I’m starting to think that you people don’t understand what conceptual album means. Well since I’m convinced that you don’t understand let me explain.

It means the music will be based on “scenes or concepts related to the movie American Gangster”.

For example…the song “Blue Magic” is a scene from the movie when Frank Lucas is trying to brand his dope as Blue Magic.

Get it?

So, if you look at it from that point of view. Jay-Z is setting another precedent in the music industry. This is what normally happens. It seems stupid when he is doing it AND nobody understands (like Kingdom Come)then after it makes $25M to $50M he gets richer and everybody follows the lead.

I honestly believe he is at a point in his career that he doesn’t care what people think. He is going to put out the music and sell 1.6 with only 2 weeks worth promotion and NO US tour. lol. Do you know how hard it is the sell 1.6 w/o a US tour?? He has ESPN, HP, Budweiser, Verizon and now Universal Studios putting up the budgets for the albums….that’s crazy.

Think about it for 2 secs. Every year you go to the studio for 2 weeks make 15 songs release it and sell 1.6 + the $1M check from Def Jam just to come to the office. That’s the American Dream. Not going in the studio trying to make songs that you force out to sell records.

I just don’t understand why people are being critical of him because he is growing with his music. The music is not going to sound like Reasonable Doubt or Blueprint because its 2007 and his CORE audience is older and probably has kids and a family by now.

It has to be difficult sometimes for him being the only MC out of the top 3 (Pac, Big, Jay) that made it past age 30. I was watching that B.I.G movie the other day and I was wondering what BIG would be like at 36 years old. Would he still be doing verses? Or would Pac still be rapper? Probably. But since Jay is the only one to make it past 30 it seems weird. I would bet that Pac and BIG would still be putting out music right now though. Think about it?

Ten years from now we will look back and see the he paved the way and set the precedent for all these rappers to have a CAREER in hip hop and not just be a good rapper.

Not 2 get 2 far off subject, BUT the phrase “ya smell me” came from E-40/the bay (Cali). Everybody likes 2 knock 40 water 4 his irregular style, but dude created 3/4ths of the phrases niggas use everyday. And this is comin’ from a Atlanta nigga!

Anywayz, I like concept albums, but there kinda hard 2 pull off (ask Dr. Dre about tryin 2 have Denzel narrarate the Detox album: didn’t work). This nigga is actually pausing moments of the movie and making songs off that inspire him about the frame. Might not sound like much, but THIS IS DIFFICULT PEOPLE.

And about him being 40, so the phuck what?!??! There’s plenty of dope bosses WAAAAAAYY older than him still pushin heavily all around the world. He’s lived the life so he’s entitled 2 talk about it howevea he pleases.

@39….No I’m not in my 40’s but so what if i was…..And it is well known they went to school together……That can be proven……….And about him and LL being the same age…..they are around the same age….LL came out when he was like 15 yrs old and he is in his late 30’s now just like Jay is…….50’s point was it is perceived because he’s been out for so long that LL is older than Jay but they are like the same age. LL blew up in the mid 80’s as a teenager and Jayz 10 yrs later when he was already about 26….

i agree with #55 and i am from bk and older than 25.he is not over anyones head when it comes to lyrics or concepts or anything for that matter NAS is by far more articulate and a great storyteller by far that makes you actually think about what hes saying.it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand jay he has always been mediocre in his songs he sold based off his hooks and tracks point blank nothing he has said is making people actually read books or learn something other than the street life which anyone and everyone learns at one point if they grew up in an urban environment.hop off this camels humps BIG will always be king of NY and BROOKlYN…..
