Lupe Fiasco Digs Himself A Hole
After screwing up his rhymes during a tribute to A Tribe Called Quest on VH1’s Hip Hop Honors awards show on Sunday, rap star Lupe Fiasco has quickly become a blogger’s whipping boy in a drama now referred to as “Fiascogate,” with new allegations from Q-Tip that Lupe was never asked by him to perform at the VH1 ceremony at all.
His voice rises. “It’s like, ‘Oh, you ain’t never listened to Midnight Marauders? You ain’t expanding your horizons? Oh, you ain’t real’ cause they did that shit to me! ‘Oh Lupe, that’s fucked up man, I don’t fuck with you now, I’m not buying your next album’ and be dead serious! It made me feel like, ‘You dirty bastards. Like how dare you.’”
This entire situation is overhyped, but Lupe is making it so much worse with his comments. I would of just said my bad, and give the CD a listen, or at least lie and say I would.

I think there is a bigger issue at hand. Hip Hop is the only music art form where newer artists do not truly respect, pay homage, and in some cases even know the pioneers of the art. This is not just only about “Midnight Maruaders”…do you think a rock-n-roll guitarist never heard Jimi Hendrick’s classic material..I doubt it!!!

Man I really don’t know about this. On one side he sounds totally disrespectful, but it is truly just his opinion and one that the hip-hop elitist don’t agree with.
I guess of all the rappers, ATCQ expected Lupe to be one to “praise them” because he has a style and sound similar to their own. For this same reason though, you would think they wouldn’t come at him like this and go about addressing it in a different manner.

we should start a leave lupe alone campaign. i’m big fan of old school hip hop but i’m pnly 20 years old. the only song i’ve ever heard from a tribe called quest is scenario. personally i have no interest in listening to thier album. because i only heard one of their songs does not mean that i don’t respect them. this shit is being blown out and it’s getting bigger than it is actually suppose to be. and you can’t fault lupe from speaking the truth. and you never know what VH1 told dude. VH1 might have said :lupe Q-tip asked you to perform for him at HHH. i had a lot of respect for lupe and Q-tip. i think this shit just needs to be swept under the fucking rug and leave it at that.

It seems like Lupe’s just being honest. What he’s saying might come off to some as being disrespectful, but he likes what he likes. Someone above mentioned that it might have something to do with him being from the Chi. I’m not really sure about that. I went to school with kids from the midwest, lot of em from the Chi, and most of them knew all about Tribe,even though that’s a pretty small amount, and by then they were on their last album. Either way, it’s an interesting point. The west coast was pretty much runnin’ mainstream back in ‘93
