Track Review: Lil Wayne- Gossip

Lil Wayne
‘Gossip’
The Carter III
3.5/5

By Samir Siddiqui

“Haven’t I been good to you?” asks Lil’ Wayne by way of the excellent sample employed on his latest offering ‘Gossip’. Ironically enough, hip-hop should be asking the very same question to Wayne, as it seems like lately, every big-wig in hip-hop has had Wayne on top of their favorite artists list, and he hasn’t exactly been dropping classic albums for the past two years. Still, the brash confidence and desire can  clearly be seen when Wayne puts effort into delivering a performance like the one seen at this month’s BET Hip-Hop Awards. It’s not the moment-of-the-year that some make it out to be, but Wayne kills with the flow overtop an absolutely banging production, southern bass, sped-up backup vocals, heart-monitor beeps and all. Sure, the various corny punchlines are still there, but some standout bars make up for them, “And if I’m wrong, there is no right!…You don’t have to pick me to win the title fight, but I’ma wear the championship belt so tight!  Lil Wayne wants to make it crystal clear that he is hip-hop, and that he’s very much alive. This isn’t a bad start to proving that.

“Sure, the various corny punchlines are still there”

Come on, his punchlines are better than anyone out there, some ppl just don’t get them, they slow, you have to think outsid ethe box.

Like in the song he says “Yall niggas want beef i wanna steak” Come on who says that, this dude is the truth fuck haters!

Also this line “And if i wrong there is no right and if im wrong there is snow white” Half the ppl that listens to it will not get what he is saying, but if youthink outside the box you’ll see its not a corny punch line.

Lil wayne; the next best thing to Jay

  6. T2 Says:

The track ain’t bad Lil’ Wayne has a style that few people can match and it is a style that you will either love or hate it cus it may come accross annoying.

I like Wayne as an artist but I think some of his fans go over the top when they call him the greatest cus he ain’t achieved that much yet. This track is dope though if he keeps this standard on the album it probably will be a classic.

  7. BIG dUTTY STINKIN Says:

He going at BoW Wow with that line…. “a lotta rappers BARK(bow wow), some of ‘em even BITE (bow weezy)…hahaha

  8. Getting Gwap Says:

Not feeling Lil Wayne and his whole best rapper alive gimmick.
He does have good songs here and there but overral,he’s not hot unless he considers jumping on every other tracks to do features makes him hot.

I’m feeling that gossip track though.

  9. Bee [Eazy] Says:

“He going at BoW Wow with that line…. “a lotta rappers BARK(bow wow), some of ‘em even BITE (bow weezy)…hahaha”

LOL i didnt think about that one…he is tho’
Bow wow been on his dick bitting his style

  10. mrbe honest Says:

sonn!! maybe if he stop kissing man he could be someone

  11. Bee [Eazy] Says:

    i give it a

    4.5/5

  12. dolo Says:

LIL WAYNE IS THE MOST OVERRATED RAPPER IN THE HISTORY OF RAP MUSIC… has no classic songs.. no classic albums..hasnt came out w/a single since 06.. never was knwn to sell records… and he is hip hop? he is the best rappe alive? wow… i dont knw what people r thinking…

  13. King Says:

when he performed this shit i thought it was fire but then i hear the CDQ and somethin is missin, its not a good track and at the same time its not horrible, somewhere in between

  14. Hip Hop fan Says:

    no need to hate, haters

    Its a hot track.

  15. .................... Says:

His performance of the track was fire. But the actual track itself(the non performance version) is wack.

  16. Deshawn Says:

    Number 8

YOUR PAST HISTORY OF RECORD SALES OR LACK OFF DOESN’T MEAN SHIT. ASK 50

  17. Sheed Says:

Lil Wayne came with it on this shit, Got BEATS?? HOLLA AT ME!!!!!!!

  18. Dragon Says:

The perfomance and track are fire

WHAT THE FUCK CAN 50 SAY AFTER THIS??

  19. Missezrenee Says:

I think its a pretty hot track.. and he is not talkin about bow wows ass in that line :-/ i dont think he’s worried about bow wow they’ve never beefed why start now lmfao..

  20. Santana Says:

Ay realtalkny you say some lines are corny? maybe cuz you don’t understand them? I donno.. I liked these

If I’m wrong there is no right/ and if I’m wrong there is snow white (go back to coke).

