NY Times Article: Will Success Spoil Kanye West?
Here’s a concept: starcissism, a pop star’s mixture of self-love, self-promotion, self-absorption and self-awareness. It’s the core of Kanye West’s third album, “Graduation” (Roc-A-Fella), due for release on Tuesday, and yes, he has earned it. But it’s also a letdown.
Every rapper needs a strong ego, and Mr. West deserves his. But where he used to identify with everyday dreamers and strivers, now he seems happy to stay in his V.I.P. zone: all dressed up and behind that velvet rope.

i dont get the whole competition when both album are going to sell the same amount just like there other album. the only difference is that 50 will sell more. so there shouldn’t be no hard feeling cause that what 50 album has been doing is outselling every one. so why would there be a competition it stupid. but to go against 50 are you crazy were not talkin about t.i., or akon, or young jeezy, but 50.

U know it’s really sad cause we have this thing in the black community where we can’t stand 2 see another black person come up. It’s ok if we praise or degrade them but if they praise themselves then they are spoiled or conceited & if they show signs of self depredation then they’re labeled a sellout I think the writer should’ve focused more on Kanye’s music & less on his personality cause 50 has a narcissistic personality himself (He feels the only music that should sell is G-unit) Hell Mick Jagger is a Asshole! u kno i think album sales count 4 a lot but then i look at certain rappers who sell a lot of albums, singles, ringtones what have u and most of those guys arent better then other rappers who dont sell half as much.
nas doesnt sell as many records as he should but theres no other rapper that is better on even on his level besides like hov.
50 has sold a lot of records before downloading became crazy but to say he’s better a RAPPER then jay, nas, eminem weezy, or even kanye is pretty laughable. granted he sells a lot more overseas cuz he had that eminem connection, they dont have another great rapper to compare 50 to. why do u think 50 has to try that much harder in the US to get ppl’s attention that he has an album coming out w/ 5 singles when it used to take just one? we have great rappers over here, so if ur not on par ur not gonna catch our attention no matter how ‘famous’ u are.

I think the critic is saying yeah each rapper has a swag and in one way or another says or thinks he is the shit, the best. They enjoy thier VIP lifestyle and they should. But the problem is when you get to a level where you can no longer relate to everyday people. I mean everyday people are spending the hard earned money. From the CD this critic feels Kanye is getting to far removed from reality he is closed off behind the “velvet rope”. I have never liked Kanye’s personality I personally do not care for a man who would look in the mirror more than me and that is not to say that he is gay it is to say yes he is feeling himself to much. Yet and still he weaves enough lyrical content into superb production to keep me listening.
I haven’t been feeling 50 since get rich or die trying. exactly #45 how is he going to bash someone for doing something then turn around and do it but call it creativity!I have no plans to purchase or download 50 not because of the whole choose sides “battle” but because to me it is whack that everytime you come out it has to be on some battle/beef stuff.
