he makes no money but builds a “stan-base” that will eventually support him as a artist when he drops a album. While also getting haters and a industry buzz all at the same time. The nigga features on a bunch of shit, so that helps compensate him financially from what he may end up missing from album sales. He might make more by now per featured verse but lets say he gets $10-20k. And he did 70 something features (not sure exact #) even after taxes hes pocketing some decent change.

…..but LMAO @ JD not knowing how an IPod works!!! I have had my IPOD for a year now and have yet to buy an ITUNE!!! I just download new and old albums and so do a lot of people LOL.

And besides…people like me have been buying singles for YEARS!!! That’s why soundscan even bothers to track them, same with Billboard??? Buying singles is NOTHING new!!! I had STACKS of them starting from “What’s the 411″ and R Kelly and Public Anouncement (LMBAO @ Public Announcement) which I eventually bought both of) in the 90’s as well as many others!!!

I don’t know about Jay-Z cuz I remember hearing him say on Imaginary player “Your single is 99 cents, mines was 4 BUCKS” and I was like WOW, dude is one beast of a business man lol!!!

But, I am a REALLY HARD to please consumer, because I keep a high standard for myself in everything I do and alwayz have so you have to VERY consistant and offer something new or creative to get my money for a whole album. It’s been that way my whole life. I was taught Quality over Quantity!!!

Besides, the singles always had like 3 remixes (before they released remixes as singles or a regular basis) and the instrumental so I could learn the song and listen to how I sounded LOL!!!

WELL SAID JD. This is exactly what’s happening at the award shows. Being that music isn’t being sold, they haven’t tabulated the awards on merit, but are letting the fans vote for the winners. The problem with that is the fans are YOUNG and are voting for the HOT SINGLE of the moment. Case in point, RIHANNA. She shouldn’t have won anything as far as ALBUM or FEMALE because she barely made it over the GOLD mark, but because “UMBRELLA” was hot(?), she’s winning over true artists like Fergie and Beyonce who’s still selling albums and are up to 3 mil in the U.S. alone. Rihanna can’t even sell concert tickets besides from selling records. Lil Weasel’s another. 1,000 mixtapes doesn’t make you hot or the best. It makes you whack because you don’t have the content to fill up the quantity you’re putting out. Singles aka disposable music is running real artists out of the industry because everything’s being downloaded as “singles” – it doesn’t make sense to put your heart, sould and best lyrics into rap if it’s going to be given away for free. How can we expect to be inspired by them if we’ll be richer than the rappers soon? The FANS need to be on videos if that’s the case.

Singles aint hurting the game….Its hurting their pockets. Even if dude sells 4 million singles…How much does a single go for?….$3-$4….That is not equalavent to even selling 1 million albums at $14.99….If niggas is mad about not selling albums…Make sure you got more than one hit on there..People don’t buy albums just for one song…gotta have at least 2 or 3.

I agree with some of Henri’s points actually. Consumers are not smarter cause they go with whats in and music is suppose to be creative.

Article was a good read, i might actually support his book. JD had a few good analogies, hes smarter than I thought. Of course he wants to get paid, all artist do. He is just aware that you can’t fight limewire type places so hes going right at Apple. The problem is Universal Music Group will not back him or any artist even if they sell 1 out of every 3 records.

Even Jay-Z said when he was interviewed about his 10th #1 album he said he has never done well in the singles charts but he always seemed to do well in the album chart. People dont buy his music just to here the singles they want to here the album as a whole. That is the reason he didnt release it on itunes cus people can buy the tracks they like or heard on the radio.

Henri… you make alot of assumptions.. could the truth of the matter be that consumers are smart! very smart! and they are tired of buying filler albums! e.g. albums with only 3-4 good songs on it! Quality rules not quanity. Itunes is a guy way for us to sift through these Bullsh*t albums and get at the goods… The reality fo the matter consumers are tired of be had by these label companys and that is where the true blame should lie.. they rape the artists and they rape the consumers… well no more… we are turning the tables ….
