Jay-Z On Working With Biggie

Jay-Z

It’s one of the most fabled stories in hip-hop history: Jay-Z and the Notorious B.I.G. meeting in the studio to collaborate on what would become the scorching track “Brooklyn’s Finest,” from Jay’s classic debut, Reasonable Doubt. One top-class MC pitted against a rising blue-chip MC, and when Jay passed Biggie a notebook to jot down words for his verse, the Bad Boy rapper passed it back and responded that he doesn’t write down his lyrics. Jay said that he didn’t either, and the lyrical showdown began.

Part 3 of MTV’s 4 part series.

LOL @ #4 most of the Jay-Z haters just hate on his new shit but to say Reasonable Doubt aint a classic is beyond belief. There are alot of rappers in your list that would not be in any bodies top 5 let alone above Jay-Z. Jay-Z is the greatest he is way more consistent than any of them dudes you mentioned.

Ice Cube is top 10…i would have HOV up there high (like #1), but don’t dismiss Ice Cube. His rhymes on NWA, he wrote rhymes for others and he had classic solo albums. Go back and listen to ICE CUBE. His storytelling and delivery and in the words of ?uestlove…”…when I first heard Ice Cube, I literally thought he was coming to my house to shoot me”. “Jackin’ For Beats”…one of the best songs in hip hop history. “Ghetto Fairytale”, “Predator”, “Steady Mobbin’”, “How To Survive In South Central”, “Good Day”, all those NWA tracks…Ice Cube is top ten, it is just that his base was from the WEST COAST and the only west coast artist east coast people give any love too in their top 10s is Tupac (no love [and i am not saying they deserve top ten] for DJ Quik, Too Short, E-40, hell even Pharcyde, Alkoholiks, hell even SNOOP DOGG [who deserves top 10 MCs ever cause he is 34 and been doing it hard and selling records since 19. look at Snoop's catalogue.]. I ain’t here to flame East Coast bias, but come now, i bet most can’t even make a Top 10 West Coast MC list…itz all good though rap is rap…

sum of ya’ll rap critics out there that have a problem wit hov and the quotes he uses in his rhymes are crazy in my opinion

i write rhymes but no to become a rapper, just as a hobby
but if i were a famous rapper, from right here in brooklyn and i grew up on all these great rappers and classic albums i would absolutely quote the legends in rap on my albums.
on a few songs i would quote a true gem from big, jay, nas, pac and all ya’ll part-time rap fans wouldnt even know that line was quoted cuz ya’ll dont study your lessons.
jayz is like the peyton manning of rap, he’s a teacher and a student, he studied his teachers b4 him, thats why he is what he is

another day , another jayz article
“this is jay everyday/no days off”

#22 got the perfectly right idea. #22 we gotta givem the benefit of the doubt, if you don’t rhyme then u don’t count your opinions don’t count, it don’t matter what u say, but if u rhyme then ya boy The King right here just dropped a gem on yall rappers or mc’s or whatever u call yourselves. everybody does that shit in rap. that was the new thing to do. to quote a line from somebody else. see it’s funny cause that’s the only thing alot of people try to get on hov is quoting the lines from somebody else. even Camron dissed him but HE’S A HIPOCRITE cause HE DOES THAT SHIT TOO. it started like around 2000 or something when people started quoting Rakim or Big Daddy Kane. your favorite mc’s all do it( Prodigy, Kanye, Nas, there’s more trust me) it’s just that yall ain’t catch it cause yall ain’t listen to rap that deep. yall don’t keep up with lyrics like others do. it’s a way to pay homage when u do that shit. That Camron song about I’m not a writer I’m a biter was a soft jab. it wasn’t to be tooken seriously cause Cam does that shit if not more or as much as Jay. Camron quoted Pac, Biggie, I think even JAY-Z HIMSELF. Jay-Z gets the blame for it but he gets the blame for doing something dope that corny rappers can’t catch on too so the brother still wins. even haters makem win when they mention he doing new shit like that

25.

I was under the impression big was the 1st to spit a whole song without jottin it down. l8r taught jayz how 2 do it. they why ppl called jayz his protege.
but if he had a pad then he was still writtin his thoughts down. & big passed the gift. remember when he used 2 borrow verse of big’s jus 2 get that feel. but big was jus bein chris. one of the greats 2 bless the mic. back then when emcees expressed the drug game they covered it up & told u stories of the real. it wasn’t murder murder murder. but u learned lessons on each line that was spit.
somewhere we lost it for jewelry & riches. but ringtone rappers is done. but the art returns. thank u nas 4 exposin the factors. if u biggie then he puffy. we see what the roc had 2 offer. bleek is still a hit away. beanie is golden(should b plat).
2008 let’s suppprt real hiphop. let the media play with rappers. I can care less if its written or off the top as long as its hott.
rest in peace big, pac, pun, big L, jmj, aaliyah, left eye & all the others that’s paved a way for others 2 follow. tookie we miss u.

NY TO THE WEST WEST YAWL!!!

@Fake thugminican u lost me with Buckshot & Ice Cube top 10 Slick Rick would eat both of those dudes. Steele & Tek are better than Buckshot shorty. Big & Pun are missed crazy. Pun was only dude that gave Big a run for his money. Maybe if Pun & Big were still here we would have NEVER went thru the crunk snap music phase.

All the adults KNOW Jay-z is in the Top 3,and Reasonalble Doubt is in the top 3 classic Albums…The kids just don’t know hip hop…..they are 2 consumed with how old u are. I am just confused on how in every music genre’ age is showing dominance and character and respected, but the folks under 25 have now made an unwritten rule that all rappers have to range from bow-wow to mike jones’ age. If that is what hiphop is going for, we will never have classic albums, legends, and pioneers. Cut the age crap…If Jigga got it…he just got it! NO ONE CAN TOUCH HIM ..lyrically, the metaphores, the tracks, the concept and production. His game is unstoppable…….the ones that can hang simply do not exist anymore…they are deceased…..GROW UP! Get his entire catalog of albums…really listen to every word and then try and battle me in this conversation. You clearly have not done your research.

This nigga needs a new plateform because he has just been repeating himself over and over for the past 11 years. Nothing new with him and his misses. Same soup warmed over.

Besides, how hard is it to be the best when there is nothing to compair to but SHIT!!! It’s like pitting yourself against a mentally retarded person in a academic decathalon right now with this music industry so all you under 25ers need to STOP with the “Greatest” bullshit. 90% of the greatest to ever do it are either dead or no longer rapping and Jay knows it’s an easy win. It’s nothing to go after the weak especially when no one is strong, not even my favorite 50??!!

#22 & 24 - Real Talk.

For all the people that keeps saying Jay’s old, whack, etc., how did he last this long on top with all the same nigga’s ya’ll think are better spittin’ at the same time? He’s the best of the best and ya’ll can’t take it. Jay was born with a gift. If Big and Pac were here Jay would be even better because he’d have competition to keep him on his game. Those same rappers aren’t selling out shows within minutes, influencing anyone, helping people on a global level or putting kids through college. They’re getting high and buying jewelry. Hov’s past that and still spittin’ street knowledge. Blacks are the only ethnicity to tell their people to retire. Age ain’t nothin’ but a number and if the young rappers can’t take his spot, then he deserves his spot. Ya’ll some stupid ass niggas.

Hov’s the GOAT of this rap shit - PERIOD.
