Fix the problem?

The problem is BET. The BET network needs to go off-air along with MTV. Then maybe the problem would be fixed. Then maybe people wouldn’t stop finding fault with the content on these channels and then move onto how movies and tv sitcomes and video games can also portray negative images that affect our youth. NOTHING in entertainment is 100% positive period.

I understand what Bomani was trying to do and I understand the video’s satirical effect but his efforts were clearly counterproductive because now the video is looked in the same light as other provacative hip hop videos but even worse. The ‘aye bay bay’ video is no where near as worse as the ‘read a book’ video and the message of bomani’s video was defeated.

I watched the entire segment last night. The “moderator” did a horrible job at trying to comprehend the message of the video. Putting that video on during 106 is nothing different than putting any other recent down south video on BET. CNN, as well as most every other news channel, needs to chill with the host being abrasive and cutting people off. It’s not productive.

#5) The A Bay Bay probably isn’t the best video to compare to in regards of videos damaging our community, the children. But BET and MTV are not the problem, just like the videos and music are not the problem. The problem is actual reality, not what you see on TV or hear on the radio. It’s the parent’s not parenting their children, poverty stricken communities not having better school systems so that the children can bring their families out of poverty. Those are the problems that need to be fixed. those problems are more of a priority than entertainment

Street smarts are great, I think it helps with common sense issues and life issues in general. Books smarts are great too, but having both is even better. It’s almost like being able to conquer two different worlds. I just think reading broadens our imaginations and reminds us that we are not the only people in this world. This song was not created to justify shit about no 50 cent… Therefore, who ever said this is a clown. This song was not to bring blacks down. Go to Bomani’s website, read his words, listen to his other songs….
Gather your own opinion. The same people who are arguing it are those who cannot think for themselves.
It is kind of like religion. Allot of yawl are (insert religion here) because yawl grew up that way. Your parents were (insert religion here) so that is all you knew. You did not find “God,” God found you.
Same thing with this song, though on a smaller scale and far less controversial issue… Allot of people are criticizing the song because they do not understand it.
White folks do not get it because A) they cannot appreciate the satire and B) it does not relate to them.
Older black folks don’t get it because A) They are not hip anymore to what is really being played on these stations and even further removed from how teenagers really think, and B) Because in a way they don’t want to open their minds to objective thinking. Because 20 years ago this song WOULD have been more offensive.
When was the last time you seen a JET or EBONY on someone’s living room table? These publications no longer serve the voice of the black public. Politicians are getting younger, artists are getting younger, and hell even criminals are getting younger. So how do you reach a society that does not understand your views and or beliefs? You have to find a common language, and that what he did.
Therefore, to hear these “older” voices of the black community bring the song down is disappointing, but not shocking.
You have to take the song in context, in time, and for what it was.
The song essentially serves three purposes….
1) It uses a medium that is easily recognizable by the urban youths (which was the targeted audience)
2) It uses a language that makes the song satirical aspect even cleverer… (Like Lauren Hill said…”add a mother fucker so ignant niggas hear me”)
And lastly,
3) He is a father of twins. He is a husband. He is a mentor to underprivileged kids in DC… In addition, without this song stirring up this much controversy, he might not have been on BET, CNN, Jesse Jackson’s Radio Show or 106 and Park (which he will be on Tues. Sept.4.)
Sometimes, a kick to the face sends a far quicker message than a fist. (Feel me?) Or in Bomani’s words “YOU can give them a finger, but together WE can give them a fist”

This is in response to “2 guns up”. First reading is fundamental. Did you know that 400 years ago slaves were not allowed to read? In fact if you were a slave who could read, you had to hide it, because if it was ever found that you could; you would be killed! People like Frederick Douglass(I wonder if you know who he is) who was a slave and In 1836, Douglass first attempted to escape from his owner, Covey. He was unsuccessful. I wont tell you about him in hopes that you will READ up on him. As a black man I find it very important to pick up a book for the very reason I started this blog with. Reading is for the old and mature. But not in the context of age, in the mind. If you dont read how is one to be informed of his surrounds? That is somthing to ponder on.

P.S. I am 24 years old, and I read about a book a week. And I am from Oakland, Ca. So does reading(by your standards)make me “Old and corny”? I think not. Pick up a book you may learn something. Who knows?
