Arguably the single biggest name in hip-hop today, Curtis Jackson, better known as 50 Cent, has had to deal with immense, and at times, unparallel pressures since, or perhaps even before the release of his diamond-selling debut Get Rich or Die Tryin’. But 50 hasn’t always met high expectations with his best, at times resulting in sub-par material that has fueled the notion that he is simply just one of many one great album artists. And more recently, 50 has been racking his brain attempting to put a turn on an album marketing plan that has at several times has gone very astray, seemingly trying to find something that connects with his fans. After all, 50’s amazing success has been dependant on his ability to market music that is met positively by his core audience, and for two solo albums, and many other projects stamped with the 50 Cent mark of approval, Curtis Jackson has displayed the uncanny ability to create interest, by any means necessary. With the stakes extremely high for 50 this time around, Jackson returns with a step in the right direction with the simply-titled Curtis.
The third LP from 50 begins with an engaging, mafia-film type dialogue between two nameless characters which sets the grimy mood perfectly for the album’s first two songs, “My Gun” and “Man Down”. Evident from the track-names, the opening cuts are a return to Get Rich-form for 50, as Curtis utilizes the aggressive flow, confidence, and Dr. Dre (sounding) production that won him a massive following over four years ago. The Akon collaboration, “I’ll Still Kill,” turns out to be the standout that 50 promised, as he meshes blunt street rhymes (”Respect comes from admiration and fear, you can admire me if you can catch one in ‘ya wig”) with a mean Akon hook and a light-thumping DJ Khalil production. The club-smash “I Get Money” fits in to the album better than expected, and however lazy and obvious in essence, the Justin Timberlake collabo “Ayo Technology” entertains, backed by a FutureSex/LoveSounds-sounding production, courtesy of Timbaland.
Even with the schmaltzy Robin Thick duet “Follow My Lead,” the first half of Curtis is undeniably where the best material lies, as the album takes a turn for the worse following the mediocre, yet catchy “Movin’ on Up”. Then comes the string of dated, failed singles that really put a damper on an otherwise solid project- “Straight to the Bank” should have landed straight in the trash, “Amusement Park” feels like “Candy Shop” part two (which itself was a recycled song), and “Fully Loaded Clip” is a perfect example of boring, laughable, faux-gangsta music. Unfortunately for 50, things don’t get much better with the arrival of Eminem and Dr. Dre; Em provides yet another weak guest spot on “Peep Show” and Dr. Dre gets credited for the abysmal “Fire” (who invited Young Buck and Nicole from the Pussycat Dolls?), a misguided attempt at another synth-heavy club hit.
To his credit, Curtis remains true to his word yet again, as the Mary J Blige-assisted “All of Me” is another highlight, the light, swinging Jake One beat complimenting the soulful Blige vocals and the smooth flow of 50, but even that is not enough to overcome the disappointment of the much-hyped “Curtis 187,” simplistic both beat-wise and lyrically, “And those were the days, where grime really paid, the 9 milli’ sprayed, got the f*** out the way”.
Although 50 Cent isn’t able to hold down the entire album at a high level of quality, the good moments are certainly there, and Curtis, however imperfect, is a good sign for devoted 50 Cent fans. The light switch clearly flicked on somewhere during the recording process, and the effort needed to make great records seems to be back in stretches on 50’s latest album. A step up from the sophomore release, The Massacre, 50 Cent has done a solid job of getting back on track, but only time will tell whether the focus came back in time or not.

Thanks…Album is better than i expected, definately better than ‘Massacre’, unfortunately cos 50 likes to run his mouth it wont get it just desrves. Also they’re a lot of haters and dick riders that take sides instead of listening to the music. Yes, its 50 back on the same shit BUT how many artists stick to what they know and dont get criticised for it like Kanye, DMX, Talib, Common etc etc.
Album is good especially the 1st half, 2nd half slips, so it goes from hot to luke warm but it still is a good album.
LISTEN to the album instead of sucking 50’s dick or shittin on him.
I will BUY both Graduation and Curtis (and any other good album out there) cos they bith cater to different moods and both are well produced.

I have the clean version on my I-pod and Sep11 couldn’t come any faster. ‘Man Down’, ‘Still Will Kill’ and ‘I Get Money’ are stand-out tracks. I also put Kanye’s album on my I-pod but minus ‘Big Brother and ‘Glory’. Too few tracks for this to be any type of classic album. In the end Kanye lacks quantity and fifty lacks that lil bit of quality.
