I am extremely disappointed in KRS1. I thought he had sense until now. If anything, it is the 50 cents of this world that are ruining hip-hop, by destroying any unity that we had within ourselves as black people. If the east coast united, hip-hop would sound better and in a way, be more competitive than now. What we have nowadays is bad competition in hip-hop.

Genres do come and go, maybe hip-hop is the new jazz-highly influential but more or less dead as a popular art form. What we have now in the charts (even 50 cent) is not hip-hop. I respect Krs for being the legend he is and agree with some of what he is saying except when he says Kanye isn’t hip hop. When you really listen to what he said he contradicts himself. At first he says Kanye is innovative then turns around and says Hip hop is innovative. Now forgive me if i’m wrong but would that not make Kanye hip hop? They share commonalities. If you look at it every rapper has their run Jay-z had his with Roc-a-fella, Puffy had Bad Boy, everyone wants to be the man the top dog and everyone has their style and elements that add to hip hop. Everyone says hip hop is dead but aren’t really looking. Not too long ago there was Ja Rule, DMX, Sisquo, Jay-Z, Lil Kim, Da Brat, JD, Puff and Ma$e, No Limit, Missy and Timbaland, Cash Money and the Hot Boys…the list goes on people used to hear No Limit and think it was the worst crap in the world but to the next person that is what hip hop was to him. That doesn’t mean that they discredit the “gods” of rap it just meant it spoke to them, told a story or made them dance. Some where techno sounding just like Whodini. “The Freaks Come Out at Night” and “Friends” sound techo-ish but its still hip hop just a different element. Just like Slick Rick had the dookie chain colorful clothes and shades. Slick Rick is a crazy ass story teller and dressed fly. Just because a person may want to shake their ass and crank that doesn’t mean they don’t mess with Krs or Rakim everyone adds a piece to the puzzle. Kanye and 50 are the same. I will tell you right now I don’t like 50. I’ve never bought any of his albums, with exception to Bed for Mercy (Buck and Banks did it for me). I don’t like 50’s sportsmanship in the industry and I personally wished he would go away……. far away. But that doesn’t mean he’s not hip hop. He’s a different aspect the gritty aspect but he hasn’t evolved. As consumers we demand more and expect our favorite rappers to continue putting out the hits. So it’s a bit disappointing when someone like 50 who moved so many with his first album doesn’t come with something fresh only copies of what hes already made. Hip hop always told a story and moved the masses but it always had a different story. Kayne came in with “Through the Wire” and did his “Lil Wayne” thing. Kanye was on everyones track from “Slow Jams” with Twista and Jamie Fox to even that Brandy track. He may not be the most lyrical at times but you sang along, it told a story to inspire or move you or sometimes just make you laugh (she gotta light skin friend look like Michael Jackson/ Gotta dark skin friend/ Look like Michael Jackson). And you have 50 who inspires you to stay on your grind (I guess I don’t know) but he moves his fans. However 50 has moved away from what he used to be not everyone wants to hear how stankin’ rich he is or how he’ll still kill. That doesn’t relate to the masses at all not everyone wants to shoot people, or sell water they want more and not more as in the same story line just over a “shake ya ass” or “track for the girls” beat. Not saying thats a bad thing but go outside the box. Do a “Stronger” or just like Jay a “99 Problems” or a LL Cool J ” I Need Love” or “Mama Said Knock You Out”. Explore or do something totally out there like wear clothes that fit or wear white blinder glasses. Didn’t 50 bring us the G-unit bra wife beater? Didn’t a lot of people think that was gay or not hip hop? I think their both hip hop just different elements and no one takes away from another sometimes the other has the spotlight for the moment. Kanye never said 50 wasn’t hip hop he said he’s number 1 right now and he is. Shit Nelly was number one and wrote a song about being number one lol. Krs needs to let hip hop be as he called it innovative and take no ones side. It’s all hip hop!!!!

I really liked Kanye’s album, but 50’s album was really dope. I listen to Kanye when I need background music because the production is crazy, but 50’s album really impressed me. The crazy thing is….Kanye has told you that he isn’t hip hop and that he is pop. I listened to him say several times when he said Justin timberlake was his competition. But you guys still keep putting me in that category of hip hop.

50 is a really creative artist and has mastered the act of writing a song, but people just don’t appreciate it anymore.

Unfortunely blacks are doing the same thing we always do…fight like crabs in a bucket and tearing our own down while they are climbing to the top. This is nothing new!

People just don’t realize how many doors….Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Puff have opened up for you guys. Go take advantage of it instead of critiquing their success.

This is the problem. Ok KRS is entitled to his opinion. Hip-Hop as everyone says was started in the streets for the streets to have a voice and whatnot. But as stated hiphop is supposed to be innovative instead of repeating itself. And with that I say Kanye is definitely bringing hip hop to a new era. All three of his albums brought a new and innovative perspective for a hip hop fan. Kanye has shown waaayyyy more growth than any artist since he’s been out. Name one artist in recent years that can say that they have actually given something different with each album. So Kanye is in a way the definition of hiphop. He has a lot of heart and love for the music itself. He doesn’t care about sales, he just wants to be heard.

I feel what hes saying about 50 vs. Kanye. Kanye is trying to appeal to the general audience who listens to anything as long as it sounds good, aka the crossover crowd. One can say he flipped his shit and went innovative with hip hop, but people like me and KRS1 start to think about the borderline that you arent supposed to cross when it comes to that shit. Its great to bring new things to the table, but if you want to be considered hip hop you have to stick to drums hats and rhyme patterns and keep the hip hop vibe in your music always at least 60%, never anyless because once you drop your hip hop vibe below the 50% mark…what are you? just another person trying to make money generating from all types of audiences. KRS-One might not be what he use to but he is still and always will be a powerful person that is a part of the hip hop community. Kanye West and 50 Cent fell off. Kanye is still a good producer of course but as far as rapping he should fall back. When 50 Cent first came out so long ago his music was real and could not be denied as being the truth. Now his commcial style of music isn’t doing anything positive for the hip hop community. Now I am not hating on anyone. Lets be realistic if you wanna hear about people getting killed in most every song than listen to curtis. Im not saying the album isnt good but im 25 yrs old and I dont wanna hear that on the whole album.
