Kanye Reportedly Sells 930k In His First Week
I’m still waiting for the official Billboard numbers, but HitsDailyDouble is saying Kanye sold 930k+, while 50 Cent sold 660k. There numbers are usually off but no by a crazy amount. So I guess it is safe to say Kanye won by a landslide.
Who expected this big gap between sales?
What does this mean for the future of rap?

I expected Kanye to squeak by, only because it felt like it was the “little guy” (Kanye) versus the “bully” (fifty), and all the internet blog readers, real “hip hop” fans had enough of fifty’s antics (contreversy right before his album to create hype), so they went out to make sure Kanye won, to shut fifty up (which won’t happen). On top of that, Kanye’s album (in my opinion) was better. I believe Fifty could have put some better material out, but then again, i believe he was setting the scene for when he drops “before I self destruct”.

As for numbers, funny shit is, it was 50 who called Kanye out. And there will always be a large 2nd week drop because the niggas who were hell bent on getting the albums, got them the first week. 2nd week sales are usually from folks who didn’t want to be part of the hype and got wind from their peers that the album’s dope. And because Graduation is dope, it’ll remain on Top 20, 10 maybe.

It was a great marketing ploy by both 50 and Kanye because people actually went out and bought the albums instead of just downloading them. Overall it was a great thing for rap music. Even if Def Jam brought records Kanye still would of have beat him you only have to look at internet sites that do polls and you will see that kanye was always killing 50. (Some had over 70% in Kanyes favour).
The main thing for 50 to think about is why has his album sales dropped and how come his own fans have not supported him more the answer is bcus his album wasn’t that great! (I ain’t hating I liked the album but it’s not a classic).

I never thought it was a great idea in the first place. You seriously have people putting 50 against Kanye and Kanye against 50. They are so different and I listen to them both for a different vibe. I think they should have switched the release dates but I guess I’m just a neutral bitch. It really helped push Kanye to another level though. I think the numbers are inflated. Think about it, 50 already had been expressing the fact that he may not make more records prior to the whole 50 vs Kanye thing. Universal Music is in the background of both Interscope and Def Jam. They definitely want to have a hip hop artist that does 50 type numbers. Don’t you think they would want to sway the vote to try to ensure they have someone to step in 50’s spot if he did decide to back down? And if he didn’t decide to back down then they’d just have two artist that do over the top sales. I mean it just makes good business sense and if I were Def Jam/universal/Interscope I sure as hell would do it. And I’m no stan (or whatever yall call it). Copped both Curtis and Graduation.

@ 120 I don’t doubt that this is not a common practice in the industry at all. I mean it kind of makes good business sense to do it. I saw the quote that Def Jam I think issued saying… how it was nearly impossible to falsify the soundscan statics yada yada b/c of security measures… that’s bull anything thats computerized has hole that’s the reason ppl like me have network security contracts and #2 if it wasn’t being done in the first place there would be no need for such measures. So I don’t doubt it all across the board. Anyhow I still just think the Kanye vs 50, 50 vs Kanye thing is dumb. I just don’t see how you compare the two of them. Universal/Def Jam/Interscope played the public well on this one.

People on here making excuses for 50 fugged up album. I bought them both because one of my sons wanted 50 cent and I owed him money LOL. Kanye, on the other hand still tore his ass in the Us charts. however, his album is number 1 in two countries, and in the top ten in 5 countries, and he also has fewer positions in the charts than 50 cent. this is for all those who think 50 lost, he clearly dint. its bin a great week for hip hop and i fink we shud all be happy for both artists.
