Classic Albums Series Presents The Making of Jay-Z’s “Reasonable Doubt”

The Origins Of Hip-Hop’s Biggest Mogul - October 30 DVD Release

2 questions:
Is Reasonable Doubt a classic?
Is it Jay-z best album?

New York-Entrepreneur. Innovator. Businessman. Hip Hop Royalty. But first, Jay-Z was a hustler from the streets of New York City, with hard learned life lessons that he wanted the world to hear. Thus, Reasonable Doubt was born. On October 30 Eagle Rock Entertainment will release the next installment of its Classic Album series, taking a dive into Jay-Z’s historic 1996 debut.

Featuring commentary by Mary J. Blige, Kanye West, Irv Gotti and Foxy Brown, Classic Albums: Reasonable Doubt is an in-depth look at the making of Jigga’s first album. Priced at $14.98, is a look at the creation of these legendary tracks, the man behind them and their culture, interviews with Kanye West, Mary J. Blige , Foxy Brown and Irv Gotti, along with classic footage of Hova performing with the Notorious B-I-G .

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Jay-Z was a storyteller from the streets, bringing the accounts of hustle and hard-knock life to the masses. His intricate and ornate tracks, coupled with his smooth, conversational delivery made him an artist like no other. The use of jazz, gospel and soul in his sampling gives his music an intense urban sophistication, iced with creative lyrics that made Jay-Z the Shakespearean MC. Reasonable Doubt is the root of a signature sound that rappers continue to mimic.

Def Jam president, Roc-a-Fella Records founder, music/business/style icon, Jay-Z shows no signs of slowing down. Before The Blueprint , before The Black Album , bouncing back from retirement, there was Reasonable Doubt - the sound of a man not afraid to turn his struggles into art. This is the embodiment of hip-hop - raw, restless and real.

That was good writing whoever wrote the synopsis. Lol makes me wanna buy the dvd. RD was a classic but nobody labeled it that until well after its release. Me personally I was feelin blueprint more than any album.

chosen2bfly wrote on September 27th, 2007 at 1:39 pm

lol was that a serious question?? I doubt it! of course it’s a damn classic! even if you don’t like the person for whateva reason u gotta admit that this album has got everything that makes a classic. see I hate 1 cent with a passion but I must admit that GRODT had pretty damn good club bangers.
Anways, I couldn’t decide wether Reasonable Doubt or The Blueprint is better I like em both.

is this album a classic? is that even a serious question. the only albums on par with reasonable doubt are illmatic and ready 2 die.

the blueprint was a great album but reasonable doubt was THE album. by far hov’s best work.

like nas said, “they look at me and they say make another illmatic, they say the same bout jay and if biggie were still around im sure he would’ve gotten that same flack. they dont seem to realize that those are damn near ‘perfect’ albums. to top that kind of an album is damn near impossible.”

Reasonable doubt is a classic. Jay has had an incredible rap career that is why I think he is the G.O.A.T. Blueprint is close and IMO so is The Black album.

His other albums ain’t bad either but them above albums are in a league of there own.

BTW I am gonna get this dvd I think this dvd will be dope. Fade To Black was dope aswell it felt like I was at Madison Square garden when I watched it.

K 2 The Yee wrote on September 27th, 2007 at 3:13 pm

Of course its a classic. And yeah, i think its one of his bests next to the Black Album. The Black Album is flawless, like Makaveli or Illmatic. Don’t get me wrong I love the Reasonable Doubt, I can just relate to the Black ALbum more. But I definetely understand how others would say Reasonable Doubt is better. Both Great albums.

I THINK PEOPLE SAYING THAT JAY’Z'S BEST ALBUM WAS REASONALBE DOUBT IS JUST A CLICHE THING TO SAY…HIS BEST ALBUM IS ACTUALLY THE BLACK ALBUM BECAUSE ITS SO REAL…

FOR EXAMPLE

I GAURANTEE THAT ALL THE PEOPLE THAT SAY HIS FIRST ALBUM WAS HIS BEST LISTEN TO HIS MORE RECENT SONGS MORE THAN THEY LISTEN TO THE FIRST ALBUM…OR PROBABLY DONT EVEN LISTEN TO THE FIRST ALBUM AT ALL ANYMORE

AND BY NO MEANS AM I SAYING IT WAS WACK…BECAUSE REASONABLE DOUBT WAS DEFF. A CLASSIC…BUT…ITS NOT HIS BEST!!!!

I don kno man ..but dis dude is jus way too overated.. n i heard reasonable doubt n blueprint so i don wanna hear that bullshit.. they were good albums .. but i dont see nobody bumpin that shyt now so they cant be classics

RL wrote on September 29th, 2007 at 4:39 am

The only thing that keeps “Reasonable” from being a “classic”, in my opinion, is that it’s not original. The mafioso theme had been recycled so many times by other rappers that it almost became a common theme for East Coast gangster rap. Remember “Cuban Linx” that was released in 1995? That album was saturated with Mob ambitions. Anyway, Reasonable had top notch production and def lyrics which makes it one of the best albums of the 1990’s.