I’m tryna b polite but u niggaz in my hair like the fuckin PO-LICE.

these other rappers nice, this other rappers bark, some of em even bite ( Bow wow).

I emerged from all of that I am a living pion – NEER/NEAR Zion (meaning near an ideal place)

Why do rappers, why do rappers lie to fans lie to rappers lotta rappers lie like actors

  21. YUGEY SEZHU Says:

I AWARD IT A 2.5/5,WEEZY IS A FANTASTIC RAPPER BUT THIS IS NOT HIS BEST

“Ay realtalkny you say some lines are corny? maybe cuz you don’t understand them?”

EXACTLY!RTNY,WE WOULD LIKE A THOROUGH ANALYSIS OF “I SIT ON YOUR GIRLS BREATH LIKE HER LAST MEAL”,PREFERABLY DONE BEFORE CAM’RON GIVES US A HOT WINTER

  22. ATI (Critic SS) Says:

no, I understood the lines pretty well, thanks, nothing really complex about his rhymes

  23. BLah Says:

beats hot, but yet again he spits garbage
    wasted a nice beat

  24. Santana Says:

Number 16, Not complex.. just clever, not just mindless punchlines. Oh this is an NY website. yall goin hate regardless anyway lol

    peace

  25. K.O Says:

    Hot shit.

and number 16, a line doens’t have to be complex to b hot. Its just clever wording that makes it good.

Like Lupe’s “Dumb it down” He aint saying SHIT! lol just trying to be complex for no reason. Ain’t nothing complex about talking in 3rd person or being abstract lol You just saying what everybody else is saying.

I’d much rather prefer clever punchlines, style, swagger, and delivery.

  26. mike................................................The white boy Says:

    song is cool

  27. Shake Says:

I noticed the live version was posted. If anyone (including realtalk … i couldnt find an email) wants it here is the STUDIO version [Dirty/NoDJ]

    http://sharebee.com/cdcd499b

  28. #24 Says:

Greatest rapper alive? nah not even close.

dude has 0 classic albums. he got some dope 16s on some of his shit. his free’s are pretty ill too. But his music, sometimes will have a nigga like the fuck? wayne does state some weird lines and shit, and the fact that hes claiming he’s the best rapper alive? get the fuck outta here.

Gossip had some nice lines, but overall that shit wasn’t as hot as its hyped up to be. everyone can say wayne’s flow and shit got good around carter II but it aint on the level of a hip hop legend. keep rappin weezy.

  29. ns_dip514 Says:

    shit….co-fuckin-sign #25 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. Ahijah Says:

@ 8 agree fully I aint gonna hate because there is one or two songs of his I like but The best rapper alive comment had me scratching my head. No Classic album and only performs on other people records He is one the most overrated artists ever and he is copying what The Game done last year bein on loads of Mixtapes.

  31. Swaggalicious Says:

Damn yall check out Number 24

Shit sounds better on the Cd version realtalk

  32. myspace.com/outoforder82 Says:

Yawn!!! He Jus stood there and rapped what’s so hot about that? AND his lyrics is wack…it’s like soon as he got CROWNED he went DOWN!!!!!

  33. Shake Says:

i personally think he sounds better (still bad haha) on the live version. he atleast has some emotion in that one. the studio version seems downright lazy.

  34. DJGX Says:

@22..lil wayne is nowhere near as good a rappa as lupe, and dumb it down does make sense to people with intelligence…if u don’t have a brain his lines are insane, but if your smart his metaphors are fly az hell.

in a freestlye wayne iz good but lupe would crush him with his words…and for all the folks who say its dumb u have 2 realize its basically a freestyle tryin to tell u he’s not gonna dumb down his rhymes for u,eitha read a m*thaf*ckin book (roflmao) and learn some shii or stay where u at cuz he’s achieved a higher level of lyricism along with:common, jay, kanye, andre 3000…..etc.

as for the track i like it…i can listen to alot of weezy tracks but im not a die-hard fan,i still believe jay-z is the best rappa alive and ye is 2nd but thts my opinion.

now all u wayne stans may hate…

  35. COOS Says:

u not the greatest till u drop a classic cd…he has yet to drop anything noteworthy..but hes not bad

  36. dolo Says:

lil wayne raps about some dumb shit.. #17 santana.. read the bars u just wrote down from lil wayne and tell me if they are really hot.. “I’m tryna b polite but u niggaz in my hair like the fuckin PO-LICE” wooooo, thats hot??? what does that have to do w/anything.. what is he rhyming about?? all he is doing is rhyming, he is not saying anything relevant.. that is some shit a little kid would make up.. u cant be serious defending those bars

  37. cruz Says:

    GARBAGE.

