I take no joy in saying this, however, this song, as a whole is a little unimpressive. I can appreciate the minimalist approach with the beat (Kind of a “less is more” arrangement), but The Neptunes have been really underwhelming lately. Lyrically, son still has it, although I’ve never thought that he lost it anyway. Don’t be fooled by the “remixes” that he appears on … that’s light work for a nigga who doesn’t have the chip on his shoulder of having to prove himself everytime that he appears on somebody else’s records.
In any event, back to this song … it sounds like a great re-introduction to his narcissistic narrative side where he details the game for those who relate as well as for those of you who never whipped coke with bake, let it dry and chopped it down on your mother’s dinner plates … lol. It sounds like a great freestyle and/or leak record, but not an official first single at all yall.

What some of y’all fail to realise is that this is a “concept” album, meaning that it is supposed to go with the plot and flow of the movie. It is suppose to enhance the movie not take away from it, and that’s why Pharrell made that type of beat, and why Jay’s flow was so laid back. When you reach the climax of the movie, that is probably where you’ll hear the grittiest song.

Anyway, make no mistake, while I’m not completely blown away by this song, I do like the effort and where I see Jay-Z taking it.
If you follow the pattern, Jay-Z is due for a classic … Reasonable Doubt (Classic), In My Lifetime (A few career defining songs like “Streets Is Watching” and “Cough Up A Lung”, but still not a classic), Hard Knock Life (His break-out album), In My Lifetime Vol. 3 (Directionless and lacking a common purpose … still he manages to drop some gems as always), etc., etc. … you can name and rate the rest. Kingdom Come was all over the place musically and went waaaaaaaaaaaaaay over most peoples heads, but what do you expect? He’s grown and seen more than most people will ever see and/or experience in their life. American Gangster is Jay-Z’s Total Recall … flashbacks from a crack past spat on tracks and bound to go plat! Top that! Hopefully the recent success of artists such as T.I., Common and most recently Kanye and 50 will make record labels respond to the trend of the market embracing substantive Hip Hop music once again. Yall need to fukk with a nigga like me! LOL. It has become obvious that a smash club single will NOT do it all by itself. Just ask Mims, Swizz Beats and Hurricaine Chris. It’s about star power and talent. It is what is.

I was also born in 1969 and i was also around to see this music evolve from the BEGINNING! We left in the hands of the new generations and what happened, most of the fans are claiming that hip hop is dead. Maybe it will take a THIRTY EIGHT year old man to bring this back to life. If you really love hip hop give it mouth to mouth literally and stop trying to lessen people’s skills due to the age of the mc. In the beginning all of the rappers were older than us. We were 15/16 years old. The first YOUNG rapper was LL who hit the scene when he was fifteen. We need to get back to the origins in order to save my baby : HIP HOP!
