Top 5: Hip-Hop Breakups

RealTalkNY takes a look at Hip Hop’s biggest break ups. It seems all good things come to an end, and relationships are put the test when success is achieved. So this trend of course is prominent in the world of Hip Hop. Hopefully some of the people listed can come to a reconciliation and get back to making great music.
*Feel free to weigh-in with some notable breakups.
5.)
Jay-Z and Dame Dash: Death of a dynasty. Even after three years, I’m still in shock over this one.
RealTalkNY: Damn these two built a dynasty and made millions together. Who would of seen this coming, they was like Batman and Robin. But as time goes on egos collide and people change.
4.)
Pete Rock & CL Smooth: One of the first producer/emcee combo groups of its time. Creative differences in the studio ultimately contributed to the breakup.
RealTalkNY: They could of made some classic hits if they could of stayed together.
3.)
Fugees: The group failed to reform after the success of Lauryn’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. And now in 2007, it looks like the critically acclaimed group might never get back together.
RealTalkNY: Success tore this group apart. Lauryn Hill lost it after her debut album and the group never recovered. To this day they still can’t get it together.
2.)
NWA: Group turmoil and money mishandling at Ruthless Records led to the demise of the controversial group.
RealTalkNY: Too many egos in one group, it was just a matter of time until they hated each other.
1.)
A Tribe Called Quest: A Tribe Called Quest = Real Hip-Hop. After performing on this years VH1 Hip-Hop Honors, we’re left to wonder what would’ve been if these creative minds would have stayed together.

October 8th, 2007 at 7:36 pm
Only goes to prove that all things come to an end, in hip hop in particular. I mean, in other genres you see bands and groups sticking together thorugh their whole carriers. What makes it so hard for hip hop groups?
Feel you on this one, might’ve switched place with fugees and nwa, because of their wider audience. Nwa did do a whole lot for hip hop however..

October 8th, 2007 at 9:17 pm
number 6, cleezy you a motherfuckin lie hot boyz are wack. the only reason why you think they were hot was because there wasn’t any other rap group out that was rapping about money hoes and cars but them. but i bet you if they came out now, they wouldnt be shit compared to g-unit. seriously think about it…what was the hottest rapline or punchline any of them ever put out compared to g-unit? u actually think if hot boyz and g-unit drop albums at the same time hot boyz would outsell g-unit? if you do you crazier than i thought. i know g-unit talk about money hoes and cars and shit too but lyrically, g-unit would end the hot boyz career like he did ja rule.
October 8th, 2007 at 9:25 pm
cash money wasnt stoppin nuthin, record sells trump everything. and i hate g-unit incase u thought i was a fan. and cash money hasnt sold as many units and 50 to this day i bet. i dont really know. but cash money wasnt take over the game at all. sorry homey

Tribe Called Quest over NWA? ARE YOU SERIOUS. I am a Little bit one sided since I grew up listening to NWA. The Impact of this breakup is incredible. Just to mention a few things that spawned over this breakup.
The Chronic
Snoop Dogg
Dogg Pound
Death Certificate
Death Row
2pac
50 Cent
Eminem
Death of Both Pac and Big
G-unit
Ja Rules destruction
Just to mention a few things. Name me a breakup that has had a bigger impact on the game than this breakup.
October 8th, 2007 at 10:27 pm

October 8th, 2007 at 11:57 pm
Cosignin’ #31 PhatBat, Dungeon Family was about the most complete group/click as it gets! Goodie Mob are recordin’ their new album as we speak and LO is back wit them dudes(Hallelujah)!
And 4 dude (#29) who said that Cash Money didn’t take anything over must have been in hyperbaric chamber during 1999-2001. Them niggas made SO MANY HITS in such a short time span, you woulda thought they had their own radio station, WCMR!!
Niggas be killin me wit da outlandish comments. Carry On Bitches
October 9th, 2007 at 12:21 am
key words,
so many hits in such a short time span
to take over is to have a bunch of hits over a long time span.
and honestly i never knew a nigga wit a cash money album back then except for juve
October 9th, 2007 at 12:35 am
number 35, you must be out your mind to say that hot boyz had so many hits…wow 1999-2001 come to think of it…what the hell did they bring out in 2001? maybe they did take over for a good minute but like i said that was because wasnt no other serious rap group out at the time. let them try to come out now with that same shit they was bringing out then, it wouldnt work. even weezy changed up his style from what he was doing when he was with the hot boyz. and if they were to try to come out now there wouldn’t be any fuckin hits that they would bring out that would change the game. cause when i think of the hot boyz they remind me of all these new ATL rappers who put out song with no meaning what so ever.

White boy stay wherever the fuck you are from. You don’t know shit about hip hop. When did the Hot Boys come out? I see your whiteness through the internet.
Hot Boys album came out in 1996, Then Juvenile dropped and they came out with another in 1998.
STOOPID CRACKER!!!