  38. K.O Says:

    DJGX, number 30

u aint gotta be smart to understand “dumb it down” i listened it 1 time and got it..no rewind none of that shit.

Lupe is my dude but those are not even complex rhymes. Jay has complex rhymes. common has insane word play, wayne has word play, punchlines and delivery…Out of those 3 Jay is the best. Don’t know why you mention kanye lol he has some way to go but his good. Dre 3 stacks is actually underrated.

personally i think wayne is better than Lupe/

You see how I didn’t have to insult you to get my point across? Now who’s more intelligent? :D

  39. Santana Says:

Number 32, Dolo is say thats dumb shit? ok

Go to youtube, and search “Lil wayne – trouble”.

  40. Stick2daScript Says:

Hey, check these two tracks out from Wayne’s first album. Before the Gillie da Squid rumors about he wrote Wayne’s lyrics for the Carter. Keep in mind that he was only 17 at this time. The kid been had a lil something with him!

  41. AL MONEY Says:

THIS VERSION IS BETTER THAN THE STUDIO VERSION…HE PERFORMED THIS WITH EMOTION…..THE STUDIO VERSION HAS NO FEELING….I CAN FEEL THE WORDS MORE WHEN LISTENING TO THE PRERFORMANCE……

HE HAS BEEN KILLING MIXTAPES, BUT HAS YET TO PRODUCE AN ALBUM THAT IS CLASSIC…MAYBE HE SHOULD STOP GOING HARD ON MIXTAPES AND SAVE SOME FOR AN ALBUM

  42. Bee [Eazy] Says:

    #35

it has everything to do with the song, if you know what “lice” is, is the lil shit that be in ya hair..im sure you know, and he is using “like” saying an example, it has something to do with the song if he using “like” to make ppl understand…duh

  43. Bee [Eazy] Says:

“a gun is not a math problem i wont even think, just leave you dead like the mink under my sink”

“my flow is like pasta take it and eat it, but imma need cheese if im making a Ziti, yall nigga want beef i wanna steak…”

Lil wanye spits the right stuff, yall trippin’

  44. Stick2daScript Says:

Check these Weezy tracks out from his first solo cd. Before the Gillie Squid allegations about writing lyrics for The Carter……The young boy been spittin’ that fire!

  51. Dabachelor18 Says:

  52. Im selling oranges papi Says:

I swear i love this song sooooooooooooo much! It bumps in car all day man…i sound like a weezy stan but you know what? i am.lol

  53. T2 Says:

    # 53 Cus I think they use each others name to type some homo shit about each other.

  54. Juicy Says:

wayne snapped, i really like this song!!! niggas love to hate, its a hobby i see. and why are these kids playin with that gay shit??? how unneccessary.

  55. jb Says:

this song is ok but wayne is overrated and he pushed his alum back so he wouldnt have to face G-unit shoot to kill dec 18th…

    GMC WE STAY GETTIN MONEY…

  56. alive & well Says:

#20 he didnlt say “why do rappers” twice. the 1st line was “wider rappers” in reference to EZ wider rolling papers

  57. skinny body Says:

first you a lame fo sayin that he pushed it back fo gunit. He wiil smash 50 garbage ass and the lame ass niggas in the group. Wayne on big and better things than to come back at some people who aint even hot no more. wayne got the crown and he is the best rapper alive.

p.s, soon to be the best rapper ever.

  58. real Says:

Lil wayne is a kid compaired to Jay, but Jay is all most d@@@ fifty and half the time either on purpose or not he slides in someone else’s verse. In order to label Jay as the G.O.A.T. or living you have to put like twenty other people up there since he vicked their verse. Wayne gotten better every year and to all the Jay fans, I like Jay stuff but serious he bites off other people. The G.O.A.T does not have anything to do with how many records you sold. If it was, then the G.O.A.T. would be MC Hammer(check Billboard if you dont believe me)

  59. meka Says:

hi u is me boo!! ok
