Free Screenings Of The Documentary, “BLING: A Planet Rock”

Its a 90-minute documentary that takes a hard-hitting look at how the flashy world of commercial hip hop played a significant role in the 10-year civil war in Sierra Leone, West Africa. BLING follows three hip-hop celebrities: Raekwon (Wu Tang Klan), Paul Wall and Reggaetón king, Tego Calderon. They visit the capital of Freetown where they survey the devastated country, meet the hip hop community, as well as encounter refugees and former child soldiers first hand.

The people that attend get a free drink ticket, all the popcorn they can eat, free vitamin water, and a complementary gift bag after the show. Theres also going to be a Q/A with the director of the film: Raquel Cepeda.

This is a very old documentary, they just changed the name of it. For those who go to view it, its kind of funny to see Paul Wall get ran up on by the Africans in Freeport. They were extremely upset by VH1’s (particularly Paul Wall’s) presence there. Paul Wall says some real fucked up shit when he gets back on the Bus. Something along the lines of “They can be mad all they want, Tomorrow they’ll still be here and I’ll be on my way back to Houston” I lost the little respect I may have had for Paul Wall at the point; hopefully they don’t edit that portion out. Also Raekwon was damn there near tears b/c he didn’t want to get off the bus to see the amputees and then when he did, he had a towel hung over his head the whole time. Raekwon also did some fucked up shit by asking one of the tour guides who was a former child soldier a bunch of random questions about to what extent he participated in the War and whether he killed people and kids (I don’t think it was necessary to make the guy relive and feel bad about a War he had little choice about fighting in)

All in all it was a good documentary, I think VH-1 will go back and edit much of the original documentary b/c it made some of the “guests” look bad, especially Paul Wall for his comment. In the end you will come out with a heavy respect for Tego, for he is the only one who truly conducts himself as a man & who shows true respect and sincerity for everyone over there. Paul Wall and Raekwon look like idiots for much of the film, especially when Raekwon is showing the Africans how to pose in a B-boy/Jail stance while taking pictures.