October 9th, 2007 at 6:44 am
Bone Thug N Harmony isnt the same without Bizzy
October 9th, 2007 at 6:47 am
#41 Diplomats!? Shiidd! I remember that Diplomats was good when we had Cam’ron, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana, and Freeky Zeeky.
#38 I don’t think that the Black Eyed Peas broke up. They’re doin’ solo albums.
F-Unit is waayyy better off without that lying, no good for nothing The Game. G-Unit was THE Group, the hardest group when we had the general 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo and Young Buck. That’s it. I dunno. SP State Property- Beanie Sigel, Young Gunz, Peedi Crakk (now Peedi Peedi), Omillio Sparks, Freeway.
Big Tymers- Baby and Mannie Fresh. They had some hit club songs.
Bone, Thugs and Harmony without Bizzy Bone and Flesh-N-Bone
Now. IOf Real Talk NY do the Top 5: R&B Break Ups: I would put Jodeci and Xscape at top 2

@#32 you said you couldn’t understand why Tribe would be #1 over NWA. I see the examples you gave and well I’ll just say that the break-up of Tribe hurt the entire industry. With Tribe in the game, you had balance. You had a successful real hip-hop group helping to dictate what sounds good and what can sell(creativity). Just think how wide the window is between Tribe and Kanye or Lupe for that matter. While in the meantime we’ve always had that recycled gansta rap.(look at it this way, a person like Busta dumped the old and switched to the everybody lane). IF IT WASN’T FOR THE TRIBE BREAK-UP, WE WOULDN’T HAVE NEVER HAD TO ASK THE QUESTION IS HIP-HOP DEAD.
October 9th, 2007 at 7:56 am
It would make my day if g-unit broke up. Cash money is much better, without a doubt.
October 9th, 2007 at 8:04 am
i think that cash money should be on there…i mean those guys made good albums and provided a real sound that is help keeping the south relevant…
but yes i am still reeling at the death of a dynasty, roc-a-fella…that is a freakin shame!
and oh yeah when t-pain was tryin to sing last night at the hip hop honors i wanted to tear my ears off my head, it was just that bad…i had to turn it…lol

October 9th, 2007 at 9:34 am
Im kinda surprised dat aint nobody said Tupac nd Biggie..if they neva had beef they wud be makin classic hits but i guess ppl like diferent flavas u get me
October 9th, 2007 at 9:53 am
what the hell is going on,
why do people keep comparing the hot boys and g-unit
is there sumthin i’m missing,
they had nothing to do wit each other,
hot boys didnt hurt aftermath and shady records, so g-unit would’ve still been in the game
and i still hate g-unit by the way
and what great albums did cash money have are ya’ll 4real
i liked juve, he gets a pass.
nobody was buying b.g. chopper city,
nobody copped big tymers, yea they had fly ass videos wit cars and money and bitches and club songs, but they didnt have shit on smash. the had new orleans on smash maybe battling wit no limit. but no one cared when turk went to jail, when juve left, and came back, and left again, b.g. still irrelevant, mannie fresh leaving was a big deal, but thats it. if the hot boys break up hurt u then u need to get a grip, get a hold of your life homey
October 9th, 2007 at 9:55 am

@#57 Recycled Gangster Rap?. All eyez on me, The Chronic, Predator, Death Certificate, Get Rich or Die Trying, Marshall Mathers LP, Doggystyle, and so on and so on. Are all of these examples really recycled gangster raps. Hip Hop has its different lanes. You are talking about balance, in order for balance to exist there has to be diversity. You cant have balance by only having one type of music. NWA had its core fans and so did the Tribe Called Quest. This helped to widen the diversity in hip hop. You had groups like Public Enemy, De La Soul, Ice T, NWA. That were making huge impacts on the game. What is killing hip hop is not that the Tribe broke up, what is killing hip hop is the fact that todays media is really pushing music down your throat. There are some people that might be able to distinguish between genuienly liking an artis or group but the majority of people like a song. The song is played all day in BET, MTV,Movies, Radio ad so on. These artist are not developed and therefore you have poor album sales. People get accustomed to purchasing the song in itunes and buying the ringtone and that is it. The people do not care or have not gotten the chance to connect and relate with the artist. HIP HOP IS NOT DEAD. Like anything else it needs a revolution that has to start from the top. Peace.

Flava Flav and New York

plz ban numba 1 cuz tht 1st shii gettin really annoyin nowadays.
October 9th, 2007 at 12:51 pm
Ja Rule & Murder Inc ? opps …
2 pac & Dr.Dre ? I would go for The Game & G-Unit because the fallout from that was huge, 50 making money off The Game, 50 brought the rights to G-unot, game made disses non-stop in 2005 and appeared on countless Mixtapes just like Lil Wayne is doing this year and The game’s not really done anythink this year.
October 9th, 2007 at 1:08 pm
Murda Inc not the label but the Supergroup DMX, Ja Rule, and Jay-z cuz dat was the shit even though they broke up b4 an album

Chad Hugo + Pharrell Williams
The Neptunes. They may not be hip-hop to some of you, but I think they have influenced it. Lately, Pharrell has been producing by himself taking production credits and Chad has been doing his own work, but what happend to them working together? They made some crazy ass beats back in the day. Now, Pharrell by himslef…sounds like trash. They better get there act together man and make some of that crack.
October 9th, 2007 at 5:26 pm

Let’s be serious cash money was hot for a minute, But there break-up ain’t change shit in hip-hop. The Wu-tang, NWA, Tribe, The Firm, Capone-n-Noreaga, pete rock & CL Smooth, Jay-Z and Dame. These splits were major.
October 9th, 2007 at 6:19 pm
50 cent and the top of the billboard charts lol
October 10th, 2007 at 5:00 pm
LOL! Hot Boys and G-Unit? Tht’s blasphamey. How about Redman and Method Man? They made some hits since “How High”. Mos Def and Talib Kweli are Black Stars, Talib Kweli and DJ Hi-Tek-Reflection Eternal. They got some underground songs like “1, 2, 3, “Move Somethin”, Double Barrell (Kweli). Or Def Squad w/ Redman, Keith Murry and Erick Sermon, EPMD-Erick Sermon and Parish Smith-every albums they did before and after break up was about all kinds of business like Business As Usall, Unfinish Business, Last Business
October 11th, 2007 at 10:06 am
